Fanfic / Ultraman Hero Academia

Go To

The world was hardly fair. That truth had been something Hiroshi Furinji had been familiar with for all of his life. In a world of superpowers and heroes, a Quirkless kid like him had no chance to be one himself.

Until a giant lizard appeared in Mustafu one day.

This My Hero Academia/Ultra Series Crossover written by MKDremareRiser can be read on Fanfiction.net, AO3, and on SpaceBattles.

This Fanfic contains examples of the following tropes:

  • Alien Among Us: There are aliens living amongst humanity hiding under the guise of Quirk-users.
  • Aliens Are Bastards: Virus and his subordinates certainly embody this trope.
  • Aliens Speaking English: Although Hero is unfamiliar with writing in kanji, he can easily communicate with humans.
  • All There in the Manual: A lot of info such as character relationships can be found as a part of the Ultraman Hero Academia: Data Files found here, here, and here.
  • Aloof Big Brother: Downplayed; while Hiroshi loves his older siblings Hayate and Kana, and they love him, they don't have a particularly close relationship due to the twin's overprotectiveness out of concern for their brother's Quirkless status.
  • Ascended Extra: Setsuna goes from a side character to being one of the main female protagonists; Class 1B as a whole also gets a lot more screen time.
    • Mt. Lady also gets more screen time during the VS. Hero Killer Arc as Hiroshi/Hero's mentor. This gives her a chance to go more in-depth about why she chose to be a hero.
  • The Ace: Ultraman Hero seems to be this due to the fact that he has access to all his Ultra abilities even when human-sized.
  • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: Where there's an Ultra and/or Alien involved, there's bound to be a giant kaiju that'll wreak havoc.
  • Achilles' Heel: Ultras have a natural weakness to extreme cold and a 3-minute time limit. However, Hero subverts both of this. According to his data page, he's trained himself to achieve temperature resistance and built armor that allows him to absorb sunlight which extends his time limit to 10 minutes at full size.
  • Berserk Button: Hiroshi HATES being seen as helpless or worthless for not having a Quirk.
  • Big Bad Duumvirate: Though the original League of Villain members are working together with Virus and his alien subordinates, both sides tolerate each other at best.
  • Blow You Away: Besides Hiroshi, all the members of the Furinji Family have some form of Air/Wind-based Quirk.
  • By the Power of Grayskull!: Whenever Hiroshi transforms into Ultraman Hero, he calls out "Hero!" In chapter 5, Izuku wonders out loud if Hiroshi doing so is because of this trope, or if it's just a symbolic ritual.
  • Childhood Friends: Setsuna is a childhood friend of both Hiroshi and Fuka having known them since elementary school.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Hiroshi/Hero delivers a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown towards Katsuki during their match in the Sports Festival.
  • Clip Show:
    • Chapter 26 is akin to this as Hero recounts certain events from various Ultra series; such as the creation/near destruction of the Plasma Spark & Belial and Zero's first appearances in Mega Monster Battle: Ultra Galaxy, his defeat at the hands of Geed in Ultraman Geed, the Ultimate Wars, etc.
    • Chapter 42 counts as a more traditional clip show, framing it as one of the messages Hero sends back to the Land of Light.
  • Death by Adaptation: Mustard, Muscular & Moonfish all meet their ends at the hands of Virus' subordinates.
  • Elemental Powers: Each of Hero's forms have an elemental power.
  • Empowered Badass Normal: Even before bonding with Hero, Hiroshi was trained in self-defense and martial arts, though he's self-admittedly not as good as others.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Everyone in Class 1A & 1B agree that Katsuki's volatile nature has gone too far after he fatally injures Fuka during their match without taking the sheer danger of exposing his explosions to the compressed air she carries into consideration. Even Monoma calls him out specifically without dragging any of the other 1A members into it.
    • Katsuki has shades of this himself. Although he bears a personal grudge against Hiroshi/Hero, it doesn't lean towards Fantastic Racism to aliens in general. When 4A(Anti-Alien Attack Alliance) approaches him with their anti-alien sentiments, he makes it clear he's not interested.
  • Eviler than Thou: Virus and his subordinates are much more dangerous and brutal compared to the League. The power gap between the human villains and the alien villains are clear as day.
  • Explain, Explain... Oh, Crap!:
    • In Chapter 13, Hiroshi idly hopes that Bakugo "isn't stupid, reckless, or insane enough" to go directly after Fuka's support with an explosion, because the compressed air inside it would cause a bigger explosion and make shrapnel fly everywhere. Then Setsuna notes that Katsuki is aiming for said gear...
    • At one point, Mebius tells Instructor Ampion that Team Argo hasn't shown up for training.
Ampion: They never appeared? But they left earlier than me to meet up with you. Where could they- (horrible realization) They better not be-
(Gilligan Cut to Team Argo flying toward Earth)
  • Fantastic Racism: Shigaraki is not fond of his Alien cohorts in the Unearthly League, there is a civilian group called 4A (Anti-Alien Attack Alliance) who blame Hiroshi/Hero for the alien attacks and a few members of the HPSC would prefer to lock them in a facility for experimentation.
  • Fingore: Shigaraki loses his right pinky and left middle finger during the USJ arc; the former courtesy of Hero and the latter due to Illne.
  • Foil: Izuku and Hiroshi. Both of them were Quirkless individuals subjugated to ridicule and bullying throughout their lives. Despite this, neither gave up on becoming a hero and remained kindhearted people. Both would eventually gain 'powers' through someone else; Izuku would inherit One For All from All Might whereas Hiroshi would become Hero's host. However, despite the parallels, they also contrast each other in many ways.
    • Izuku is an only child whereas Hiroshi has a younger sister and two older siblings.
    • Hiroshi's Childhood Friend Setsuna stayed by his side whereas Katsuki would become Izuku's tormentor.
    • Izuku still holds respect for Katsuki while Hiroshi has nothing but sheer disdain for Kenji.
    • Quirkless discrimination from their peers affected them differently. Izuku became timid, reserved and insecure whereas Hiroshi became cynical, abrasive and apathetic.
  • For the Evulz: Virus, god, where do we even start with this guy?
Pony: What's your endgame here, Virus!?
Virus: For a show! A show of despair! Of agony! You humans are just simply the most entertaining things I've seen in a long time! This planet's the most entertaining thing I've seen in a long time! Why not indulge in it!? In this world's darkness!?
  • Grade Skipper: Fuka is in the same grade as her brother Hiroshi despite being a year younger.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Mt. Lady is envious of Hero. Bad enough he can turn into a giant hero, he also has an array of other powers that leave her in the dust. However, her envy isn't malicious and after getting to know Hiroshi/Hero better as an intern, both have developed mutual respect for each other.
    • Hiroshi's bullies and some general studies students in UA were also envious of Hiroshi, believing he cheated to where he was because he was lucky enough to have Hero.
  • Inferiority Superiority Complex: Katsuki has developed this towards his alien classmates, Hero and Rigel, due to the Curb-Stomp Battle both of them have put him through during their first battles.
  • It's All About Me: Kenji and his friends resent Hiroshi and his friends, believing they're unworthy of being in hero schools; nevermind the fact that they themselves are nothing but egoistic bullies who never put in any effort to back up their talk. They also blame Hiroshi for turning Ryunosuke against them when they've been nothing but toxic friends who constantly peer pressured and belittled him until he had enough.
  • Multiform Balance: Beyond his base form Original, Hero has 3 other forms: Flash Hermes, Muscle Hercules, and Burst Helios
  • Properly Paranoid: Some people are in equal parts awed and terrified of the sheer power Hero/Hiroshi have, even when they're intentionally limiting their power. Knowing that there are beings out there who are infinitely stronger than your kind despite advancing to the point superpowers are the norm is naturally unnerving. Knowing those same beings are just as capable of cruelty and destruction doesn't help.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech:
    • In Chapter 2, three students from Gen Ed accuse Hiroshi of cheating his way into the Hero Course, not believing he's possessed by an alien.
Kosuke: I hate guys like you. You think everything's a big joke! That our hard work is something to laugh at! Well, it ain't funny, asshole!
Kirika: We worked day and night to get into UA, and here you are, getting in on some handout!
Hiroshi: Nah, that's not the big joke. (Cue Death Glare) It's you three. Let me guess, you all were constantly told that your Quirks are amazing! A+ material for being heroes unlike any other! That with a Quirk like yours, that UA just has to make you into heroes! So you work and work, trying to get yourselves pumped to do well. But oh no, it turns out that your best wasn't quite up to the plate! That's something you're not used to, not being the best! So you get bitter about it, and decide that anyone else that gets in before you has to have done something scummy to do so. Well, let me tell you that yes, I got in through an unusual way, but that doesn't mean I'm not going to work hard to earn my place. I'm going to put in twenty times the effort to catch up, and I'm not about to let three bitter jerks take out their frustrations on me laying down. Though I'd got to say, shaking down a fellow student and accusing them of cheating is one of the least heroic things a prospective hero student would want to do.
    • In Chapter 38, after Hayate and Kana accidentally cause Hiroshi to get injured from their smothering, blame him for it, and hurt him more (albeit accidentally) when they have someone with a healing Quirk try to heal him, Hiroshi hits his limit:
      Kana: Hiroshi, stop overreacting and-
Hiroshi: QUIRKS DON'T FUCKING WORK ON ME THE SAME WAY! TOUCH-BASED QURIKS LIKE HEALING ONES ONLY FUCKING HURT LIKE HELL! DON'T YOU GUYS LISTEN TO ME!?
      Kana: W-Wait, since when-
Hiroshi: I've told you two and our parents about this the second we found out about it! God, fuck, OW! (rubs shoulder) Because I'm Hero's host, it means that Quirks react differently for us! How could you not remember something important like that!?
Kana: S-See, this is why you shouldn't have that alien in you, he's-
Hiroshi: IT'S NOT HERO'S FAULT THAT YOU'RE SHITTY SIBLINGS! GOD, THIS IS WHY I'M SO GLAD THAT WE'RE NOT LIVING TOGETHER ANYMORE!
      Kana: W-What are you saying?
Hayate: Y-Yea, I thought we were-
Hiroshi: I'm so glad that I'm finally away from you two! You never listen to me! You never respect me! You only think about how I'm helpless 'cuz I'm Quirkless! God, I thought the smothering would've ended when you two moved out first, but no! I had to literally go live at UA so that you two would stop! I know you two think that you know what's best for me and that you're looking out for me, but I'M NOT HELPLESS! I've done so much shit in these past few months, but you never respected any of my achievements! You're never listen and forget actual important information! Like how QUIRKS REACT DIFFERENTLY TO ME!
      Hayate: I- I-
      Kana: Hiroshi, we-
Hiroshi: SAVE IT! I'm going back to my hotel room and sleep off this giant migraine and body aches I have now. When you see me at the reception, don't bother me.
  • Share the Male Pain: During the Sports Festival, Yaoyorozu accidentally hits Kirishima's crotch with a hammer. Needless to say, everyone felt that.
  • The Unmasqued World: At the end of Chapter 8 Hiroshi and Hero reveal the existence of Aliens to all the people on earth.
  • Terrible Artist: Hero can do many things. Drawing isn't one of them.
Momo: Um, well, you have a very-
Kyoka: Hero you suck at drawing.
Hero: What!? But I drew them exactly how they look!
Denki, pointing to a oddly lump appearing oval with eyes and a pointy stick pointing up from it: So one of them has a head that looks like a potato?
Hero: That's Mr. Ultraseven, and no, he doesn't!
  • This Is Unforgivable!: Hiroshi is all but out for blood after Katsuki risked killing his sister, Fuka by intentionally exploding her backpack of compressed air during their match.
  • Unknown Rival: Mt. Lady sees Hero as her rival as a giant hero but Hero does not pay her any special attention until UHA's Workplace Study Arc, where Hiroshi goes to her agency to get tips on how to operate in a city while giant.
  • Wham Episode: "The Days After" would make J. Michael Straczynski (the Trope Namer himself) proud: the Stain arc's winding down, the students of 1A and 1B are heading back to class, and they're doing another joint training exercise. Then all of a sudden, WHAM! Shihai accesses the same shadow world as Virus, the alien in question delivers a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown to him, and then Virus breaks into UA, exposing Shoto's Dark and Troubled Past and the secret to One For All to the students.
  • Whole Episode Flashback: Chapter 26 serves as this. Hero gives Class 1A, 1B, All Might and Principal Nedzu a recap of prominent events that's occurred throughout Ultra history.
