Tropes featured in Bart Simpson: Attorney at Law include:

  • The Ace: Bart Simpson at 27: a rich, successful, and handsome lawyer. Meeting another ace, an attorney named Frank Gelwood, while he was still ten was what begun his transformation. He quickly switches into Broken Ace due to the stress of his ex-girlfriends returning to his life.
  • Amoral Attorney: Averted with Bart, who is actually a very moral attorney, an image Jessica wishes to shatter by pretending Bart sexually harassed her. Played straight with the Blue-Haired Lawyer (named Gweeble in this story) who acts as Jessica's attorney with her bogus sexual harassment suit, and uses Bart's bad boy past to wreck his reputation.
  • Bait-and-Switch Comment: Upon learning Moe is placing bets on the outcome of Bart's trial, Homer places two firm fists against his hips and says he'll "give that bookie the talking of a life-time". He then phones Moe to "Put me down fifty on the boy."
  • Berserk Button:
    • Any woman trying to get into a relationship with Bart is this for Jessica Lovejoy.
    • Hurting Alex is one for Bart. He personally went after Jeremy for punching Alex, and even threatened to kill Burns in public after the old man claimed he would ruin Alex's boutique.
    • Hitting on Bart or hurting him becomes one for Alex.
  • Big Brother Instinct/Big Sister Instinct: 17 years into the future, the Simpson siblings are close knit and don't take kindly to those threatening them.
    • Maggie is the younger sister, but she doesn't appreciate Jessica gloating about sleeping with Bart.
    • Lisa is not happy with Bart having anything to do with Jessica Lovejoy.
    • Lisa yanked Burns' by the collar and yelled at him when he initially refused to make a life-saving blood donation for Bart.
    • Bart was not happy when Jeremy involved Maggie into his blackmailing scheme.
  • Big Bad: Jessica Lovejoy in the first part of the story, Jeremy in the second part, and Burns in the third part.
  • Blackmail: Alex performed this on behalf of Jeremy, seducing married men so he could extort them. He makes demands to Maggie, forcing him to steal $700,000 from Bart in exchange for not revealing Alex's past to him and the press.
  • The Bus Came Back: Gina Vendetti, Alex Whitney, Jessica Lovejoy, Samantha Stankey, Greta Wolfcastle, and Laura Powers.
  • Butt-Monkey: Alex was very badly bullied as a teenager because of her love of fashion, especially by Gina and Bart's friends. Bart however, never bullied her but pulled an incredibly cruel prank on Alex by drunkenly proclaiming his love for her, then made out in front of Gina.
  • Dark and Troubled Past:
    • Gina has one tall pile of dirty laundry, which only grows over the course of the story.
    • Alex, for the work she did on behalf of Jeremy.
  • The Dragon: Gina becomes one to Jessica, after due to springing her from jail.
  • Drowning My Sorrows: After Gina cheated on him, Bart was reduced to the bottle, and nearly Driven to Suicide. Being seduced by Jessica and Gina contacting him drives him back to the bottle, forcing an intervention by Alex and Milhouse.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: Bart and Alex must overcome past demons and current enemies before they can get their happily ever after.
  • Easily Forgiven: Played straight with Maggie, who idolizes Gina and forgives her the grief she caused the family. Averted with and the rest of the Simpsons family, especially Bart for whom Gina's return is causing him enormous stress.
  • Epic Fail: Homer attempts to cover up a statute meant for Humphrey Bogart he buried with grass seed. He planted bird seed covering his house with a flock.
  • The Fashionista: Alex naturally made the transition to this from fashion obsessed girl. In high school, she fought for the right to wear her own revealing outfits. She returned to Springfield to open her own boutique.
  • Happily Married: Samantha and Milhouse. Samantha even gives birth to Milhouse's child while on the run from Burns.
  • Heel–Face Revolving Door: Gina has been going through this revolving door much of her life with Bart: she ended up cheating on Bart, which drove him to the bottle. She later returned to Bart, only to set fire to his car because he canceled a dinner. Bart negotiated for her go on parole and get counseling, only for her smash her employer's windshield. She again returns to Springfield, claiming to have changed, only to aid Jessica in kidnapping, and later locked up for armed robbery. She finally moves away from heel after Maggie helps her out of jail, and proves to be the smoking gun in the case against Jessica.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: Teenage Maggie, to an extent. Her idolization of Gina makes her ignore the damage she's done to Bart and the rest the Simpson family.
  • Laser-Guided Karma:
    • Kent tries to expose Alex's past as a whore and an extortionist. Someone at the studio took offense to that, so Kent's own time with a transgender prostitute is shown on the air for all to see.
    • Jeremy gets a glorious No-Holds-Barred Beatdown after shooting Bart, and now will spend a long time in jail.
  • Not What It Looks Like: Lisa finds Bart and Alex sleeping in bed together. She had been spending the night in Bart's bed. Bart, on a drunken binge, returned to his bed not knowing Alex was sleeping there. The breakfast that morning is very uncomfortable.
  • Parental Substitute: Marge, and to a lesser extent Homer, became surrogate parents to Alex who was very distant from her own parents. Marge pretty much tells her she was already a Simpson, which is only solidified when Alex and Bart are officially married.
  • Second Love: Alex Whitney for Bart.
  • Secretly Wealthy: Nelson made a fortune from an internet business but keeps a low profile to preserve his street cred.
  • She Is All Grown Up: Lisa, Jessica, Gina, and Maggie are described as having grown into very appealing young ladies.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: Gender-inverted. Alex's concern for Bart and her wholesome image make Bart fall for her.
  • Sympathetic Criminal: Alex worked for Jeremy because she was poor and homeless in LA. Jeremy, however, is not.
  • Stalker with a Crush: Jessica for Bart. She engages in the usual stalker behavior: harassing Bart's friends and co-workers to find out where he is, yanking him by his tie, believing she is entitled to her, harassing prospective love interests. Turns into a complete Yandere when she has him kidnapped by the mafia, and drugged into saying a marriage vow.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: Mr. Burns refuses to donate blood to Bart after he is nearly killed by Jeremy, despite Bart donating his blood to Burns. He only agrees after Lisa insults him and yanks him by the collar, and continues to antagonize Bart and later tries to kill him.
  • What the Hell, Hero?:
    • Bart gets this from Lisa for sleeping with Jessica Lovejoy.
    • Maggie gets this from Bart and Marge for trying to bring Gina back into the family.
  • Worthy Opponent: Bart does acknowledge the skill of the Blue-Haired Lawyer, while still finding him to be a horrible human being.
