  • …But He Sounds Handsome: Played straight whenever Adrien talks about Cat Noir. Averted when Cat Noir talks about Adrien.
  • Call-Back: When Ladybug asks Cat Noir to tell her something nice, he says he had asparagus for dinner. Several chapters later, Marinette asks Adrien if he likes asparagus and lets it slip that one of her friends does as well, but refuses to tell him who leading him to believe that it's the guy she likes.

    • Almost everything Master Fu says in his tea tent qualifies.
    • Gabriel and Natalie also use this when discussing Pierre and Julien.
"What do you think, sir?" Natalie asked. "Is there any chance of Pierre getting akumatized?"
"Not likely." Mr. Agreste snorted. "I might have worried about Julien here, but it appears that you have calmed down."
  • Draw Aggro: Adrien does this to an akuma threatening Marinette by screaming her name in rage. His friends and classmates also try it to varying degrees of success, making it look like a viable tactic for diverting future akumas.
  • Eating the Eye Candy: Both Marinette and Adrien are guilty of this at different points throughout the story.

  • Friend of Masked Self: When Cat Noir realizes that Marinette must have seen Ladybug transform, Ladybug soothes him by replying she already knows Marinette is her Secret-Keeper. He then spends the rest of the plot trying to convince Ladybug and Marinette that he should be allowed to tell Adrien Agreste his secret, so they both have a civilian that can reach them.
  • Forgotten First Meeting: Adrien’s childhood friend is STRONGLY implied to be Marinette. Later confirmed by Julien.

"You're gonna wanna leave this room."
  • Glamour: Adrien suspects this why he can’t visualize Ladybug without her mask. Alya also makes the suggestion when she’s looking at Nathaniel’s drawing.
  • Hell Is That Noise: “Listen as the Quiet Man did and share in his pain.”
  • Hive Mind: The Liaison’s power
  • I Need to Go Iron My Dog: Marinette tells Adrien she forgot her textbook at school so she can get away from him during an akuma attack.
  • Inconvenient Attraction: Adrien for Marinette when he’s spent the better part of a week trying to figure out who he is supposed to be setting her up with.
  • "Just Joking" Justification: The Chemist turns out not to be akumatized.
  • Magpies as Portents: Master Fu, Alya, Marinette, and Adrien drink out of teacups that depict an old Nursery Rhyme about Magpies.
  • Oblivious to His Own Description: Adrien. Discussed and Justified by Plagg.
"Alright, alright, let's go over his description again. He is kind, smart, brave, likes asparagus, and he's been spending a lot of time with Marinette." Plagg tapped his mouth thoughtfully with one paw, "Wait! I've got it!"
    Adrien looked up hopefully.
    "It's you."
  • Oblivious to Love: As usual, Adrien to Marinette
  • Oh, Crap!: Cat Noir when the Mourner shakes off his attack by floating down his staff.

  • Parental Neglect: Gabriel’s neglect of Adrien is what nearly gets Marinette akumatized.
  • Portmanteau Couple Name: In Universe, one of Marinette's costumes is called: Lady Noir. She tells Natalie that this is what Alya calls the combination of Ladybug and Cat Noir.
  • Reminder Failure: Most, if not all, of Adrien’s mental notes are forgotten by the end of the scene.
  • Say My Name: Adrien screams Marinette's name when an akuma flies toward her in the chapter "The White Knight". The gesture is repeated by classmates and friends as the akuma goes after different people.
  • Secret Chaser: Alya finally confronts Adrien on her suspicions that he’s Cat Noir. Marinette shows her a picture of Adrien and Cat Noir standing together to change her mind.
  • Secret-Identity Identity: Cat Noir sees Adrien as a broken shell and Cat Noir as his true self.
  • Shipper on Deck: Happens multiple times for various characters, but the biggest offenders where Marinette and Adrien are concerned seem to be Alya, Luka, and Chris.
  • Shipper with an Agenda: Adrien, after discovering that Marinette is Ladybug’s Secret-Keeper, wants to set Marinette up with the guy she likes so she’ll trust him to be a Secret Keeper for Cat Noir. As the story continues, his priorities slowly shift closer to I Want My Beloved to Be Happy.
  • Single-Episode Handicap: The Mourner deafens both heroes in his chapter.
  • So Proud of You: Tom Dupain tells Cat Noir that Adrien is a good kid, and he knows Adrien’s parents must be proud of him.
  • Super Power Lottery: The Mourner can negate electrical lights, deafen people, and has selective Intangibility, plus a One-Hit Kill with his lily.
  • Sure, Let's Go with That: Adrien’s friends assume he is trying to figure out Cat Noir’s identity when he asks for Alya’s list. He doesn’t correct that impression.
  • Tough Love: Hawkmoth justifies his treatment of Adrien to himself as this.
If Adrien got use to disappointment, then it would be hard to find its peak.
  • You Are Not Alone: An overarching problem for Adrien is his loneliness. He combats it pretty well himself, but the people around him are constantly reaching out to him as well.
