The Caretaker: A positive example - she keeps an eye on Rusty and even goes as far as to feed him and introduce him to the townspeople in the very first story.
The Conscience: Also acts as a voice of reason to Rusty.
Country Mouse: In contrast to Rusty, she has lived in a small rural town all her life.
Deuteragonist: The secondary character of the series.
Establishing Character Moment: Sam meets Rusty while he's exploring the wilderness around Sunnyville. Sam not only befriends this person on the spot; she also take him into her own home, feeds him lunch and even arranges for a local party to introduce him to the townspeople!
Foil: Sam is a country girl while Rusty is a city boy; Sam comes from a family of five children whereas Rusty is an only child; and Sam tends to be more responsible while Rusty can be reckless.
