     Ethan Wate
The main protagonist of the series. Ethan meets Lena Duchannes at the beginning of the series, discovers the Caster world and becomes involved in it.
  • Bookworm: Likes to read books that he keeps hidden under his bed.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Gives one to Lena in Beautiful Darkness, when she causes an incident at the Gatlin fair that makes one of his Great-Aunts collapse.

     Lena Duchannes
A powerful teenage Caster who is cursed to Turn either Light or Dark on her sixteenth birthday. She shares a special bond with Ethan Wate.
  • Berserk Button: She will not tolerate anyone insulting her uncle Macon.
  • Break His Heart to Save Him: What she does to Ethan in Beautiful Darkness. Because she believes she is turning Dark and that she will end up killing Ethan if they stay together, she breaks up with him and pretends that she doesn't love him anymore. It's only when Amma tells Ethan the truth near the end of Beautiful Darkness that Ethan realises that Lena did it to protect him from herself.
  • Broken Bird: Becomes this in Beautiful Darkness, as she is guilt-ridden and broken after accidentally causing her uncle's death.
  • Cute Witch: Lena is a pretty good-looking Caster.
  • Heroic BSoD: Has a huge one after she resurrects Ethan using the Book of Moons and accidentally kills her uncle in the process.
  • Kill It with Fire: Uses her ability to manipulate fire to burn Sarafine to death in Beautiful Chaos.
  • Parental Abandonment: Lena's mother disappeared when Lena was a baby; Lena's father died at around the same time.
  • Playing with Fire: Manipulates fire during the Beautiful Creatures climax to create a barrier between herself and Sarafine, to give Ethan and Link time to get help from Lena's family in Ravenwood. She also uses it again in Beautiful Chaos, this time in a very lethal fashion.
  • Sadistic Choice: One is offered to Lena near the climax of the first book. Choose the Light, and every Dark Caster in the family dies, never to harm anyone ever again — but Macon will die as well, and Lena will never be able to have a physical relationship with Ethan. Choose the Dark, and every Light Caster in the family dies — but Macon will survive, and Lena will be given the means to be together with Ethan physically and emotionally.
  • Self-Made Orphan: Becomes this when she burns her biological mother to death in Beautiful Chaos.
  • Take a Third Option: Lena becoming both Light and Dark at the end of the second book. This ends up destroying the World Order.
  • Unwitting Pawn: Travels with John Breed to the Great Barrier in Beautiful Darkness without any inkling that he is leading her into a trap set by her evil mother and Abraham Ravenwood.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Is on the receiving end of a few of these by Ethan in Beautiful Darkness, after she starts becoming closer to John Breed and Ridley and takes part in some of their more cruel activities.

     Link

     Ridley Duchannes
  • Heroic BSoD: Has a brief one after Sarafine turns her into a Mortal in Beautiful Darkness.
  • High-Heel–Face Turn: Ridley as she starts spending more time around the main cast, especially her love interest Link. Not that she doesn't stay claimed for Dark.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Ridley may be a jerk, but she cares about Lena and has feelings for Link.
  • Ms. Fanservice: The authors describe Ridley's sex appeal in impressive detail, and the film takes this and runs with it.

     Liv Durand

  • Heroic Sacrifice: Sacrifices her chance to become a Caster Librarian to help Macon escape the Incubus prison.
