From left to right: Gabby, Paige and AJ

High schooler Paige Evans (Rowan Blanchard), an openly lesbian girl, is a budding artist working toward entry into a good arts college. She's attracted to fellow lesbian student Gabriela "Gabby" Campos (Isabella Ferreira), and contemplates joining track so she can be closer with her. Paige's future plans are placed in jeopardy when she's wrongly accused of being a tagger named KingPun who's been leaving graffiti all around the school.

Managing to get a reprieve from suspension by her principal, she's put on probation instead with the stipulation that she'll find the real tagger within a month. At the same time, she joins the track team not only to pursue Gabby but also help with her college prospects since it would be an extracurricular activity. She's placed in training with Gabby's twin sister AJ (Auli'i Cravalho). Things grow more complicated when Paige and AJ begin to fall for each other.

This work provides examples of:

  • Amazingly Embarrassing Parents: Paige's mom Angie embarrasses her through her flirting with the track coach, and getting overboard in her acceptance of Paige being a lesbian through sex toys she offers her.
  • The Big Damn Kiss: At the end, during her presentation Paige tells AJ how she feels about her, showing a mural that portrays them kissing. They then echo it by kissing in front of everybody. It's shown the pair are dating later.
  • Brain Bleach: Dillon says he has to get that image out of his head after Angie says she masturbates with her toothbrush.
  • But Not Too Bi: AJ is identified as bisexual, but only shows attraction to Paige, another girl.
  • Cast Full of Gay: Most of the named characters and those with lines are lesbians, along with one bisexual plus a nonbinary teen. This is justified by the fact that the main character is a lesbian, with these being different potential love interests at her school, though she's only interested in a couple.
  • Clear My Name: Paige gets accused of being a tagger who has been putting graffiti up around the school which she goes to. She gets a deal to reveal the real culprit, or she'll be suspended. AJ, the real culprit, eventually confesses and exonerates Paige from the charge.
  • Coming-Out Story:
    • Paige came out pretty young as a lesbian to her mom, who's surprised but also very accepting of it.
    • AJ's was very low key, though her sister Gabby made a big deal of coming out at her birthday party.
  • Disappeared Dad: Paige was conceived by sperm donation, since her mom's a single mother by choice, and mostly doesn't mind but admits it was hard sometimes with just her.
  • First Kiss: Paige and AJ share theirs while playing “7 Minutes in Heaven”. AJ soon finds out though that Paige's first kiss ever was with Gabby, AJ's sister.
  • Glamorous Single Mother: Paige's mom Angie says she chose to be a single mother, and seems to be well off, which could be chalked up to her profession as a doctor.
  • Good Cop/Bad Cop: Paige tells AJ she should be "bad cop" to her "good cop" while looking for the school's tagger. In actual practice though they both just act much the same. AJ turns out to be the tagger as well.
  • Hereditary Homosexuality: Gabby is a lesbian, while her twin AJ's bisexual.
  • Lesbian Jock: Gabby and AJ both compete on the school track team, which Paige gets onto pursuing the former. Another lesbian girl at the school who Paige doesn't want to date is really into riding horses too.
  • Love Potion: Chantal, a Wiccan girl at the school, has tried to cast love spells multiple times on Paige, but they don't work. Turns out the spell was for Paige and AJ, i.e. to get them together.
  • No Periods, Period: Averted. Paige mentions having difficulty using a tampon sometimes, and Wiccan Chantal uses her menstrual blood for painting, which is met with disgust by her peers.
  • Not What It Looks Like: Gabby apologizes for drunkenly trying to kiss Paige in front of AJ, whom Paige kissed the night prior. Naturally, AJ thinks Paige is really into Gabby, which was actually true until they kissed before this. Paige tries to explain, though AJ shuns her for a time.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: AJ is never called by anything but these initials.
  • Open-Minded Parent: Angie is extremely so, instantly accepting Paige's being a lesbian and getting a little too much for her taste sometimes, like offering her sex toys, for instance.
  • Platonic Life-Partners: Paige refers to her male best friend Dillon this way, and they almost constantly hang out together. They have been close for years, and bonded amusingly over the fact both like girls, thus there was never any chance of romance between them.
  • Relationship Upgrade: Paige and AJ get together after being driven apart briefly by a misunderstanding.
  • The Reveal: AJ confesses that she's King Pun, the tagger who Paige is searching for.
  • Sibling Triangle: Sisters AJ and Gabby both like Paige. At first, Paige liked Gabby, then AJ. After it comes out, AJ temporarily shuns Paige because it seems like she'd been used and doesn't want to be second picked either. Gabby realizes what's happened and urges AJ to get back with Paige.
  • Stalker with a Crush: Chantal is really into Paige, who doesn't reciprocate, even trying to cast Wiccan love spells on her. In Real Life, this is frowned upon by the Wiccan community as it's non-consensual. However, it turns out that Chantal was trying to cast those spells to get Paige and AJ to fall in love.
  • Too Much Information: Dillon complains of this after Angie talks about masturbating with a toothbrush.
  • Tough Love: AJ practices this while training Paige at first and admits her dad does the same with her. It clearly isn't to her liking and she even says she'll discuss it with a therapist in the future.
  • The Unfavorite: AJ feels like this to Gabby, though we don't see their parents interacting with them to judge that dynamic for ourselves. Regardless, Gabby is definitely the more popular and outgoing twin, and the one Paige has a crush on for years before really noticing AJ.
  • Unusual Euphemism: Dillon and his girlfriend Stacey use "going over her [class president] speech" when they actually mean sex. Paige, nearby, dryly says they aren't fooling anyone.
