Fanfic / The Golden Quiche

Go To

"SO," he began, "FRISK IS PROBABLY MAYBE APPARENTLY LIKE AN ABANDONED QUICHE. EACH OF THIS 'FOSTER FAMILY' TOOK CARE OF THE QUICHE UNTIL THEY FULFILLED THEIR QUOTA, AND THEN PASSED THEM TO A DIFFERENT PERSON."
"NO ONE THOUGHT THEY WERE SPECIAL. THEN ONE DAY THEY FELL INTO THE UNDERGROUND. THROUGH THE SUPER AWESOME POWER OF FRIENDSHIP, THE QUICHE SAVED ALL OF MONSTERKIND!"
"SUDDENLY THEY'RE A VERY, VERY, VEEEERY IMPORTANT SPECIAL FRIEND. THEY HAD BECOME EXTRA SHINY. A GOLDEN QUICHE! AND EVERYONE KNOWS HUMANS HAVE A STRANGE OBSESSION WITH SHINY YELLOW THINGS. NOW EVERYONE WANTS TO CLAIM FRISK AS THEIR OWN, BE IT THROUGH TRICKERY OR FORCE."
Papyrus

The Golden Quiche is an Undertale fanfic written by Sophtopus.

Set after a pacifist run, Frisk has become a celebrity after liberating the Underground and becoming the monsters' ambassador. But life has not been easy either to them or the monsters of Ebbot. Things evolved from a deceptively simple custody war to a hidden global socio-historical conflict. Whatever Frisk decides today could change the face of the world tomorrow.

Frisk now stands in the middle of a series of events threatening to spiral out of control. What will they do when someone even more determined than them stands in their way?

It can be read on Archive of Our Own. A Fanfiction.net mirror is located here. An spin-off fic called The Magus Compendium describing more of the universe lore can be read here or here. But beware that it contains spoilers from the main story.

This fanfic provides examples of:

  • Badass Longcoat: Cenna Caraway sports a trenchcoat and a fedora hat as her winter wear. However, her behaviour is nothing like the hardboiled detectives of that iconic fashion.
  • Break the Cutie: Zigzagged, but ultimately Defied by Papyrus, who manages to retain his optimistic outlook despite losing some of his naivety.
  • Character Development: While applicable to other characters, Papyrus is probably the one who have developed the most through the story.
  • Dying Smirk: Gaster smirks to Sans as he turned into stone with his characteristic distorted grin. Laughing at him and knowing that there was still someone capable of stopping him and his plans. And that one is no other than Papyrus.
  • Extreme Omnivore: Gaelic. Whenever he's hungry, you better not be near him. He tried to eat both Undyne and Sans on separate occasions, and even mentions that he ate a human once before.
  • Fantastic Racism: And how. The lack of proper communication between Humans and Monsters led to a breakdown that almost wiped out Monsterkind. Once the 'creatures' were sealed under Mount Ebott, Magic-users became the next target. Those who were condemned as witches and warlocks were burned to death as divine punishment.
  • Flesh Golem: The giant Amalgamate hidden under the ocean that is shown to be controlled by the Persona in Sans' vision.
  • Flying Car: Papyrus likes to turn normal ones into these by levitating them with his magic.
  • The Gadfly: Frisk, who is keeping their gender a secret for the soul purpose of it being a surprise when they grow older.
  • "Groundhog Day" Loop: Early chapters indicates that the world hasn't passed a whole year without a hiccup for a long while. This is taken up a notch when the Magi attempts to exorcise Chara out of Frisk. Poor kid kept dying.
  • Mental Time Travel: Unless the state of the body is preserved, all time travel is just a transference of the mind.
  • Humans Are Special: A human's physical body allows them to store higher levels of 'Determination'. Also, their coloured SOULS are the result of trait imbalances that's reminiscent of basic colour theory.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: A possible interpretation to why Sans is letting Toriel and Asgore rekindle their marriage.
  • Mage Tower: The Magus Association HQ a.k.a "The Institute" includes one nicknamed "The Spire".
  • Magic A Is Magic A: The colors of a SOUL (or Psychia as known on the Surface) determines the type of magic a person is capable of. It's detailed enough to warrant its own lorebook.
  • The Magocracy: The Magus Association has enough government recognition to own a massive headquarters, complete with schools and research facilities. They also have some level of global political influence.
  • Named After Somebody Famous: Mezil Thymenote .
  • The Necrocracy: The Red Sage stayed on the Surface to further develop the Magus Association, making him the Necrocracy of the Magocracy.
  • Older Than They Look: Frisk. Due to excessive time traveling loops, their mind matured way ahead of their body. By the time Golden Quiche plays out, they have the mental age of a twenty-plus-year-old inside a child's body.
  • Our Liches Are Different:
    • The process of creating the first-generation skeletons is reminiscent of android/cyborg productionnote . Humans with magical potential who're converted at near-death or from a fresh corpse keep their SOUL'S colour as "Liches". This unlocks the fullest potential of their type.
    • Their descendants inherit their skeletal form and a fraction of their power. Those who had at least one Lich in their ancestry are called "Lichborn". The mixture of human traits with magic resulted in a unique branch of spacetime powers that are exclusive to Lichborn. They manifest in the form of a coloured, flaming "Seer's Eye". Some are born with two.
  • Our Ghosts Are Different: Ghosts are essences of humans who refuse to pass on despite the dissipation of their SOULS. Since they no longer have the Love and Compassion as a guide, these beings often succumb to resentment. Which brings to...
  • Our Demons Are Different: ...DEMONS. They're the short-form of Determination Monsters fuelled by the sheer will to keep existing on the wrong side of reality. Living Victories who lose their conscience become these as well.
  • Our Time Travel Is Different: RESETS, SAVES, and LOADS. And also the story's key plot. Matured Red SOULS become Living Victories. In turn, only the most 'Determined' Living Victory gains the ability to rewind time at a cosmic scale. Said ability is appropriately dubbed as 'The Keys of Fate'. If there are two or more Reds with close levels of Determination and they cannot achieve a peaceful resolution, it devolves into a time-travelling war.
  • Personality Powers: It's possible to estimate a person's personality by examining the magic they use. Ex. Cenna Caraway is a Yellow (Justice) Major with Green (Kindness) and Purple (Perseverance) Minors. This results in a person with a strong sense of justice and a dogged grit, but kind enough to give repented criminals a second chance.
  • Save Scumming: Magic of the Red SOULS. Expect it to be weaponized in combat. Mezil does this to Flowey and Flower!Chara with a card game to test their memory retention.
  • Supreme Chef: Sans and Papyrus' parents were famously known to be this while they were still around. Gaster is also a very capable chef. In part thanks to his good use of applied science skills into cooking and because he is also amalgamated with the two. Under Gaster's watch, Papyrus finally learned to be a good cooker and left his old days of bad spaghetti with Undyne behind.
  • Set Right What Once Went Wrong: The story.
  • Sudden Game Interface: Played with. In the human world, the battle screen turns out to be metaphorical — a shared mental state at best. Surprisingly, the SAVE screen is quite solid and reachable when Frisk pulls Sans in.
  • Rule of Seven: The Magus Association was founded by 'The Seven Sages'. Each Sage governs a SOUL colour of their speciality, and they taught the first Seven Magi of the Humans. They consist of one Red Lich and six Pure-Eyed Lichborn. In other words, all SOUL magic descended from the teachings of monsters themselves.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Papyrus after his Training from Hell with Mezil and Gaster to help them defeat Chara. Even Undyne is envious and speechless of her old Royal Guard subordinate's new level of skill.
  • Wham Episode: Chapter 95, where Sans stabs Gaster, draining his Determination and turning him into stone.
  • What Measure Is a Non-Human?: The traditional Gungnir consider those without Determination unfit to live and ripe for slaughter. The Magi, on the other hand, insists that Monsters and Humans are fundamentally the same because both have Love and Compassion as the basic building blocks of their SOULS. Then we have the anti-magic extremists who think that magic is a source of superlative danger.
