Despicable Mayhem is a SMG4 fanfiction written by CVGW James. It’s his first original chaptered work on the web series that’s not a retelling of his arcs.

Chaos spreads in the Mushroom Kingdom when people have their prized possessions either stolen from them or meddled with. First Mario finds his precious spaghetti missing, and Melony can’t find Inkweaver… but Swagmaster’s tank getting inked may be the final nail in the coffin, as it prompts him to declare war on Inklings, believing them to be responsible. Who’s doing all of this to their stuff? And why would they do this?

You can read the story on FanFiction.Net here, or on DeviantArt here.

Despicable Mayhem contains examples of:

  • Adaptational Karma: Of the Offscreen Karma variety. SMG3 mentions Lawyer Kong getting beat up by ninjas following his defeat in the Lawsuit Arc, something that doesn’t happen in the original.
  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: SMG3 gets hacked in Chapter 5, and the culprit was seemingly SMG4, someone he trusted. The worst part of it for him? It happened while he was streaming.
  • Author Avatar: Swagmaster, to an extent. His complaining in the second chapter that he doesn’t have a redesign was meant to reflect the author feeling for quite some time that Swag and Chris should get a redesign.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Inverted with Waluigi, who’s the little brother, but Wario getting hurt in Chapter 3 pushes him to unleash his Rejection Move and go into a Roaring Rampage of Revenge in Chapter 4.
  • Call-Back:
    • It wouldn’t be an SMG4 fanfic without a reference to one of his most popular videos; in this case, Mario gets his PINGAS stuck in a refrigerator door in the first chapter.
    • Chapter 2 mentions Francis stealing Axol's Inkweaver in the Anime Arcas well as Peach's Castle being destroyed SMG4 Movie: IT’S GOTTA BE PERFECT.
    • Upon being hacked in Chapter 5, SMG3 exclaims "what the bingus?"
    • What keeps SMG4 and 3 from turning on each other after getting hacked is them remembering their battle with Zero in the Cosmology Saga.
  • The Cameo: Stan Lee makes a cameo in Chapter 4.
  • Crossover: With Despicable Me, obviously, in case the title and cover art didn’t give it away.
  • Mood Whiplash: Chapter 3 opens with a lighthearted day in the Mushroom Kingdom. There is some conflict between Waluigi and Peppino, but it’s resolved rather quickly. Then Mario accuses Wario of stealing his spaghetti, and things quickly escalate from there. Not to mention the impending war started by Swag in the previous chapter…
  • Not Me This Time: Wario is accused of stealing Mario’s spaghetti in Chapter 3, when as he tries to explain, money is more what he’s after.
  • Original Character: So far, two characters created by the author appear in this story: Melony’s new boyfriend Jaxl, and notorious hacker Karlos S. Zepelkin (aka KongScumZelus).
  • Revenge Before Reason: Despite knowing full well that Mario’s the universe’s avatar, and that it will die if he does, Waluigi still tries to kill him.
  • Second Episode Introduction: Jaxl, an Original Character by the author, makes his first appearance in the story’s second chapter (albeit a nonphysical appearance as he texts with Melony).
  • Second Love: Jaxl, a character the author created and who appeared in some of his past works, serves as this for Melony.
  • Serious Business: Naturally, Mario’s first instinct upon realizing his spaghetti is missing is to freak out. Hilariously enough, Luigi does so as well, even though he’s usually depicted as the smarter and more rational brother of the two.
  • Shout-Out:
    • The story begins with a nod to the "good morning, city" scene from The LEGO Movie.
    • Naturally, False Vegeta says his famous "over 9,000" line in Chapter 6. Twice, actually.
  • Villain Team-Up: Dr. Cortex and Dr. Pootis team up to steal Inkweaver in Chapter 6. Well, technically speaking, Inkweaver was given to them.
