Fanfic / Of Heists And Hustles

Go To

Of Heists and Hustles is a crossover between Zootopia and Sly Cooper.

The world's largest gemstone has arrived in Zootopia! Sly wants to steal it. Judy wants an adventure. Nick just wants his partner to survive to the end of the week. Things are complicated by a foxy Interpol inspector and a rival gang led by a dangerous, shadowy mastermind. As new relationships are forged, old ones begin to strain...

Of Heists and Hustles contains examples of:

  • Brick Joke: It's mentioned early on in the story that, despite repeatedly saying that she's not actually running for mayor, Gazelle was in the lead during the early polls. In the epilogue, she's rather embarrassed that she still ended up in fourth.
  • Could Say It, But...: Technically there's only supposed to be one Interpol liaison, Nick, but Chief Bogo does some wordplay that basically tells Nick that if Judy tags along, he's going to look the other way.
  • The Cracker: Peridot's role for the villains.
  • Dungeon Bypass:
    • When Peridot sets up a death trap at a factory, Sly opts to just head to an employee break room with Judy to figure out a better plan (actually to Troll her). Peridot then traps them inside, threatening them with death by starvation... only for Judy to point out the vending machines.
    • Nick, when he and Carmelita show up, decides to just cut the power.
  • Engineered Heroics: Scar noticed the media circus around Nick and Judy after the Night Howlers incident, so when the mayoral election came up, he hatched a plan to stage the theft and recovery of the Nope Diamond in order to use the publicity to win the election.
  • Everyone Knew Already: Nick spends a good portion of the fic trying to keep Carmelita from learning about his con-man past, only to find out that she had already learned of it when Peridot tries to use it against them. As Carmelita points out, it's not exactly a secret in Zootopia, where they're rather famous.
  • Exact Words:
    • There's only one police officer allowed to be a liaison to Carmelita, who requested Nick, but if Judy hangs around Nick when she's off-duty...
    • Scar, when questioned by Nick, says that he hasn't seen the hyenas in years when it'd been established that the only contact the gang had had with their boss was via phone.
  • Family-Friendly Firearms: Some ZPD officers (including Nick) are armed with paralyzing shock pistols similar to Carmelita’s, albeit weaker. Hers stands out by being so large and overpowered that Nick and Judy are amazed it’s legal.
  • Hit Them in the Pocketbook: Sly and company rob Scar blind, sabotage his insurance, and destroy his home by firing a subway train into it, all to make sure he can't buy his way out of criminal charges.
  • Idle Rich: It's noted that while Scar has a degree in law, he doesn't really do much with it, having seemingly gone to college just to keep himself busy. Nick even snarks that one of the most surprising things about his involvement in the plot is that he's doing anything at all.
  • Massive Multiplayer Crossover: While Zootopia and Sly Cooper are the main focuses, there are characters and elements from several other series as well, primarily Tai Lung, Peridot, Scar, and the hyena trio.
  • Obviously Evil: Scar.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname:
    • "Peridot's" real name is Dorothy Perrault, but she prefers the former, and so does the narration.
    • Even the media calls Scar "Scar".
  • Overshadowed by Awesome: Nick shows some insecurities about this, knowing he can't keep up with the likes of Judy, Sly or Carmelita in a fight. That said, he's also savvy enough to exploit this status. As Scar learns the hard way, being outshone makes it easy to forget that Nick had to pass the same training as Judy and can competently take on larger animals.
  • The Pardon: What Scar is offering his cohorts.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Stop Hitting Yourself: During the armored car robbery, Judy makes her entrance by kicking Tai Lung's arm so hard that his attempt to punch Sly is redirected to his own face.
  • There Was a Door: When Tai Lung tears the doors off of the armored truck with the Nope Diamond, Sly notes that he could have taken the key from the cops he had just beaten into a pulp.
  • When All You Have Is a Hammer…: Tai Lung tends to use his fists to get through obstacles, like the security in an armored van. He's really strong, so it's not ineffective, but the master thief in Sly dies a little when he punches through the container with the Nope Diamond in it.
  • You Called Me "X"; It Must Be Serious: Judy has figured out that Nick does this with her, likely not consciously. "Carrots" is fine, "Hopps" is a mild concern, and actually calling her "Judy" is code red.
