Prepare to feel the Wrath of a Magical Girl
While searching for a brave candidate to become a magical girl and defend the world from evil, a mythical creature finds Kayo Majiba, a cute young lady who seems like the perfect fit. But when this newly turned magical girl proves to be a crude delinquent who goes berserk in a conflict, it becomes clear that this may have been a terrible mistake. Now evil—and any innocent bystanders—will face the rage of a magical girl gone wrong!

Machimaho: I Messed Up and Made the Wrong Person Into a Magical Girl! (Machigatta Ko wo Mahou Shoujo ni shite shimatta) is an action-comedy manga by Souryuu, which began serialization in Kurage Bunch in 2016. Seven Seas Entertainment has licensed the series for print and digital release in English.

General Tropes:

  • A-Cup Angst: Kayo has a modest chest, so she gets really annoyed when she meets Nako.
  • Barbie Doll Anatomy: When taking humanoid form, both Meow and Miya's don't have genitalia and Mya's hair covers her breasts.
  • Beautiful All Along: Masanido looks like a thug with his pompadour wig, but without it he's a Bishōnen.
    • Nako literally doesn't recognize him and actually starts to fall in love with him before she realizes.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: Kayo is actually pretty smart, but hates studying and only gets good grades so the teachers don't bother her.
  • Butch Lesbian: Moemi is a stereotypical Japanese Delinquent Girl who Rivaled with Kayo but had a big crush on Tomoe.
  • The Cameo: The male and female leads of Crap! I Messed Up by Working at a Black Gal School! show up as actors in one of the movies Kayo watches.
  • The Chew Toy: Myu is constantly injured by Kayo, ignored by his co-workers and given no respect at all. He literally cries whenever he's actually seen as useful.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Nako and Mon maybe colored black, but Nako truly wants to be a hero and Mon grows more moral in time.
  • Delinquent Hair: Masanido almost always wears a pompadour wig.
  • Doom Magnet: Kayo's negative aura attracts Atasunmo like flies to a corpse. Luckily Kayo enjoys killing them in a single blow.
  • Expy: Nako seem to be a much nicer and friendlier version of Satsuki Kiryuin if she was raised by completely normal and much more loving parents.
  • Fanservice: There are constant Panty Shots, girls in revealing outfits and the occasional Mr. Fanservice.
  • Foil: Kayo and Nako are practically opposites from each other. Kayo is blonde, arranges her hair on ringlets, is modestly endowed and has a very short fuse. Nako is black-haired, wears her hair loose, has a huge chest and rarely answers with curses unless she's angry enough. Kayo never had any interest in being a hero and only starts to enjoy being a magical girl after realizing she can beat monsters to a pulp, while Nako always had a strong sense of justice and tries to use her powers for good almost as soon as she understands her powers.
  • Friend to All Children: Masanido is actually pretty friendly with the children from his neighborhood.
  • Get A Hold Of Yourself Man: Kayo gives Nako one of this (in her usual Jerkass way), to snap her from her fear of the Atasunmo that almost killed her.
  • Good Parents: While Kayo's parents are always absent, Nako's parents are very supportive of her.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: Kayo doesn't need much provocation to answer with violence.
  • How Do I Shot Web?: Because of her initial disinterest in transforming, Kayo didn't know how to fly or use her magical girl stick until her fight with Nako.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Kayo is violent, rude and crass, but she has a good side and can be kind on rare occasions.
  • I Know Mortal Kombat: Why is Kayo so good at fighting? Because she played lots of video games.
  • Lady Swears-a-Lot: Comes with being a delinquent, but Kayo is almost always cursing.
  • Lonely Rich Kid: Kayo comes from a wealthy family, but because her parents are always at work, she spends most of her time on the underground lair they made for her alone.
  • Ludicrous Gibs: Any Atasunmo stupid enough to attack Kayo ends up like this.
  • Mundane Utility: Kayo starts using her magical girl transformation as an easy way to make her hair drills.
  • Must Have Nicotine: Kayo has a serious smoking addiction, to the point that the first drag on a freshly-lit cigarette gives her a nearly-orgasmic sense of pleasure (stylized as a sparkly, curly Holy Shit!)
  • New Transfer Student: Because her school gets utterly wrecked, Nako transfers to Kayo's school. Masanido and his delinquent friends also later transfer to Kayo's school for the same reason.
  • Ojou Ringlets: Kayo's style, which is the only indicator she's from a rich family.
  • Older Than They Look: Rei Masanido may look the same age as Nako, but he's actually 25 years old and has been in high school for years nonstop.
  • Only Sane Man: Meow is the only one of the Mika that takes his job as a Mentor Mascot seriously, rather than wasting time enjoying Earth's pop culture.
  • Pink Means Feminine: Subverted hell and back. Kayo's magical girl outfit might be pink, but she's anything but an average feminine girl.
  • Punny Name: The main cast names are all incredibly lame puns in Japanese:
    • Majiba Kayo = "maji baka yo" = "seriously an idiot".
    • Masanido Rei = "masani dorei" = "absolutely a slave".
    • Shusai Nako = "shusai na ko" = "scholarly girl".
  • Perception Filter: Thanks to this any dead Atasunmo gets unnoticed by the general population.
  • Rivals Team Up: As much as they bicker with each other, Kayo and Nako do team up to fight Annabelle.
  • Smoking Is Cool: Kayo is practically a chain smoker, and feels withdrawal symptoms if she's not allowed a cigarette.
  • Synchronization: Thanks to the unusual way they bonded, Nako and Mon are linked in such a manner.
  • Too Spicy for Yog-Sothoth: When the Atasunmo that would become Mon devoured Nako, her pure aura was too much for him, giving her Magical Girl powers and making him sentient.
  • Undying Loyalty: Ever since she saved him from an Atasunmo, Masanido has blindly devoted himself to Kayo.
  • Unusually Uninteresting Sight: When Masanido brings Meow to the cafe he works at and introduces him as his "little brother", the manager and the customers don't find a Mentor Mascot to be odd at all.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: Sporadic flashbacks reveal that Kayo used to be a kind and normal kid, until an event involving her former best friend caused her to develop her cynical worldview.
  • Verbal Tic: Every mika and sochi ends their sentences with their names.
  • Wrong Assumption: Because of Mon misleading her, Nako believes Kayo is responsible for the deaths of her classmates. That Kayo doesn't bother to defend herself is not helpful either, although Nako does come to see Kayo is not evil.
