Fanfic / Dodger And Company

Go To

An Oliver & Company fanfiction set after the events of the film. It was first written by DodgerNYC in 2012 and is divided into three parts.

The first installment involves Dodger falling out with the gang and going to live with Oliver. Fagin also finds himself in trouble with gangsters who were involved with Sykes, and Dodger meets his estranged mother Annie, who tries to build bridges with him.

The second installment picks up one year after the first; the gang are raising Annie's orphaned pups, while a war between two rival dogs gangs, the Kings and the Refugees, threatens to break out; this installment also introduces Dodger's childhood friends Charlie and Nancy.

The third and final installment details the gang war between the dogs, breaking out across Manhattan, as well as the aftermath.

An overriding theme of the story is Dodger's feelings of abandonment, due to growing up on the streets as a puppy, which is detailed in flashbacks.

Provides examples of:

  • Babies Ever After: Dodger and Nancy become parents to a litter of puppies; at the conclusion of the story, Oliver and the Foxworth's new cat Adena end up having a litter of kittens.
  • Bad People Abuse Animals: The gangsters who torture Fagin run an illegal dog-fighting ring; Ruscoe later lampshades this.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Mr. Foxworth gets this when he and the NYPD show up at the apartment to save Fagin from the gangsters.
  • Childhood Friend Romance: Dodger and Nancy fall in love and later have a litter of puppies.
  • Cool Old Guy: Mr. Foxworth, Jenny's father, is possibly in his mid-40s, but shows this after he and the NYPD take down the gangsters; he's also a fan of the Dodgers baseball team.
  • Daddy Had a Good Reason for Abandoning You: A female example; Annie abandoned Dodger to save him from Duke, and it clearly broke her heart.
  • Dark and Troubled Past:
    • Dodger was abandoned by his mother Annie, and spent time on the streets before Fagin took him in.
    • Annie's backstory is just as, if not more, tragic than her son's. Having lost most of her litter-except for Dodger-and having an abusive mate were the least of her problems.
  • Face Death with Dignity: After being fatally shot, Annie apologizes to Dodger for abandoning him before succumbing to her injuries.
  • From Nobody to Nightmare: Billy, Annie's youngest son, is taken under the wing of Dodger's enemy Skippy, and betrays the gang.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Mrs. Foxworth has blonde hair and is a caring, loving woman.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Annie takes a bullet intended for Dodger. Billy also saves Dodger from being run over at the cost of his own life.
  • Idiosyncratic Episode Naming: Each chapter title is that of a song by Billy Joel.
  • Jerkass:
    • Sykes's gangster friends are unpleasant individuals. Ruscoe, Roscoe's son, is a nasty piece of work, especially regarding his views on mixed-breed dogs.
    • Duke is also awful. His treatment of Annie alone more than qualifies.
  • Jerk Ass Has A Point:
    • While he did act like a giant dick towards her, Dodger wasn't wrong about Annie abandoning him on the streets when he was a puppy.
  • Jerkass Woobie: Dodger. While he is the same snarky and somewhat rude dog we met in the film, you can't help but feel sorry for him, especially with his tragic backstory.
