The Mask Of Power is a series of Skylanders tie-in books written by Onk Beakman (A Pen Name used by Cavan Scott) and beginning in 2013. The books all revolve around the same premise:

Once Upon a Time, a group of spell punks created a mask for a great king, referred to as the Nightmare King. The Nightmare King used the power of the mask to terrorise Skylands, before eventually the mask was stolen from him and split into 8 pieces all across Skylands. Thousands of years later, Kaos has set out to find all the mask pieces to reunite them and destroy Eon and the Skylanders, prompting them to try to find the pieces before he can.

    Books
  • Spyro versus The Mega Monsters (2013) - Super-sized critters are popping up and causing havoc all over Skylands! Spyro and his fellow Skylanders set out on a mission to work out what's going on and save the day - but it seems the scheming Kaos is intent on beating them to it.
  • Gill Grunt and the Curse of the Fish Master (2013) - As sea creatures gang up on the landlubbers of Skylands and the mermaids of Last Chance Cove abandon their underwater kingdom, Gill Grunt embarks on an incredible adventure.
  • Lightning Rod Faces the Cyclops Queen (2013) - The greatest Storm Titan of them all is about to make a royal appointment with his biggest challenge yet. Lightning Rod teams up with Drobot, Double Trouble and Pop Fizz to journey to a far-off city where the locals have an eye for trouble!
  • Terrafin Battles the Boom Brothers (2014) - Boom! When some innocent-looking sweet stuff explodes in a Gillman's face, it leads Terrafin on an amazing journey to the summit of Junk Mountain. Can he and his friends conquer Kaos or is Terrafin, the biggest brawler, about to meet his match?
  • Cynder Confronts the Weather Wizard (2014) - Storm clouds are gathering - which wouldn't be unusual, if it wasn't for the fact that this is meant to be the Cloudless Desert! As weird weather reports flood in from all over Skylands, Cynder heads off on a mission to the Isle of the Undead to find out what's going on. Whatever it is, it definitely looks like rain!
  • Stump Smash Crosses the Bone Dragon (2014) - The Giggling Forest has been reduced to tears, the Skylanders have been double-crossed and Master Eon has been kidnapped! Step forward Stump Smash to head into battle - against one seriously angry dragon!
  • Eruptor Meets the Nightmare King (2015) - He might be one of Skylands' fieriest characters, but even Eruptor feels a chill in his bones when he sees his own double frozen in ice! What starts with a cold snap leads to a red-hot adventure as everyone's favourite Lava Monster takes on a nightmarish opponent.
  • Trigger Happy Targets the Evil Kaos (2015) - The race is on to reach the final segment of the Mask of Power! Can Kaos be stopped from piecing the Mask together and using it to terrorize Skylands? There's one giggling, gold-slinging gremlin who sure thinks so!

The Mask Of Power series contains examples of:

  • Been There, Shaped History: Eruptor Meets the Nightmare King reveals that Eruptor, Grim Creeper, and Slam Bam were actually part of the group that had split the Mask of Power in the first place, as they assisted Wizbit in stealing it from the Nightmare King.
  • Covers Always Lie: On some covers for Spyro versus The Mega Monsters, Gill Grunt is featured on the cover, but he's merely a minor character in the book.
  • Dismantled MacGuffin: The titular Mask of Power was split into 8 pieces, one for each element, hundreds of years ago. Nobody knows what would result if the mask was reformed, but everyone knows it won't be anything good.
  • Down in the Dumps: Terrafin Battles the Boom Brothers features the Junk Mountains, a large mountain and plains region consisting of acres upon acres of junk, metal, scrap, and other items.
  • Fantastic Flora: Hurrikazam owns the only known Amazing, Fantastic, Incredible, Suprising, Unfathomable, All-Coloured Rose in existence, a flower that is the deepest most vibrant red, before switching to deep vibrant blue, before yellow, and so on. As it turns out, it's so in-tune with life, the undead segment of the mask went into its seed.
  • Going to Give It More Energy: Hex employs this to destroy Kaos's elemental power stealing machine. She proclaims herself the most powerful undead sorceress, and it turns out she isn't kidding, as her powers prove to be too much and make the machine explode.
  • Heavy Sleeper: The Bone Dragon from Stump Smash Crosses the Bone Dragon is such a deep sleeper that it fell asleep one day, stayed asleep for hundreds of years, and eventually had an entire forest grow over it.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: One of Kaos' final steps in his plan during Trigger Happy Targets the Evil Kaos was to turn Hugo in a sheep to get him out of his way after the Mabu was used to help find the last piece of the mask. When the day has been saved, both Kaos and Glumshanks get turned into sheep themselves by Eon.
  • Mind-Control Device: The Fish Master's Crown allows the wearer to completely mind control any sea creature, no matter who they are or who they work for.
  • Near-Villain Victory: Trigger Happy Targets the Evil Kaos has Kaos finally assemble the Mask, and steal the powers from the Skylanders. They still do eventually manage to defeat him.
  • Non-Human Undead: The Bone Dragon serves as one.
  • Power Parasite: In Trigger Happy Targets the Evil Kaos, when Kaos assembles and puts on the mask, it's revealed that it doesn't give you any powers itself, but that it can steal the powers from anyone.
  • Rotating Protagonist: Each of the eight books stars a different Skylander from one element each, and the accompanying Skylanders switches up as well.
  • Stable Time Loop: Eruptor Meets the Nightmare King begins with Eruptor finding his own frozen body encased in ice, alerting the Skylanders something time travel related will occur. At the end of the novel, after traveling back in time, Eruptor eats the Big Bad Ice Bomb to stop it from freezing the world, encasing himself in ice instead to be unfrozen in the future.
  • Taken for Granite: In Stump Smash Crosses the Bone Dragon, the titular bone dragon has laser breath that can petrify just about anything or anyone. According to the book, even creatures made of stone already can be petrified. Breath from the dragon's nostrils can also cure its petrification.
  • Villain of Another Story: Nefarion met in Eruptor Meets the Nightmare King was the mastermind behind the Mask of Power's creation and led a purge against all the Portal Masters thousands of years ago. He was only ever encountered because Kaos, followed by Eruptor, Slam Bam and Grim Creeper, went back to his time. And at the end of the book when some alterations in the past has been made, he flees his castle before the Big Bad Ice Bomb went off, his whereabouts being unknown.
  • Weather-Control Machine: In Cynder Confronts the Weather Wizard, the Hurrikazam is revealed to actually be powerless and incapable of doing anything himself, he just owns one of these.
  • Weather Manipulation: In Cynder Confronts the Weather Wizard, Hurrikazam is believed to have complete control over the weather all across Skylands. He's actually powerless himself, he just has his own Weather-Control Machine.
