Kurwin the Flayer

The main "antagonist" of the story, Kurwin's an aging pirate who wishes to conquer all of Mossflower while keeping what's left of his crew intact.

  • Anti-Villain: In stark contrast to Urthquake. Kurwin isn't shy about admitting he's a cold-blooded murderer, or that he leads a crew of killers, rapists and thieves. But he's also A Father to His Men, Affably Evil (at times), and his main motivation for conquering Mossflower is that he feels like his race has suffered from Fantastic Racism for much too long.
  • Determinator: Even though he knows what he's doing will probably send him to the grave, Kurwin refuses to give up on his task of taking over Mossflower, and will do whatever's necessary until the forest is under vermin control.
  • Flaying Alive: How Kurwin earned his title.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He's not the nicest creature around, but he cares deeply for his crew and tries to help them whenever he can.
  • Manipulative Bastard: He manages to manipulate Fleckle Mard into poisoning Ferrin Rord just by talking to him and pointing out how much Rord mistreats him.
  • You Need a Breath Mint: Longfang bluntly tells Kurwin his breath smells like "fish guts simmering in rat shit" in chapter 13. Kurwin casually remarks that he better get used to the smell, since he doesn't like bathing or brushing his teeth.

Traegar "Trae" Rigglo

Kurwin's first mate and most trusted ally.

Stinkfoot

  • Affably Evil: One of the nicest, more pacifistic characters in Kurwin's crew.
  • Interrupted Suicide: Reveals in chapter 12 that, having lost his sanity and been alone for so long, he swam out into the ocean to drown himself. He was later rescued by Kurwin's crew before he died.
  • Kick The Son Of A Bitch: Beats the snot out of Dirtfoot after he talks disgracefully about Ishlin after he died.
  • Nice Guy: A very friendly pirate and easy to get along with.

Dirtfoot

  • Jerkass: He's a very smug, narrow-minded rat who frequently insults others and instigates when he knows he shouldn't.
  • Smug Snake: He runs his mouth and acts like he's better than Kurwin, but he never follows through on his words.
  • Speak Ill of the Dead: When Stinkfoot says they should remember Ishlin for who he was, Dirtfoot jokes that everyone should start drinking until they're covered in their own vomit and urine. Stinkfoot promptly beats the shit out of him.
  • The Starscream: He and Muslar are working behind Kuriwn's back and attempting to start a mutiny.
  • You Dirty Rat!: One of the most despicable rodents in Kurwin's crew.

Slizzo "Dead-Eye"

  • Death by Irony: His name is "Dead-Eye" because he wears an eyepatch over his left eye. His death involves an arrow going through his right eye, which makes his nickname even more relevant.
  • Eye Scream: Get an arrow shot through his right eye.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: With his best friend and cabin mate Longfang.
  • Mauve Shirt: A minor background character who had a few lines, but didn't play a huge role in the story.
  • Sacrificial Lamb: He's the first named recurring character in the story to bite it, further establishing the fanfic's Anyone Can Die theme and activating Longfang's Character Development.
  • You Need a Breath Mint: Several characters openly poke fun at how much Dead-Eye's breath stinks.

Longfang

  • Bury Your Gays: Chapter 13 confirms that he's homosexual, and he also ends up dying at the end of said chapter.
  • A Death in the Limelight: Chapter 13 explains how he joined Kurwin's crew, his relationship with Dead-Eye, and his struggles with living with the sins he's committed. Then he dies at the end, right after his backstory is revealed.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: With his best friend and cabin mate Dead-Eye.
  • Sacrificial Lion: The first major character in the series to die. What made his death so jarring was that the story was building up his character to make it seem like he'd play an important role in the series.
  • Straight Gay: He's homosexual, but he's not effeminate or promiscuous.

Blowhorn

  • Affably Evil: Is a friendly, albeit disgusting and smelly rat.
  • Gasshole: He enjoys passing gas and annoying his fellow pirates with his flatulence.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Chapter 15 has him and Razzik having a reflecting conversation with each other, where Blowhorn fears that no one will remember him when he dies. Up until then, he was just a rodent who joked a lot and indulged in Toilet Humour.
  • Plucky Comic Relief: He's the main source of humor for Kurwin's subplot, and he always appears to lighten up the mood (or to disgust others).
  • Potty Failure: He shits himself (twice) in chapter 12, and has mentioned throughout the story that he's not shy about soiling his trousers.
  • You Dirty Rat!: Averted. While he is literally a smelly, filthy rat, he and Razzik are much nicer than the other rodents in Kurwin's crew.
