Anything by Davner

  • Recommended by Will Z
  • Comments: One of the more interesting ones is Slayers Faces, about an interesting look at an unlikely duo. It wasn't meant to be a ship to upset the fans - it was more an experiment on HOW different pairings could or couldn't work. It goes on for a sequel or two and keeps it entertaining throughout.

Stories focused on the family and the friendly relationships of the cast. Plot-focused stories or light day-in-the-life stories. Pretty much anything that isn't focused on romance.

Slayers Reflect, Chaos, and Rebirth trilogy by Two Flower (TV Tropes page)

  • Recommended by Unknown Troper, Kilyle
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Somewhere beneath the shining sun, somewhere in the green and fertile lands the world, somewhere in the city/state of Sailoon, somewhere on the grounds of the Happy Traveler's Mega-Inn and Conference Center, something exploded.
  • Comments: The Slayers Reflect, Chaos, and Rebirth trilogy is amazingly good. It's by Two Flower, the same person who did Sailor Nothing, which might give you some idea of the quality. The characterization is perfect, and the plot starts out simple but quickly becomes more complex.
    • Kilyle: The fics I recommended in other areas are good but in many ways not as good as they could be. This Slayers series is quality writing with a tremendously effective plot. Also, I highly enjoyed the role played by Xelloss.
    • Comartemis: Original Flavor at its very best. This one's an absolute must-read for all Slayers fans everywhere.
    • AnoSa: I have to agree, but add a caveat: this predates Sailor Nothing significantly, and TwoFlower's writing style is still developing. It's quite good, but it's also very much an early work by an author who has a consistent tendency to improve.
    • wescotta: I actually like this one even better than Sailor Nothing, which is saying something. There isn't as much technical trickery going on, and the writing is certainly more primitive than Sailor Nothing, but the fast and loose style fits the source material pretty well. The Slayers Trilogy would never pass as fiction but as fanfic it's probably one of the best ever written.
    • thekashif: The writing starts off very amateurish, it's not bad but it's clear that this was some of his earliest work.
      • It gets better fast and his characterization is nearly perfect. I kinda get the feeling that he doesn't like Amelia though.
    • Dioschorium: Why has no one else commented on the line plagiarized from Harlan Ellison?
      • Because it's not plagiarism, it's an homage. The story is full of them.
    • The 17th Immortal: Good read overall, but MST3K Mantra may be required.

Slayers Demiurge by Two Flower

  • Recommended by: eagle108
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: The next generation of heroes meets the newest threat to the world.
  • Comments: If you enjoyed Slayers: Reflect, Chaos, and Rebirth, then you'll certainly enjoy Slayers Demiurge, which takes place in its own continuity where it's been nearly 20 years later. To say more would be doing this work a disservice.

Revolutionary Girl Amelia by ryoko11

  • Recommended by fortune cookie
  • Status: Dead
  • Synopsis: the slayers cast take over the roles of the Revolutionary Girl Untena characters. Amelia as the titular Utena and Zelgadis as the rosebride. He is not amused.
  • Comments: I rarely, if ever, like crossovers but this fic is the most hilarious thing I've read in quite a while. the characters are semi-aware of their actual relationships/roles. Some more, some less. Reading it for the first time I only had a vague idea of Utena -lots of roses, a prince, everyone is a bishonen- and it was funny even then. Enough to make me watch Utena in the first place and it got only better. I laughed out loud reading this. Only flaw: It's too short.

Shards of Chaos by Dust Traveller

  • Recommended by Seven Of Diamonds
  • Status: Dead
  • Synopsis: An epic next generation fic taking place after TRY, featuring Lina's daughter Mina falling in love with Gaav. Permanent hiatus, but worth it.
  • Comments:

Slayers Knightfall Assassins and Shadows by Tom the Mighty

  • Status: Dead
  • Synopsis: Lina and Gourry thought it was just going to be a vacation visiting Lina's family, but disturbing visions and unspeakable tragedy draw the Demon Slayers once more into chaos and death. Rated for Violence, Language, Crude Humor and some lime scented Febreze
  • Comments: The plot takes a turn to the grimdark side of the non-cannon-but-plausible. Yet despite the world going to hell in a hand-basket(case), the characters you know and love, and xellos, are still the characters you know and love, and xellos.

Nightmares in the Apocalypse by Lina Friend

  • ''Recommended by Endless D
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: a journey into a fantastical landscape in which the Second War of Resurrection has destroyed most of the Earth and its inhabitants, in which Lina, now a 22-year-old, copes with humanity's downfall, and in which she manages to pull herself together and launch a new war against the seemingly unstoppable monsters
  • Sequel: Nightmares in the Revelation

Darkness Without Light by Miss Nightfall

  • Recommended by Kilyle
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: A mishap with an artifact creates a dark alternate dimension where Lina lost control of the Giga Slave and not only harmed the world immensely but turned herself and Gourry evil. She ended up becoming an insanely powerful Mazoku — even rules over Beastmaster Metallia — and when Xellos mouths off one too many times she tears his tongue out and later turns him human. But Zelgadis, the only person here who recalls a time when the world wasn't this way, has a chance to fix it....
  • Comments: I only just rediscovered this fanfic — after searching fruitlessly for literally years (off and on), I thought it was likely gone from the internet. So you can tell it made an impression on me! But it's been ages since I read it so I hope the synopsis isn't too far off.

Stories focused on the romantic relationships between the cast.

Zel/Xel fics:

Poison by Tsutsuji

  • Recommended by Kilyle
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: En route to a holy shrine, Zelgadis runs into Xellos, who's heading toward the same shrine but seems to be oddly low-powered, not teleporting out of danger like normal and at one point seeming to be more wounded than reasonable from a fight. The bulk of the fic is the slow progress through a peasant-filled valley, learning questionable and then alarming news about what's going on with the shrine, the True Believers from the shrine, and what exactly is wrong with Xellos.
  • Comments: Heavy Zel/Xel within a few chapters, as they acknowledge their attraction for each other (but doubt the other's attraction for them) and, more pragmatically, need to give Xel the energy to continue. Mildly non-consensual elements, more for show than actually depicting what's going on between the characters (as in, both characters want it, but one lets the other believe it's non-consensual for Reasons).

Detour by Rose Thorne

  • Recommended by Kilyle
  • Status: Dormant
  • Synopsis: Xellos rescues Zelgadis from an alchemist's lab and is mystified by his desire to keep the heavily wounded chimera from dying. As Xellos struggles to come to terms with his affection (so far one-sided) and what it means for him as a Mazoku, as well as dealing with Zelgadis's death wish, some major plot points shake things up more permanently for the bewildered Priest.
  • Comments: Plays very slow with the relationship elements, which comes across as more realistic for Zelgadis's traumatized past. Includes a potentially triggering scene that doesn't get much further than a kiss but is very rape-y. The interactions between Xellos and the rest of the gang are particularly enjoyable and seem to hit the right notes.

Lina/Xellos fics:

With a Vengeance by Tsutsuji

  • Recommended by shathereal
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Lina follows a path of destruction straight to Xelloss. She's the only one who can stop him, but can she do what has to be done? And how much will she regret it if she does?
  • Comments: Lovely one-shot with a delightful twist that's not often found in Lina/Xellos fic. WAV is unique in that Lina takes the lead, rather than Xellos falling in line with "seductive devil" tropes.

The Absolution series (and prequels) by The Prime Minister

  • Recommended by Kilyle (with caveats)
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: At the end of the first fic (Circumnavigation, mostly a Zelgadis fic), Lina tricks Xellos into doing something that costs him dearly starting at the beginning of the second fic (Penance: Xellos has to deal with being human). Having recently run off on her own, leaving Gourry, Lina runs into Xellos, and after some waffling drags him along on her adventure, partly to help him learn to live as a human. Their budding relationship runs a rocky course, starting with unrequited love and eventually, after the relationship solidifies, going through a major hurdle when Zelas decides she's had enough and drags him away, turns him Mazoku again, and orders him to stay away from Lina (Reckoning: Xellos struggles to balance his desire for Lina with his duties to his mistress, while Lina struggles to determine what she really wants from her life). Finally, the six sections of Absolution deal with Xellos's attempt to repair their relationship and Lina's extreme reactions to the idea of getting tied down to anyone — especially a Mazoku.
  • Comments: If out-of-character portrayals drive you nuts, this fic might make you want to burn something. Almost every character is heavily Flanderized, to the point where I find Lina's characterization utterly repulsive (and since when does "paranoid jealousy" fit usually-oblivious, always-pleasant-and-generous Gourry in the slightest?). The relationships read like a soap opera with a heavily traumatized leading lady who creates drama out of every possible thing, some reasonable but most not. And the Earn Your Happy Ending is marred a bit by said happy ending including a sequence of emotionally traumatizing a major character out of petty revenge, after said character much earlier proved much more honorable than the leads. That being said, if you want a well-detailed look into Xellos as a loving father, or Xellos and Lina as a mostly-happily married couple (tail end of the series, and it takes forever to get there), without having Xellos actually become a good guy (just good toward those he actually cares about, like above-and-beyond-the-call-of-duty good), in a story with plenty of drama and some significant action scenes, and the back-and-forth of Xellos being turned human then Mazoku then human again (examining in detail all the problems that causes and all the factors it affects), then this is one tremendous fanfic well worth a shot.
  • Additional Note: Also, the author doesn't use quotes for dialog. And there's an oddity where words seem to be missing here and there, which seems to me to probably be the effect of moving it from the original site to Fanfiction.net and somehow the copying missed words in italics or something (best guess, anyway). The missing words aren't too troublesome.

Stories set in an Alternate Universe.

Of Life and Lemonade by J. Rhaye

  • Recommended by: Queen BEAUTY
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Alternate Universe set in modern-day southern California (in which the kingdom of Saillune and other locales are now regular towns and cities) centered around the lives and complex relationship between Amelia, now the daughter of an influential lawyer (Phil) and a law student, and Zelgadis, now a police detective. Suspense and drama ensue when Amelia, her father, and her sister begin getting threats from an unknown source, eventually spiraling into something even more dangerous. Traditional pairings and the like. On hiatus, but might be picked up again soon.
  • Comments: Arguably one of the best Alternate Universe Fics out there in general, as the authoress takes the setting and canon stories and seamlessly places them in a modern time setting without making awkward references. Characterization, while a bit off-key, is very good overall, and the writing is the perfect balance between flowery and straight to the point.) It is very long (37 chapters as of this writing, all lengthy, but worth it. Plot is stellar and interesting, as is the relationship dynamic between Amelia and Zelgadis. Amazing read, highly recommended.

Crossovers

A Sea Of Stars, by Noatun

  • Recommended by: CRB Wildcat
  • Status: Dormant
  • Crossover with: One Piece
  • Synopsis: From the description at Fanfiction.net: "Lina Inverse just can't catch a break! A few months after the defeat and banishment of Dark Star, just when she thought she was in luck, a mishap at the Temple of Chronos leaves the Slayers stranded in East Blue. The group is joined by Luke and Milina as they pursue their goals and dreams in this new world." Begins right around the Enies Lobby arc, before the events of Strong World.

Blood That Flows by Nanya

  • Recommended by: Golden Darkness
  • Crossover with: Lyrical Nanoha
  • Status: Dead; last updated September 2017
  • Synopsis: What if Nanoha's mother was really a certain sorceress known for destructive magic usage? Earth and Mid-Childa will never be the same again. Or much less said mother's home universe. That's right, her mother is none other than Lina Inverse.
  • Comments: This fic has a cracky premise, but it became a Fusion Fic that transforms canon (of both worlds) into something new while also bringing more character development as time goes forward. It is worth a read if given a shot but be warned that it is a Doorstopper.
