Leading up to 281,042 years before the end of the universe

  • Owl-like beings living on the moon of a ringed planet receive a signal from a spatial anomaly that will later be known as the Eye of the Universe. They deplete their homeland's resources to build a ringworld capable of an interstellar voyage, and follow the Eye's signal to a foreign star system. Once there, the aliens receive an apocalyptic vision that compels them to block the Eye's signal so that no one may trigger the end of the universe. One alien, who interprets the vision differently, briefly unblocks the signal, but is imprisoned for their efforts. The aliens retreat into a simulated reality while their ringworld continues to hide the Eye from the rest of the universe. (Outer Wilds: Echoes of the Eye)
  • A strange seed takes root on the fifth world of the star system near the Eye of the Universe, tearing the planet apart and leaving behind what will later be called Dark Bramble. (Outer Wilds)
  • A clan of Nomai briefly receive a signal from a spatial anomaly that is somehow older than the rest of the universe. They hurriedly follow this signal in their Vessel, which suffers fatal damage after warping into Dark Bramble. Two Nomai escape pods successfully reach the planets of Ember Twin and Brittle Hollow, and the survivors build settlements there, eventually linking up with each other and exploring the local solar system. The Nomai encounter pre-sentient aquatic creatures on Timber Hearth, and take care not to harm them, while leaving them with enough resources to one day achieve space flight. As they continue their search for what they call the Eye of the Universe, the Nomai devise the Ash Twin Project, which would trigger the sun to go supernova and use the resulting energy to power a time loop, allowing them to re-fire the same probe millions of times on different trajectories until the Eye is found. Every step of the Project is finalized, but the Sun Station fails to trigger a supernova. (Outer Wilds)

281,042 years before the end of the universe

  • The Nomai searching for the Eye of the Universe are wiped out when a comet enters the local solar system, and the core of "ghost matter" within it detonates, instantly flooding the system with lethal energy that kills all terrestrial animal life. The aquatic species on Timber Hearth survives thanks to being protected by water, and is able to eventually develop into a sentient race. (Outer Wilds)

Just Before the End

  • Archetypes composed of all the souls of the universe (and roughly corresponding to the Major Arcana of the Tarot) occupy a city made of the last vestiges of matter remaining. Even they are uncertain of what they are, but theorize that they are shadows conjured by the universe in her dotage. As of Tim Hunter and Mister E's visit to this era, they are also dying out, with only The Hierophant, Emperor, Empress, and Fool remaining. The Fool gives the time travelers a good show, demonstrating that even in this place, magic exists. (The Books of Magic)
  • The Twelfth Doctor meets Ashildr/Me at the ruins of Gallifrey, after stealing a TARDIS and heading towards this point in time. (Doctor Who)
  • Lightning is awoken from her Crystal Stasis by Bhunivelze 13 days before the universe is consumed by the Unseen Chaos. She is tasked with saving the souls of humanity so they can be reborn in Bhunivelze's New World. (Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII)
  • The Hearthians develop space flight and begin to explore their solar system under Outer Wilds Ventures, discovering the ruins of the Nomai civilization. Their latest astronaut, the Hatchling, is killed by the sun going supernova shortly after their first flight, but finds themself caught in the 22-minute time loop set up by the Nomai's Ash Twin Project. The End of the Universe

  • Gaspar, Guru of Time, arrives at the End of Time. Later Crono and his friends use it as a hub for their adventures across history. (Chrono Trigger)
  • Lord English enters the universe at the precise moment that it ends. As he is an invincible time-traveling demon, this does not inconvenience him in the slightest, and in fact he uses his trans-temporal abilities to cause the very events earlier in the timeline that will eventually lead to his arrival.   • As time comes to a close, Death figures he will have to reap God. (Supernatural)
  • A self-repairing Stimulant known as the Inquisitor comes to the conclusion that there is no God or afterlife, and that the only purpose of existence is to lead a worthwhile life. He then constructs a time machine and uses it to judge every person in history. (Red Dwarf)
  • Lightning battles Bhunivelze to prevent him from turning humanity into his puppets or destroying them entirely. She succeeds just as the universe is consumed into chaos. (Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII)
  • Almost all of the matter in the Universe compresses into a single monobloc, surrounded by thin clouds of hydrogen which allow the Leonora Christine to continue flying. (Tau Zero)
  • The Hatchling repeatedly loops through time, learning that their sun is going nova as a result of reaching the end of its natural life cycle, the universe itself is ending, but the Nomai's automated Ash Twin Project successfully found coordinates to the Eye of the Universe. They break the time loop by taking the Advanced Warp Core from the Ash Twin Project, putting it in the Nomai's abandoned Vessel, and warping to the Eye of the Universe. The Hatchling enters the Eye and witnesses the end of the universe. (Outer Wilds)
  • In one alternate universe, Those Who Sit Above in Shadow agree that Loki has indeed (accidentally) brought peace to Asgard and thus shall be allowed to rule it.   • The embodiment of all evil, He-Who-Dares, is in the ruins of a castle on an asteroid in orbit of the last star in the entire universe. As Evil prevailed over Good, the universe is undergoing heat death, which will be followed by oblivion. Had Good won, the universe would have "evolved into a living, self-conscious being, capable of bootstrapping itself to a new, undreamed-of state of existence." He-Who-Dares manages to alter the course of history so that the people of Nu-Gotham defeat the Lizard-Men's assault on their city. This sets off a chain reaction which allows Good to emerge victorious and the universe to achieve sentience. (Legends of the Dead Earth)
