Fridge Brilliance

  • Fridge Brilliance can explain Shizuru's Psycho Lesbian phase. She doesn't become unhinged until after Nagi informs them all of the true nature of the Festival. Shizuru is pretty sharp. Her MIP is a HiME, as was she. She knew there was no way she could win. If she lost, Natsuki would vanish. If Natsuki lost, her MIP would vanish. Shizuru didn't know who Natsuki's MIP was, and given some of her statements, she had no reason to believe that it was herself. But she knew that if Natsuki lost, she would be deeply hurt by it. She was backed into a corner, and couldn't see a way out. Even suicide was out because Nagi had informed them all that killing yourself would instantly cause the death of your MIP.
    • In the Drama CD track "As the Cherry Blossoms Bloom," this is confirmed when it is revealed that Nagi approached her individually at some point after Episode 16, told her about the fate of the Himes, and said that she won't be able to hide any longer "because (her) beloved Natsuki-chan is not going to be able to escape this fate, either." Shizuru then realizes that her losing will cause Natsuki to vanish, but then wonders if Natsuki will one day accept her feelings.
    • So it makes sense for Shizuru to go insane when Nagi—who doesn't have the greatest track record for telling the truth to begin with, as a "sharp" person should easily notice—makes unfounded verbal threats, even though she didn't give a crap about Natsuki and managed to act completely rationally back when Alyssa was actually about to kill her with a proven Kill Sat? How does that even remotely work?
      • She didn't know back then of the clause where Childs dying kill one's MIP. As for Nagi's track record of telling the truth he does in a cruel Exact Words fashion. He either tells the truth or doesn't tell you anything.
    • Even worse, Shizuru probably realizes that there's probably no way for Natsuki to be defeated without a horrific (to Shizuru) revelation. If Natsuki's MIP is Shizuru, then Shizuru will find out that what she'd always wanted could have been as she is disintegrating. If Natsuki's MIP isn't Shizuru, then Shizuru is hit with the revelation that Natsuki doesn't return her feelings, and, if Natsuki's MIP were a boy, might not be able to return her feelings.
  • Shizuru's supposedly raping Natsuki being left ambiguous, with even the writers refusing to confirm or deny it, seems like a bit of a cop-out. But then you consider that the most relevant issue, from a story perspective, is not whether it happened, but that Natsuki, at least for a moment, thinks that it happened. The entire situation came about in large part because Natsuki lost her powers from hearing that her mother was planning to sell her to the Searrs Foundation, and the idea that Natsuki could have been betrayed by someone so dear to her shakes her to the core. The mere idea of Shizuru doing something similar to Natsuki by raping her in her sleep would have a similar effect on her. In the end, however, Natsuki decides to trust "the mother (in her) heart", rather than question what was said about was true, and it is likely for similar reasons that she chose to forgive Shizuru. It also complements Natsuki's character development, going from someone who couldn't trust anyone, to learning to trust others only to have that trust possibly broken, to someone who once again trusts people close to her.
  • According to Japanese mythology, Japanese nobles are descended from dragons, who instinctively know their soulmates. Once they have met and been accepted by their chosen mate, their physical and mental health depends on the continued presence of their mate. Fujino Shizuru is probably of noble blood, if her skill in the traditional arts is anything to go by. Met Natsuki, had issues remembering that other people mattered, but was kept relatively stable by Natsuki's presence. Note that she didn't snap until she was blatantly rejected by Natsuki, and was brought back to sanity by same's acceptance. Diagnosis: Her Inner Dragon was bashing its head against the wall.
  • Shizuru says she never wanted Natsuki to know about her "wicked love", but it may well have been a case of Transparent Closet, with a touch of Everyone Can See It. Natsuki was a known delinquent, frequently cutting class and riding a motorcycle on school grounds against the rules. She wasn't on the Student Council or part of Haruka's Executive Committee. She wasn't even a gopher, like Tate. She had no reason to be in the Student Council Room, but was there frequently. And in one of the drama CDs, Shizuru made it a point to visit Natsuki while she was sick. Basically, the Student Council President is hanging around a problem student two grades behind her, with no plausible official reason to hang around her. This may be a part of why Haruka included Natsuki in her condemnation of Shizuru, because she would certainly be aware of at least some of these things, and believed Natsuki invited Shizuru's affections/attention.
  • Supplemental materials tell us Shizuru was quietly fighting Orphans in the background for awhile. This could explain her Brilliant, but Lazy tendencies. She was fighting monsters and supporting Natsuki in secret. But unlike Natsuki, she didn't cut classes. So to maintain her image as a competent president of the student council, she delegated authority when necessary/possible, to conserve energy for extracurricular activities.
  • Natsuki's CHILD resembles a wolf, which can explain why she's an Ineffectual Loner, but more successful as part of a team or working towards the good of others. Lone wolves tend not to have as much success at hunting as an established pack.
  • Episode 4. Several girls have their panties stolen by an Orphan. Comments by Nagi suggest that he's responsible for them. Later in the episode, Takeda is confronted by an Orphan, the self-same Takeda who has been trying to hit on Natsuki, and it drops a pair of panties on his head. What are the Vegas odds that Nagi had the Orphan deposit Natsuki's panties on her Abhorrent Admirer For the Lulz?
  • Natsuki is introduced as a "lone wolf" and Mikoto is frequently described in feline terms. No wonder they fought like cats and dogs during their first meeting.
  • In most cases, when the MIP of the HiME is dying, it seems to be excruciatingly painful, as seen with Kazuya, Takumi, Haruka, and Tate. However, neither Natsuki nor Shizuru seem to be in pain when they fade away. Then you realize, the pain isn't the pain of dying. It's the pain of being severed, mystically, from the HiME that loves them. Natsuki and Shizuru were each other's MIP and were Together in Death, and so the pain of separation wasn't there for them.

Fridge Horror

  • Two of the HiMEs' MIPs aren't in Fuka, and presumably have no idea a fight is even going on, let alone that they're in any danger. From their point of view, they're just going about their business when they suddenly clutch their chest and start slowly disintegrating out of nowhere with no idea what's happening to them or why. Further, consider the people around them: particularly with Nao's hospitalized mother, a lot of people will suddenly see someone writhe in pain and disintegrate for no reason. And because said people don't know why it happened, they have no way of knowing that it won't happen to them. They will probably live the rest of their lives in fear of randomly disintegrating.
  • We see Shizuru in episode 25 wearing a tattered and frayed kimono, and the next time we see her, she's in her school uniform, and cleaned up. It was already established back in episode 4 that Shizuru was living in the same dorm as Mai, and Natsuki was at Mai's that night. Given Shizuru's mental state at the time, how different might their fight have turned out if Shizuru knew she and Natsuki were under the same roof that night?
