Party Members

    Kidan Protagonist

Minako Iwamoto

The heroine of the original game. She wakes up in a mansion with no memory of who she is and how she got there. She is actually one of the children of the Iwamoto household, who was possessed by her younger sister Kanako's spirit and got her memories mixed with that of the spirit.

  • Amnesiac Hero: She wakes up in a mansion with no memory of how she got there or who she is, and has to recover her memories. It turns out this is because she was possessed by Kanako and got their memories mixed up.
  • The Hero Dies: In the true end, she is Mercy Killed by Tsukiko to free her from possession by Kanako.
  • Together in Death: Familial version, but she ends up crossing to the afterlife with her sister Kanako after Tsukiko kills her.

    Gidan Protagonist

The heroine of the sequel. She is a mysterious girl who found herself trapped in the Man of the Box's prison.

  • Ambiguously Human: While human on the surface, there are indicators of her being something else, such as having Resurrective Immortality and her head growing a giant hole where her face should be.
  • Heroic Mime: Unlike Minako, she never says a word on her own, which only makes it more unclear who or what she is exactly.
  • Literal Split Personality: While never explicitly stated, there is some information that implies she is this to Youko- getting the true ending requires you to enter "Youko" as the protagonist's name, both have the same power of revival, and the protagonist wears a flower in her hair while Youko has a similarly-shaped one on her head, among other things.
  • Resurrective Immortality: The ability of the player to go back from just before she is killed by pressing the A key is revealed in the ending to be an in-universe power she possesses, meaning she can never truly die.

    Tsukiko Amadzuki

Youko Amadzu/Anotsu

A woman who has also been captured by the Man of the Box and helps the protagonist escape. However, she is the "Man" of the Box herself, who has captured the protagonist. She was once a maid of the Iwamoto family who became the latest miko for the village's box ritual, and survived but became susceptible to corruption by the Box entity. As such, she has been killing people to sacrifice them to the Box.

  • Ax-Crazy: Thanks to influence from the Box, she has become a hatchet-wielding murderer.
  • Not Me This Time: In the omake route, she reveals that she did not set up any of the traps in the prison that are assaulting the party, despite normally being the one to set up the traps in the other routes. This seems to indicate that ??? herself is doing it.
  • Two Aliases, One Character: She initially makes herself out to be a kidnapped victim of the Man in the Box, only for the end to reveal that she is the "Man" herself.
  • Villain Protagonist: You play as the psychotic killer and jailer of the Box dimension in her own route.

    AAAAAA(A)
The protagonist of the omake segments. He is a typical fantasy hero character who finds himself in the mansion and box prison looking for treasure.
  • Genre Refugee: He is basically the archetypal fantasy RPG hero who slays monsters and rescues maidens... only he's ended up in an Explorer Horror duology of games with plenty of Surreal Horror. Though his routes are significantly more comedic than the normal routes.
  • The One Guy: He is the only one of the five playable characters/party members in the duology to be male.
  • Sir Swears-a-Lot: He has quite the potty mouth, with his very first line containing "What the hell..." and his second having him telling BBBBBB to "Shut the fuck up...", and several of his lines if he falls into a trap containing profanity.
  • Yellow/Purple Contrast: Has purple hair and eyes, contrasting his companion BBBBBB's yellow.

    BBBBBB(B)
A mischievous witch who hangs around with the hero.

Other Major Characters

    The Listener

Tsukiko Iwamoto

The character who meets Minako and listens to her story. She is the youngest sister in the Iwamoto household.

  • Canon Name: You can name her whatever you want, but her true name is Tsukiko, and only by entering said name can you get the true ending.

    The Spirit

Kanako Iwamoto

A spirit who haunts the Iwamoto mansion and the antagonist of Shoujo Kidan. She was once a child of the Iwamotos, but was isolated for being an albino "Demon Child". Eventually, she was discovered by a fat man who extorted sex from her, then killed her.

  • Big Bad: Of Kidan as the ghost trapping Minako in the mansion and possessing her.
  • Together in Death: Familial version, but she ends up crossing to the afterlife with her sister Minako after Tsukiko kills her.
  • Vengeful Ghost: She spent her entire life locked up in the basement because the village saw her as a demon child due to her white hair, and eventually she was caught trying to escape and subsequently raped by a fat man who killed her sometime afterwards. This left her with a rage towards the village and now she haunts the mansion she once lived in.

    Shuichiro Iwamoto
The current heir of the Iwamoto household. He despised the outdated ways of the village, in particular the dangerous box ritual, and sought to change those ways with his power as the heir.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: He broke the Box worshipped by the village thinking that it was just some dumb superstition and that if it was gone, the villagers would see there is no need to sacrifice mikos to it, ending the barbaric ritual. Unfortunately, the Box entity is all too real, and destroying the Box causes her to slaughter the entire village in retaliation.

    The Fat Man
An unnamed fat man who caught Kanako escaping her isolation and extorted her vulnerability to rape her.
  • Fat Bastard: He is only known as “the fat man”, and he raped Kanako, then killed a bunch of villagers when she tried to escape.
  • The Ghost: We only hear him described in imageless flashbacks.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: Of the original game. His rape and subsequent murder of Kanako is what turned her into the Vengeful Ghost and Big Bad.
  • No Name Given: He is only called the fat man, and is never identified with any name or title.

    Man of the Box

???

The mysterious antagonist of Shoujo Gidan who kidnapped the protagonist. She is the entity residing in the box. She has demanded sacrifices from the village, and when Shuichiro destroyed the box, she brought about the demise of the village in retaliation. She is responsible for corrupting her current miko, Youko, into becoming a killer and manifests in her body.

  • Big Bad: Of Gidan, as the entity who trapped the protagonist inside the prison and corrupted/possessed Youko.
  • Demonic Possession: When Youko became her latest miko, she seems to have done this, slowly twisting the mind of the miko until she became a vessel. In the main game, Youko sometimes turns into a Girl in the Box, one of her manifestations.
  • Eldritch Abomination: It is never made clear just what the Box entity is, only that whatever was in that box is a powerful Reality Warper who can destroy an entire village when angered, manages a terrifying Pocket Dimension, and manifests in both ghastly, red humanoid forms and a massive Nightmare Face with Giant Hands of Doom.
  • Faux Affably Evil: She is perfectly capable of having a nice, civil conversation with Shuichirou and Tsukiko through Youko, but even then she does things like make morbid jokes about her evil actions.
  • Flunky Boss: Fights with two Hands in the final battle of the omake.
  • Giant Hands of Doom: The Hands enemies, giant red hands she uses to grab the party members in the omake route.
  • My Name Is ???: In the battle against her in the omake route, she is only identified as ???. This is the closest we ever get to a name for her.

    Girl of the Box
The main chaser of Shoujo Gidan, who appears repeatedly to attack the protagonist. They also appear as enemies in the omake.

    Child of the Box
A type of NPC who shows up every now and then in the prison and instantly deteriorates if the protagonist touches them. They also appear as enemies in the omake.
