"A Girl of the Night's Watch" is a Game of Thrones fanfic written by reallybadwriter2000.

Caitriona Norrey is a Northern lady who shuns the usual courtly behaviors. But when her father Lord Norrey forces a betrothal on her, she runs away to the Night's Watch... as dark forces cloud over Westeros.

Tropes that appear in this fanfic:

  • Adaptational Early Appearance: The author deliberately introduces Karl Tanner a season early to build him up as a character before he takes over Craster's Keep.
  • Adaptation Expansion: The story expands on Karl's takeover of Craster's Keep and Edd and Grenn's imprisonment there (along with Caitie).
  • Ambition Is Evil: Lord Norrey seems to care only for his own status.
  • Arranged Marriage: Lord Norrey betrothed Caitriona to a Hightower. Hightower was a Jerkass, so that's why Caitriona ran away to the Night's Watch.
  • Cyanide Pill: Caitie took a vial of poison from Maester Aemon to avoid being raped by the mutineers. Jon winds up using it on another Ranger as a Mercy Kill.
  • Decomposite Character: Karl Tanner from the show is the composite of some Night's Watch mutineers from the books, such as the name of Clubfoot Karl, the plan to take over Craster's Keep from Chett, and the actual role of killing Craster from Dirk. The last of these, Dirk, is made into his own character here, who is personally responsible for guarding and feeding the prisoners.
  • Does Not Like Spam: If there's a food Caitriona doesn't like, it's cabbage.
  • Dual Wielding: Caitriona's main weapons are a pair of knives. She loses her first pair in the mutiny at Craster's Keep and gets a second pair, which she names Owen and Cerys for her brothers.
  • Gutted Like a Fish: Caitie threatens to gut Rast if he doesn't shut up.
"If you don't shut your fucking mouth right now, I swear to all the Gods I will slit you from navel to nose."
  • In-Series Nickname: Caitriona is typically referred to as Caitie.
  • Jerkass to One: Lord Norrey is of the Crueler to One variety; he is described as being generally unpleasant, and especially towards his children, but most of all towards his youngest son Arthur.
  • Killed Offscreen: Caitriona's two eldest brothers Owen and Cerys were killed at the Red Wedding.
  • Leave Behind a Pistol: With Jon's permission, Caitie gives her father the option of taking his own life with poison. He takes it.
  • Mercy Kill: Jon poisons a mortally wounded Bedryck after the skirmish at Craster's Keep.
  • Missing Mom: Lady Norrey died six years before the start of the story, giving birth to her son Arthur.
  • Runaway Bride: Caitriona ran away from home to avoid a betrothal to an unpleasant lord.
  • Shout-Out: Caitriona sings an English translation of "Noble Maiden Fair" from Brave to soothe Gilly's son.
  • The Starscream: Lord Norrey admits he joined Ramsay just so he could take the reins of the North once he slipped up and somebody killed him.
  • Sweet Polly Oliver: Caitriona disguises herself as a boy named Caitie and runs away to the Night's Watch.
  • Sweet Tooth: Caitriona has a liking for sweets, which is how her older brothers persuade her to join her father at a feast in the prologue.
  • Time Skip: The first chapter takes place two years before the rest of the story.
  • Unfriendly Fire: Caitie suggests killing Locke to prevent him finding out about Bran and Rickon. It winds up being a moot point because Locke knows anyways thanks to Ramsay telling him and gets killed by Bran.
