Fanfic / Thaumaturge Cycle

Go To

The Thaumaturge Cycle is a series of Redwall fanfictions written by Casterway. Unlike the canon series, there is a clear-cut use of magic, which is brought to the forefront.

Currently, the cycle is merely composed of a single novella, Before Meteor, which was planned to be a full novel, but serves as a prologue to later fanfictions.

This work contains examples of:

  • Altar Diplomacy: Erlend and Lorelei. Both of them were married to other otters before, but even though Lorelei's first husband is dead, Erlend's spouse is still alive, which leads to friction between the new couple...
  • Always Chaotic Evil: Largely averted compared to the canon series.
  • Always Lawful Good: Unlike the above, completely averted.
  • Arranged Marriage: Aside from the many examples which happened before the story began, Lorelei is trying to set Kiormund up with a Graillard daughter. Kio himself isn't totally averse to the arrangement.
  • Awful Wedded Life: Erlend and Lorelei. As their child, Kiormund suffers.
  • Amplifier Artifact: Amplifiers.
  • Another Dimension: The Dreamscape.
  • Big, Screwed-Up Family: The Streambattles. Lamont and Erlend loath each other's guts. The former takes his duty to his kingdom to an insane degree, while the latter is a bigamist who neglects one of his wives and their child. And we've yet to see all of it...
  • Cain and Abel: Lamont and Erlend. Who's who is not made clear, as both of them are definitely not good beasts, but calling them 'evil' is quite the stretch.
  • The Cavalry: In the backstory, when Southsward forces save Redwall Abbey from being overwhelmed by vermin.
  • A Child Shall Lead Them: As of the end of Before Meteor, Kiormund is all set to become Lord of Helskerland.
  • Clap Your Hands If You Believe: Thaumaturgy operates by this principle. Whatever you can dream of and believe can happen in the real world (assuming you have an Amplifier and are of the right kind), will happen.
  • Court Mage: Isangrim and later Hirsent to Kiordan, covertly.
  • Cultural Posturing: The Laskarines tend to do that a lot.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Question 1: What happens when you tell your daughter that she has magical powers, and tell her to self-study for two decades, all while not seeing her? Question 2: What were you thinking, Kiordan?
  • Dream Land: The Dreamscape is a location accessible to any sleeping beast, and anything could be done within.
  • Dreaming of Things to Come: Badgerlord Eboric dreams that his killer is approaching him, though who they are remains to be seen.
  • Elective Monarchy: Kiordan's empire.
  • The Emperor: Kiordan. And across the mountains, Gregorios.
  • Five-Man Band: Margane and her group marching north.
  • Five-Second Foreshadowing: Kiordan reveals that anything happening within the Dreamscape, up to and including death, carries into the waking world a few sentences before Isangrim dies in his sleep.
  • Funetik Aksent: Less overt as the canon series. All characters from the Southern Realms speak without an accent on text.
  • Grand Theft Me: Oswin pulls this off on Thordan.
  • Happy Marriage Charade: Averted. Erlend and Lorelei don't even try.
  • Hated by All: Isangrim. Everyone is all too eager to joke about him not even a week after he died.
  • Hegemonic Empire: Kiordan prefers to have everybeast talk things through rather than fight to preserve his realm's strength.
  • Idiot Ball: Kiormund holds onto it like it's his favourite toy. Seriously, what caused you to believe a letter supposedly sent from your father that leads you into the clutches of his greatest enemy?
  • Jerkass: Isangrim and Erlend.
  • Large Ham: Definitely Kiordan, somewhat Lamont.
  • My Country, Right or Wrong: Erlend clearly has shades of this regarding his dream of restoring Travrik. He is a bit less aware that he's not running his lands that well.
  • Oops! I Forgot I Was Married: Averted by Erlend, who was aware that Sigrid was alive when he married Lorelei.
  • Peace Conference: Kiordan is trying to get one set up to prevent Lamont and Erlend from clashing again.
  • Politically-Active Princess: Lorelei.
  • Ruler Protagonist: Kiormund is set up to be one.
  • Ruling Couple: Kiordan and Marla.
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: Lamont and Erlend. The jolly celebrant versus the sour complainer.
  • Tracking Spell: Hirsent uses one on Lorelei's ring Amplifier.
  • Two Lines, No Waiting: The story splits in three as Margane journeys north to meet the Juska, Kiormund goes to Helskerland to take care of his new duties as lord, while Lorelei and Egil navigate the unstable political environment of Gystra.
  • The Unfavorite: Erlend prefers Sigrid's pups over little Kiormund.
  • Your Mind Makes It Real: Everything in the Dreamscape.
