Fridge Brilliance

  • The Hedgies' plan to defeat Vincent, Gladys, and Dwayne hinges on tricking Vincent into jumping over the hedge, setting off the Depelter Turbo in Gladys' yard. Over the Hedge.
  • Lou compares the grass taken from his spikes with the condominium's grass, seeing that the latter is greener. It makes sense because the grass from the spikes would be drying out and losing color.
  • Vincent's punishment at the end is to be hauled off to the Rockies. At first, this just seems like a means to get him out of RJ's hair for good, but then you remember that the movie takes place in the Eastern United States, where black bears are the largest (and really only large) predator. And Vincent is depicted as a Villainous Glutton who likes to throw his weight around and bully smaller animals into doing his bidding, but in the Rockies, he'll have to deal with cougars, packs of wolves, and worst of all, grizzly bears, who are well known for bullying and outright killing their smaller cousins (often with little provocation) in real life. Vincent's going to have to deal with his own Vincent, if not several. Talk about Laser-Guided Karma.
  • Unlike the other wild animals in the film, turtles are rarely ever considered pests in real life. This greatly reflects Verne's unwillingness to steal from the humans or have anything to do with the suburban neighborhood on the other side of the hedge.
  • It makes sense for Verne to be the de facto leader of the Hedgies, as having a shell gives him extra defense. This allows Verne to take the lead in a dangerous situation without as much of a risk of dying, giving everyone else a chance to escape a coming threat. We even see the other animals hide behind him when they first encounter "Steve."

Fridge Horror

  • Vincent's line about how he and RJ are "two of a kind" and how he got where he is by hurting people may seem out of nowhere. However, remember that Vincent stole the food he originally had; he is, for all intents and purposes, a thief. Vincent also had a massive food pile at the start of spring, when his hibernation period has ended; he had stolen more food than he possibly needed. Bears, when raiding food from humans, have been known to seriously injure, or even kill, people; Vincent has harmed others for the sake of his greed.
  • The Depelter Turbo sounded gruesome enough already and was Played for Laughs with Vincent, Gladys, and Dwayne but ... who's to say they weren't the first victims to be accidentally hit with that thing? Not just adults, but people's pets and children too? Why else would it be illegal in every state except Texas?
