YMMV / Dodger And Company

Go To

  • Heartwarming Moments: Quite a few, but any time Dodger and Oliver have fun together, cementing their bond as "brothers"; also, Dodger making up with the gang following their fallout; it proves that they are a family, no matter what.
  • Complete Monster: Sykes' gangster friends, but particularly the leader, Stone. A cruel, violent bully, he terrorizes Fagin when he starts to fall behind on his rent at his apartment, and certainly isn't above physically attacking him, at one point for spitting on his expensive suit. He also runs an illegal dog-fighting ring and is perfectly happy with the idea of selling off most of the gang-including Dodger's half-siblings, who are just puppies-to the fights.
    • Ruscoe. The estranged son of Roscoe and leader of a dog gang called the Purebreds, he affects a smarmy, smug demeanor, and despises "half-breed" dogs; while he isn't so much upset that Dodger killed his father, he only wants to get revenge on him, purely for the sake of maintaining his image; he also leads a vicious gangland war between the street dogs, which ends in multiple injuries and deaths.
  • Moral Event Horizon: Stone, the leader of Sykes's gangster friends, crosses it after he attacks Fagin. His friend Moretti also crosses is after he fatally shoots Annie.
  • Nightmare Fuel: Sykes' gangster friends provide a ton of this, and much like their old friend, they certainly wouldn't think twice about hurting animals.
    • The war between the street dogs is particularly violent and graphic, and many dogs are injured and/or killed.
  • Shout-Out: At one point in the story, Dodger visits the Balto statue in Central Park.
  • Tear Jerker: Quite a few moments, but Dodger and Annie's respective stories especially. Ditto the scene where Dodger breaks down and reconciles with his fatally-injured mother.
  • Woobie: Where to even start with Annie? Her mate is abusive towards her, most of her pups die-except for Dodger-die shortly after birth, and she is forced to abandon Dodger when he's still a puppy in order to protect him from Duke. And things just snowball from there for her.
