Fanfic / The Many Deaths Of Nemona Alegria

Go To

The Many Deaths of Nemona Alegria is a Pokémon fanfic created by aguyofmanythings on the Archive of our Own. It can be viewed here.

Everyone knows Nemona Alegria. She's one of the best students of Naranja Academy, one of the higher-ranked Champions of Paldea, and a girl with a real knack for Pokémon battling! And it turns out she also has a knack for dying. Over and over and over. And the United News Network (UNN) have taken it upon themselves to compile Nemona's many deaths...

The fanfic itself is quite simple in structure. Each chapter consists of a short article that depicts the events leading up to Nemona's death and the death itself (or the discovery of Nemona's body). Some of the later deaths are crossovers that bring in elements from non-Pokémon franchises.

This fic provides examples of:

  • A Deadly Affair: Florian seems to have a knack for getting Nemona killed via this...
    • Nemona commits suicide in Chapter 31 after learning that Florian was cheating on her with, presumably, Geeta.
    • Chapter 106, which takes place 10 years after the game's events, in which Juliana shoots Nemona five times after learning that her husband Florian was having an affair with Nemona.
  • Alien Abduction: This happens to Nemona in chapter 84 - the aliens proceed to throw her into a black hole.
  • A Molten Date with Death: In chapter 47 Nemona accidentally falls into Mt. Chimney in Hoenn and burns to death in seconds.
  • Amusement Park: Nemona is killed at one in chapter 21 after she is flung off a ride and subsequently struck by another one of the ride's cars.
  • Animals Hate Her: Well, it's more like "Pokémon Hate Her". Quite a few of Nemona's deaths involve a Pokémon doing her in:
    • Chapter 45 involves two Tyranitars fighting over her, eventually ripping her apart.
    • In chapter 50 a Walking Wake mauls her.
    • Chapter 51 has Nemona swarmed and stung to death by a swarm of Combees.
    • In chapter 70 Nemona falls into a sleeping Victreebel and is dissolved alive.
    • The crossover death with The Legend of Zelda in chapter 93 is a non-Pokémon example of this trope, having Nemona swarmed and killed by a flock of Cucoos.
    • Chapter 98 has an example that also doubles as an Animal Stampede, having Nemona fatally trampled by a herd of Paldean Tauros.
    • Nemona is mauled by a Hydreigon in chapter 94.
  • Artistic License – Gun Safety: In chapter 38 the host of a gun show leaves a hunting rifle loaded on a display table and his Pawmi loose - with the result that an accidental trigger-pull by the latter fatally shoots Nemona in the stomach.
  • Belly Flop Crushing: Chapter 46 involves Nemona partaking in a Dynamax Raid Battle in Galar and defeating a Gigantamax Meowth, only for it to collapse on her, fatally crushing her.
  • Bolt of Divine Retribution: Nemona makes an ill-advised attempt to capture Arceus himself in chapter 100, and promptly earns herself a strike from a full-power Judgement attack that not only kills her but completely erases her from existence.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: Lampshaded in chapter 68, where Nemona reads the fanfiction itself and is so horrified by the contents she suffers a fatal heart attack from the shock.
  • Butt-Monkey: Nemona.
  • Came from the Sky: In chapter 2 Nemona dies when a deorbited weather satellite falls from the sky and crashes into the tent she is sleeping in.
  • Chest Burster:
    • The Trope Codifier from Alien has its own crossover death in chapter 95. Take a wild guess as to who its victim is...
    • Chapter 101 is a more realistic take on this trope, involving a new species of parasitic Beedril, one of which uses its stinger to put Nemona in a zombie-like state before implanting one of its young, which eats her alive from the inside.
  • Class Trip: Chapter 102 inserts Nemona into the events of The Teal Mask, only for Kieran (a rare male example of a yandere) to go cuckoo for Florian and murder her to keep her from claiming him.
  • Crossover: Chapter 71 introduced "crossover deaths", deaths where Nemona is killed by something from a non-Pokémon franchise.
  • Deadly Book: The actual Death Note appears in its own crossover death in chapter 75, where it is used to kill Nemona.
  • Deadly Gas:
    • In chapter 20 Nemona accidentally asphyxiates herself with chlorine gas during an attempt to unclog a toilet gone wrong.
    • Chapter 92 has Nemona asphyxiated by toxic gases produced by rotting potatoes.
  • Death by Ambulance: Nemona falls victim to this trope in chapter 62.
  • Death by Childbirth: In chapter 14 Nemona (who is 26 years old during the events) passes away from surgical complications after the delivery of her daughter.
  • Demonic Possession: The crossover death with Mario, chapter 83, involves Mario using Cappy to possess Nemona so he can clear a ravine, leaving Nemona to plummet into said ravine to her death.
  • Disney Villain Death: Well, Nemona's not a villain, but in chapter 52 Nemona falls to her death from the Pokémon Tower in Lavender Town after a Gengar scares her to the point her flinch of fear accidentally sends her over the safety fence.
  • Driven to Suicide: Both chapters 5 and 31 involve Nemona committing suicide after her life is shattered by a revelation.
  • Ejection Seat: Nemona is killed by one in chapter 66 after mistaking it for a regular seat.
  • Elevator Failure: In chapter 61 Nemona falls victim to this when she falls down the shaft of one of Naranja's elevators (the elevator itself suffered a pully malfunction).
  • Erotic Asphyxiation: In chapter 16 Nemona tries auto-erotic asphyxiation. No prizes for guessing how it ends...
  • Et Tu, Brute?: In chapter 25 Nemona is fatally attacked by her own starter Pokémon. Justified as it was suffering from a prion disease that cranked up its aggressiveness.
  • Falling Chandelier of Doom: In chapter 80 an attempt by Nemona to catch a Gastly at a party goes sour when the Ultra Ball uses misses and strikes the ceiling chandelier with enough force to dislodge it, and it falls on top of Nemona, killing her and several others.
  • Fatal Fireworks: In chapter 15 Nemona is killed when a firework explodes in her face.
  • Go Mad from the Revelation: In chapter 5 Nemona somehow receives an epiphany that tells her her true nature as an NPC in a video game, and unable to handle this knowledge she commits suicide.
  • Half the Woman She Used to Be: The crossover death with Star Wars in chapter 91 has Nemona split in half by a lightsaber-wielding maniac.
  • Harmful Healing: Exaggerated in chapter 63 - Nemona is given a liver transplant to treat an infection of hepatitis C, only the doctors use a liver with the wrong blood type, the subsequent symptoms killing her after twelve days.
  • Head Crushing: In chapter 30 Nemona is killed in an accident involving a Starmobile after she is knocked down by a flying rock and her head is crushed by its wheel.
  • Human Sacrifice: This is done to Nemona by a Giratina-worshipping cult in chapter 72.
  • Idiosyncratic Episode Naming: All of the chapters so far follow the naming scheme of "Death by [what killed Nemona]" or some minor variation thereof.
  • Killing Your Alternate Self: In chapter 69 Nemona has a Pokémon battle with her Violet counterpart, but an accusation of cheating sparks a fight that ends up turning deadly for Nemona.
  • Land Mine Goes "Click!": Averted in chapter 76. Whilst attempting to sneak up on a shiny Lechonk Nermona accidentally triggers an unexploded landmine that detonates immediately, dismembering her.
  • Life Energy: The crossover death with Metroid in chapter 77 involves one of that franchise's titular creatures stealing Nemona's life force.
  • Life Will Kill You:
    • In chapter 7 Nemona passes away in her sleep from a brain aneurysm.
    • Chapter 56 has Nemona abruptly expire in the middle of a history lesson for unknown reasons.
  • Literally Shattered Lives: Chapter 85, the crossover death with Mortal Kombat, has this inflicted on Nemona by Sub-Zero.
  • Murder-Suicide: Chapter 55 involves Nemona, with unhinged romantic thoughts about Juliana, first killing Juliana and then herself.
  • Named by the Adaptation: None of the characters in the games have last names, so aguyofmanythings duly provided them with surnames for the fic:
    • Nemona is given the last name Alegria, which he took from another fic.
    • Florian and Juliana have the surnames Scarlet and Violet respectively, taken from the names of the two games of Gen IX.
    • Arven's Japanese name Pepper is turned into his surname in this fic. Penny's Japanese name Botan is used for the same purpose.
    • Sada has the last name Chronos, taken from the name of the pre-Socratic personification of time.
    • Keiran and Carmine have the last name Greenblue, a portmanteau of the colours green and blue, which when mixed yield teal, alluding to The Teal Mask.
    • Perrin is given the last name Kodak, from the real-life camera company of the same name.
  • No Such Thing as Dehydration: Averted in chapter 48, which has Nemona get lost in Unova's Desert Resort and dehydrate to death.
  • One-Hit Kill: Chapter 8 has Nemona punched in the head by a drunken youth, knocking her to the ground and inflicting brain damage that eventually proves fatal.
  • Out with a Bang: Chapter 27 has Nemona succumb to a heart attack during sex with Florian.
  • Parasol of Pain: In chapter 9 Nemona, while on a beach trip, is impaled by an umbrella ripped loose by high winds.
  • Perfect Poison: In chapter 10 Nemona accidentally exposes herself to dimethylmercury and slowly dies over the course of ten months.
  • "Pop!" Goes the Human: In chapter 41 whilst helping Giamono inflate a Starmobile's tires Nemona accidentally stabs herself in the stomach with the pump, which fills her with air until she bursts.
  • Portal Cut: Juliana does this by accident in chapter 97, the Portal crossover death. Whilst holding the ASHPD she closes the portals whilst Nemona is looking though one, decapitating the latter.
  • Precision F-Strike: Nemona doesn't swear, except for once in Chapter 68 where she lets loose a flurry of curses upon reading the fanfic before her heart attack.
    • Also in Chapter 106, though it does become an example of Curse Cut Short when Juliana shoots her.
  • Ripped from the Headlines: Several deaths are based on real-life incidents, a few of which were included in 1000 Ways to Die.
  • Sand Necktie: In chapter 42 some of Nemona's friends do this to her and then leave her there as a prank, apparently not accounting for the tide, and by the time they realise their mistake the tide has come up and drowned her.
  • Serial Killer: Nemona is murdered by one in chapter 17.
  • Sickbed Slaying: Done to Nemona in chapter 74 - while she is recovering from an accident in the hospital an unknown attacker laces her IV with poison, killing her.
  • Slashed Throat: An accident at an ice skating resort in chapter 99 results in this being inflicted on Nemona, killing her in minutes.
  • Ski-Resort Episode: Chapter 88 has Nemona visit a ski resort, only to end up getting into a fatal accident.
  • Sneeze of Doom: Chapter 24 has Nemona killed by Ash's Pikachu sneezing and electrocuting her.
  • Spontaneous Human Combustion: How Nemona dies in chapter 54.
  • Squashed Flat: Defied in chapter 35, which involves Nemona being run over by a runaway steamroller and crushed in a gruesome manner.
  • Suicide Attack: The crossover death with Minecraft in chapter 71 has Nemona blown up by a Creeper.
  • Surprisingly Sudden Death: In chapter 56 Nemona slumps down dead in the middle of a history class.
  • To Serve Man: The crossover death with Pac-Man in chapter 81 involves Nemona being eaten by... guess who.
  • They Killed Kenny Again: Every single chapter involves Nemona dying.
  • The Plague: In chapter 78 Nemona dies from an infection of a so-called "novel plaxiavirus" that is an obvious expy of COVID-19.
  • The Walls Are Closing In: Chapter 26 involves Nemona getting stuck in a trash compactor and fatally crushed.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: Chapter 40 is much gentler on Nemona than the other chapters, having her pass away peacefully at the age of 103 having lived a great life, leaving behind a great legacy and many descendants.
  • Torches and Pitchforks: In chapter 22 Nemona is brutally lynched by a mob of vigilantes who suspect her of being a local pedophile.
  • Trapped in Another World: Deconstructed in chapter 87, the crossover death with Amphibia. Nemona somehow gets her hands on the Calamity Box and is given the Anne Boonchuy treatment, but upon arriving in Amphibia she appears next to a hungry heron that kills her in seconds.
  • Undignified Death: Nemona suffers one in chapter 90 when she chokes on a pretzel.
  • Wood Chipper of Doom: How Nemona dies in chapter 1 - whilst she is loading branches into a wood chipper a Smoliv trips her up and she falls into the machine, being shredded.
  • Yandere:
    • Nemona shows shades of this in Chapter 55, displaying increasingly unhinged romantic thoughts about Juliana before killing her in a Murder-Suicide.
    • Chapter 102 shows her unfortunately falling victim to Kieran, who has become this for Florian.
