Fanfic / Teen Titans: Ascension

Go To

Teen Titans: Ascension is a trilogy of fanfics written by CyberWraith9. Avatar is a "what if" Teen Titans fanfic based around the idea of Robin gaining superpowers. The sequels, Adaptation and Absolution are about the aftermath. It can be found on Fanfiction.net.

Not to be confused with the film Avatar, or the series Avatar: The Last Airbender. For the list of fanfics of the latter franchise, see here.

This series contains examples of:

  • Amnesiac Hero: Tek. She has biological armor built into her back, and no idea where she came from. Everyone resorts to calling her Ally Girl (Allie), until Beast Boy names her Tek.
  • Amnesiacs are Innocent: Tek. For awhile at least.
  • Battle Couple: Jason and Queenie. Possibly Robin and Starfire
  • Big Eater: Cyborg, naturally.
Cyborg: "Eight pounds of hamburger, two pounds of potato salad, three watermelons and two bags of chips...Sarah?"
    Sarah SIM: "Yes, Cyborg?"
Cyborg: "Get me my rib bib. I've got some serious work to do."
  • Becoming the Mask: Robin's reason for never removing his mask around people.
  • Break the Cutie: Beastboy and Starfire
    • Just about everyone on the team is broken, physically or mentally by the end of Avatar.
  • Broken Bird: Beastboy looks like he could be heading this way by Absolution.
  • Catapult Nightmare: Robin has one in Avatar.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: Bushido makes a reappearence in Adaptation.
    • Those two kids Cyborg and Raven meet at the bookstore? They make a re-appearence in Absolution.
  • Cool Sword: Bushido's. It apparently contains the souls of the previous wielders of the sword. It also cuts through almost anything, and generates a magical shield.
    • Possibly overlaps with Empathic Weapon
  • Crazy-Prepared: Much like Batman and his anti-Justice League protocols, Robin had every avenue covered concerning who might've been Slade's new Apprentice, even Starfire. Safe to say, she and the rest of the Titans were less than enthused at his logic.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Almost everyone gets in a little snarking at some point.
    • Raven obviously
    • Bushido is especially good at this.
  • Death Is Cheap: For Cyborg at least.
  • Door Stopper: Definitely by fanfic standards, and likely if it was published professionally.
  • Double Agent: In "Absolution", Terra is forced into this role after Robin immediately and accurately deduces her role as Immortus' mole following their seemingly easy escape from Olympus.
  • Drugs Are Bad: Zig-zagged with Tek. Initially, the only real way for Tek to keep her "monster" at bay was being tranquilized and sedated, meaning she'd have to be kept cooped up in the tower. Come the war against Slade, this comes back to bite her and Cyborg when she forcibly injects herself, taking herself out of the fight after Cyborg ended up shutting down after taking out Ternion/Triple Threat (thankfully, the Slade drones shut down around that time as well). It's the main reason Cyborg initially considers taking her off the team in "Adaptation" until they find pills which can help keep her demons at bay while keeping her in a lucid enough state to fight.
  • Enemy Mine: The Teen Titans team up with the Teen Tyrants to stop the end of the world.
  • Expressive Mask: Robin's. It is (kind of) explained in the first chapter of Avatar.
  • Goldfish Poop Gang: The Teen Tyrants. Depending on which part of the story your reading they could be a Terrible Trio.
  • Intercontinuity Crossover: The fanfic ties in the animated Teen Titans series, the DC Animated Universe canon, and transitions into the comic book adaptation of the Teen Titans rather smoothly without missing much of a beat, including the revelation of Tek as a side project of Cadmus and Speedy's eventual "graduation" to the Justice League.
  • Koan: Bushido is especially fond of using these.
  • Long Runner: At least as far as fanfics go. It's been around for three years. It has three stories, with the first two being complete. They are forty chapters long each.
    • The chapters are also very long.
  • Mama Bear: Queenie
  • New Powers as the Plot Demands: Robin does this basically throughout all of Avatar.
  • Never Found the Body: Slade.
  • Papa Wolf: Jason comes off as this
  • Preemptive "Shut Up".
    Raven: Tek, Beastboy. Shut up
    Beastboy: But I didn't
    Raven: You were about to.
Beastboy: Okay I have to give you that one...'
  • Sadistic Choice: Near the end of "Avatar", Raven only has enough energy to heal either Robin, who had the alien symbiote blasted out of his chest, or Starfire, who used up all of her energy blasting said symbiote out of Robin. She ends up healing Robin and it takes her until the latter half of "Adaptation" to understand and admit that she made the right choice.
    • Terra's faced with a three-pronged version in "Absolution" after Robin immediately deduces she's acting as The Mole for Immortus: Go back to Immortus and admit she was found out (which will her get her killed), admit to Kori and Gar that she's The Mole again (which will likely see her get mauled and/or killed), or act as a Double Agent and report everything that Robin wants Immortus and the Brotherhood to know and, in Robin's words, "just might live long enough to wish she were dead." She takes the third choice.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: In "Absolution", after discovering Bushido after his seppuku and watching Robin enlist Terra, a traitor, and Rose, Slade's own daughter, into the Titans' ranks, Tek essentially tells Robin to go screw himself and sets off to find Victor/Cyberion.
  • Ship Tease
  • Super-Senses: Deconstructed with Beast Boy, who gains these after his "Beast" metamorphosis. He can literally smell and hear everything in the city for miles on end, the rushing water, the honking of cars, even what his teammates had for breakfast the other day, but the problem for him is being able to turn them off. Thankfully, Raven understands his situation (not all unlike hers, except without the years of developing psychic blocks) and helps him to meditate and cope with the changes.
    • Sadly, it becomes Raven's undoing in keeping her "time" with Dominic a secret when Gar enters the room during the Titans' BBQ and the first thing to hit his senses was..well..
    • Makes for something of a Brick Joke when Robin and Starfire (after Robin "fulfilled" Starfire's in-heat needs) arrive at the ward for Raven's birthing and Beast Boy, having been at Raven's bedside, immediately catches whiff of their time together, but decides it's not the best time to point it out.
  • The Chains of Commanding: By Absolution it's hit Robin very hard.
  • The Stoic: Both Bushido and Raven.
    • Robin becomes this in Avatar
  • Wham Line: From "Absolution": "It is a magnificent sword, is it not?" Bushido said.
  • Wild Card / Token Evil Teammate: Magnum flip-flops on this role for the Streetbeat, and it's something Jason's well aware of, knowing that as long as Mag's brother Stripwire is around, Magnum will always have a reason to remain a Streetbeat. Otherwise, he'll immediately jump at the best offer to come his way
