Main Characters

     Dre

Andrea “Dre” Greene

Played by: Dominique Fishback

A young woman from Houston with an obsession with the singer Ni’Jah, who takes her devotion to her to very dark places.

  • Ambushing Enemy: Her default mode is to hide and ambush her victims.
  • Ax-Crazy: Dre to a tee, becoming a Serial Killer in the process.
  • Berserk Button: Insulting Ni’Jah or Marissa.
  • Beware the Quiet Ones: Generally, Dre is pretty quiet and withdrawn. But, she also has a Hair-Trigger Temper that blows when someone insults her idol Ni’Jah or her foster sister Marissa.
  • Black-and-White Morality: She seems to view anyone who doesn’t enjoy Ni’Jah and her music (at the very least) as bad — and they need to be killed as a result for their “disrespect”.
  • Dark Action Girl: Dre is a female serial killer who's pretty skilled at killing people. Mostly she ambushes them.
  • Depraved Bisexual: Dre has a one night stand with a man in the series early on. Later she dates another woman, and murders her for not liking Ni'Jah. In fairness though, it's the only case where she murders someone who was involved with her and she's portrayed as unhinged before her sexuality is made clear too.
  • Determinator: Dre is very good at tracking people down and will not let anyone stand in her way of her obsession with Ni’Jah.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Dre’s modus operandi. She stalks and kills any person who voices their dislike of her favorite singer Ni’Jah, all to prove her devotion to her.
  • Evil Feels Good: Dre admits to Eva that it actually felt good to kill people.
  • Foster Kid: A former one. She lived with the Jackson family for several years before being sent back into the system due to her assaulting a classmate at a slumber party she believed was “attacking” Marissa.
  • Freudian Excuse: Zigzagged. Dre is gradually revealed to have been a Foster Kid who was kicked out by the Jacksons after a violent incident when she was about 13 — but she is also described as being “weird” and “very” shy and lonely before moving in with Marissa’s family. Loretta Greene tries to find out about her background, only for the case worker to criticize her and the cameraman (and possibly the audience) for trying to use her background as the reason for why she does the things she does, and categorically refuses Loretta’s request for Dre’s records.
  • Hope Spot: At one point, Dre (under the alias Tony) forms a relationship with a woman named Rashida and even after learning that she doesn’t like Ni’Jah, she continues the relationship going without any initial problems. However, as Dre feels more and more cornered by the authorities, she eventually snaps once again and ends up killing Rashida when the latter criticizes Dre for spending thousands of dollars on tickets for an artist she doesn’t even like. Dre seems somewhat remorseful after Rashida’s death, though ultimately decides that Ni’Jah is more important than trying to improve her life (such as it is) in any meaningful way.
  • I Have Many Names: Dre uses multiple aliases throughout the series including Kayla, Jasmine, Carmen, Tony, and even Marissa.
  • I Just Want to Be Loved: Implied to be the case with Dre. She’s obsessive to an unhealthy degree, but much of it appears to come from a desire to be understood and loved unconditionally. Dre is absolutely devastated when Marissa dies, and subsequently turns her sights to Ni’Jah, hoping to get her attention and be loved.
  • Lady Looks Like a Dude: Dre gets mistaken for male while she's climbing the stage to see Ni'Jah at the end, as a result of her short hair and masculine outfit (at least on the news), though Ni'Jah's aware she's a woman (assuming that's even real).
  • Loony Fan: Dre's obsessive love of Ni'Jah seems to stem from a combination of wanting to be loved and wanting to be noticed. As a result, she decides to kill any person who even so much as criticizes Ni'Jah under the belief that this will prove her devotion to the singer. This is not portrayed as a good thing, and in fact leads to Dre becoming a Serial Killer on the run from the law in the process.
  • The Lost Lenore: It is implied that Dre views Marissa as this, and seems to project her feelings about her late foster sister onto Ni’Jah if the finale is an indicator of anything.
  • Man Bites Man: Accidentally bites Ni’Jah at a party while hallucinating eating a plum.
  • Master of Disguise: Dre changes her fashion, hairstyles, and even gender presentation in order to move about the South.
  • My Greatest Failure: Dre views Marissa’s death as this. Because Dre was out at a club and hooking up with a guy the night Marissa died by suicide (and subsequently ignored Marissa’s desperate texts to her), Dre blames herself for Marissa’s death and she’s uncomfortable when the subject of Marissa is brought up.
  • Mysterious Past: Dre’s life prior to living with the Jackson family as a Foster Kid is left unclear.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Dre's full name is Andrea, but she's only called it occasionally.
  • Pop-Cultural Osmosis Failure: Dre doesn’t know who Halsey is.
  • Queer Establishing Moment: In the last episode, after previously having had casual sex with a man, Dre (while having butched herself up under her "Tony" alias) is shown to have a girlfriend, Rashida, showing she's into women too.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: After Reggie is killed, Dre ditches her stripper co-workers at his house by driving off with her car.
  • Serial Killer: Over the course of the series, Dre gradually becomes one as the body count from her spree rises.
  • Sucks at Dancing: Dre gets a job as an exotic dancer. Her twerking and pole dance moves leave a lot to be desired. Combined with her choice of music (a song by Ny'Jah about a dead baby) and unpleasant attitude toward customers, she earns very little.
  • Villain Protagonist: Dre and her murderous exploits drive the show’s narrative.

Supporting Characters

    Marissa

Marissa Jackson

Played by: Chloe Bailey

Marissa is Dre’s sister and roommate.

  • Dead Star Walking: Marissa, portrayed by Chloe Bailey, dies by suicide during the first episode, though her presence is still felt throughout the series.
  • Driven to Suicide: Marissa commits suicide after learning her boyfriend cheated on her and believing that Dre had ditched her.
  • Plot-Triggering Death: Her suicide breaks Dre and leads to her killing spree, starting with Marissa’s boyfriend Khalid.
  • Posthumous Character: She dies in the premiere, but she appears in flashbacks and videos throughout the show with her memory being ingrained in Dre’s psyche.
