"The most irritating thing is when people assume that because you have a large bosom, you're going to be vapid and silly. I fail to see what glands have got to do with brains."

Madeline Smith, (2 August 1949), is a British actress best known for appearing in comedy and horror films in The '70s and The '80s.

Her first film role was in Escalation. Two years later, she did her first work for Hammer Horror in Taste the Blood of Dracula, credited as "Maddy Smith". Other films she did for Hammer were The Vampire Lovers and Frankenstein and the Monster from Hell. In 1971, she appeared in Up Pompeii (the film version of the TV series). The star of the film, Frankie Howerd, hoped for her to return in the sequel, Up the Chastity Belt, but she was unavailable. She did however return for the third and final film, Up the Front.

In 1972, she had one scene in Carry On Matron and proved popular with the Carry On team; they wanted her to return in the next in the series, Carry On Abroad, but (like with Chastity Belt) she proved to be unavailable, and so Sid James got his Bless This House co-star Sally Geeson to fill the role of Lily Dickey. Smith also played a Bond Girl - Miss Caruso in the first scene of Live and Let Die, being recommended for the role by Roger Moore, who had done a scene with her in an episode of The Persuaders!.

On TV, Smith made appearances in five episodes of Doctor at Large, eight episodes of The Two Ronnies, an episode of The Howerd Confessions (reuniting her with Frankie), and two episodes of All Creatures Great and Small (1978) as two different characters. Smith gave birth to a daughter, Emily, in 1984, and so began to take fewer acting jobs to care for her. This lasted until 2011, when she appeared in an episode of Doctors. In 2019, she lent her voice to an audio play to celebrate fifty years of Up Pompeii.

Tropes & Trivia in her works:

  • Ms. Fanservice: In her prime, she was quite well-endowed:
"I found myself typecast: I was a couple of breasts with a face above them and a squeaky voice. Everyone thought I was brainless, and I was stuck with that image for the rest of my career".
  • Typecasting: As a Ms. Fanservice, as she put it herself in the above quote.
