The characters of Neon Genesis Madoka Magica.
Spoilers may be unmarked. As the author is the primary updater of this page and a bit of a Cloud Cuckoo Lander at times, this may include spoilers for future chapters. Be warned.
Instead of the Evangelions, NERV uses devices called "Incubators" to give children powers they can use to combat the Angels. These powers range from the ability to block any attack by super-hardening one's skin, to being able to regenerate any damage to the body instantaneously, to being able to see for miles without an instrument.
Incubator Users also receive an "SG-Engine," a small gem that is embedded somewhere on their body. (Referred to as "SG-Engines," "Gems," and "Jewels" interchangeably.) The SG-Engine is capable of emitting immense amounts of power. They wear Plugsuits, which link to the SG-Engine and are used to direct the flow of this power.
Finally, they use various types of equipment to combat the Angels. These typically include a system for rapid movement (although not always flight) and a weapons system. The SG-Engines power these devices and automatically amplify their output. (Thrusters are more powerful and need no fuel, weapons are more powerful and sometimes work in completely different ways than intended, etc.)
She is also the Third Child, selected by NERV to combat the Angels.
Her unique power is the ability to quickly regenerate any (any) damage to her body, as well as to repair her suit and equipment. However she still feels pain until the wound is completely gone. Her equipment consists of a pair of three-segmented, skeletal, metal "wings," which actually consist of three independently rotating thrusters (each) and a singe one at the end of the "wing." This allows for impressive airborne mobility. Her weapons consist of a pair of Katana styled swords that are designed to vibrate at a high frequency. They glow blue when in use, and Sayaka seems to be able to alter their shape, although they return to normal when she lets go of them.
Associated tropes:
- An Arm and a Leg - Sayaka's arms are blown off during her fight with Sachiel. Good Thing She Can Heal.
- Big "NO!" - Sayaka gives one loud enough to shake the ground a good distance away. How she pulls this off is unknown.
- Genre Savvy - Sayaka predicts that she is going to have to fight the Angels, that her father is going to try and manipulate her into doing it, and that the Incubator is going to do something to her to let her fight.
- Good Thing You Can Heal - Sayaka would not have survived the fight with Sachiel without her Healing Factor.
- Healing Factor - Sayaka's unique power.
- Laughing Mad - Sayaka while delivering her No-Holds-Barred Beatdown to Sachiel.
- Otaku - Sayaka is apparently very well versed in the Magical Girl genre of anime, and incorrectly guesses that her world is turning into one. It's actually turning into a combination of two Deconstructions. At once.
- Superpowered Evil Side - Sayaka exhibits this when she temporarily loses her mind as a result of Sachiel's Mind Rape. Under the circumstances, it could be compared to what happens when an EVA goes berserk.
- Wrong Genre Savvy - Sayaka believes that the world is becoming a Magical Girl anime, and that she is the protagonist. Oops.
She was going through a state of depression between then and the battle with the Third Angel, believing that she should have died with her parents. The Third Angel used this uncertainty to Mind Rape her and hijack her body. However, she broke out of this when Sayaka told her that she shouldn't waste the life her parents died to save.
Afterwards, she learned that the Angel had used her body to kill several people and injure many more, and was forced to come to terms with it.
She is the First Child, selected by NERV to combat the Angels.
Her unique power is to harden her skin into a nearly indestructible substance. However, this substance can eventually be broken down if enough energy is applied to it, as demonstrated by Sachiel. Her equipment is a pair of forearm-mounted plasma cannons and two multi-directional thrusters mounted on her legs. She is noted as being fairly weak, and unable to synchronize with any other equipment, although Gendo speculated that this was because she was not psychologically stable, that she and believed she was unworthy.
Associated Tropes
- An Arm and a Leg - Mami loses her left arm in her brief battle with Sachiel/the Third Angel.
- Battle in the Center of the Mind - Sachiel Mind Rapes her. Her response? Forcing it back on him, through her own nervous system.
- Full-Frontal Assault - Mami, under Sachiel's control, rampages through the Geofront, killing several soldiers and injuring many more, among them, Gecko Team. This culminates with her attacking Charles and Kanade in their own VTOL, in mid air. All of this she does while completely naked, and missing her left arm.
A mysterious girl who transferred into Sayaka and Madoka's class on the day of the Third Angel's attack. She appeared in Madoka's dream the night before, in which she appeared to have died.
She apparently worked with NERV at one time, but was involved in an incident that killed several scientists and injured several more. Misato Katsuragi was one of the injured, and blames her for it.
She is aware of Shinji and Toji, and speaks with them about Sayaka's powers.
She is the "Zeroth" Child; she has powers that make it appear that she has used the Incubator. However, no one is certain where she obtained them. She is assumed to have come from wherever the Incubators did.Her unique power is unknown, although she has shown the ability to heal others' injuries and seemingly teleport. Her equipment consists of two rockets attached to the backs of her legs. She also seems to be able to generate beams of intense power from the barrels of simple firearms, although how she does this is unknown.
Associated Tropes
- Girl of My Dreams - Madoka dreams of Homura fighting... something. Homura apparently dies. The next day, Homura transfers into her class.
- Tall, Dark and Bishoujo - Referred to as such in chapter 1.
He is the Fourth Child.
His unique power is the ability to heighten his senses to extreme levels. His equipment is unknown.
He is the Fifth Child, much to his irritation as he is older than his brother, the Fourth.
His powers and equipment are unknown.
There are other characters who fight the Angels now, but the Evangelion pilots still exist in this world. Moreover, they seem to have an agenda of their own...
He is friends with Toji Suzuhara, who also appears with him.
NGMM!Shinji's personality is radically different from Canon!Shinji. He is often sarcastic and generally more laid back than his canon counterpart. He is also skeptical of NERV's new method of combating the Angels, thinking that the Incubator Users seem too small to be effective weapons.
He does not recognize Sayaka as his sister.
He is friends with Shinji Ikari, who also appears with him.
He is more apathetic than Shinji, not seeming to care very much about the battle that is taking place.
NERV is an organization that was created to battle the Angels, and prevent Third Impact... or so the world has been told. They are the ones who control the Incubators, although they did not create them.
He still cares for his daughter, but knows that she is one of only a few people who can fight the Angels, and he understands that he has to use her if his plans are to come to fruition.
She is prone to making references to American movies, and is a car buff.
She is very good at her job, most of the time. However, she often comes up against phenomena that do not abide by the laws of physics, such as the Incubator Users' SG-Engines (which can draw nearly infinite amounts of energy seemingly from nowhere) or the Users themselves (whose powers are often scientifically inexplicable). She has a hard time dealing with such things.
He may have motives of his own, however.
She wishes that NERV did not have to force children to fight, but understands that it is a necessity, and that the Incubators are a more efficient and much less dangerous tool than the Evangelions would have been.
They answer directly to the UN.
She has feelings for Charles, but is reluctant to express them due to their difference in rank. Still she refers to him as Charles when they are alone, and is otherwise very familiar with him.
She is wounded when Charles loses control of his VTOL during the Third Angel's attack and is subsequently rushed to the NERV Medical Center.
He has feelings for Kanade Chidori, but does not believe she reciprocates them, although the two are very familiar together.
He is badly wounded by Mami during the Third Angel's attack, and is subsequently rushed to the NERV medical center.
Associated Tropes
- Chivalrous Pervert - The men in his family have a code for dealing with women.
- Precision F-Strike - Once when about to be squished by Sachiel, and again when Mami climbs up the front of his VTOL's cockpit canopy.
They are trained in the use of British made K-Frames, but they had not been shipped over yet when the Third Angel attacked, and were thus forced to engage Mami Tomoe on foot. They suffered no fatalities, but most of them were badly injured.
Based loosely on the Gekkostate from Eureka Seven.
He suffered internal injuries while fighting against Mami Tomoe, and is being treated at the NERV medical center.
He suffered several broken ribs while fighting against Mami Tomoe, and is being treated at the NERV medical center.
Her kneecap was bashed in by Mami Tomoe, and she is currently being treated at the NERV medical center.
His right leg was crushed when Mami Tomoe overturned an ambulance, and he is currently being treated at the NERV medical center.
Associated Tropes
- Cluster F-Bomb - JD does not hold back his language when in combat.
- Sir Swears Alot - Refer to Cluster F-Bomb above.
She suffered a badly broken arm during the battle against Mami Tomoe, and is being treated at the NERV medical center.
She was the only member of the team who was not directly attacked by Mami Tomoe. Still, she is staying with them at the NERV medical center.
Sachiel is referred to as "he," although he has no visible gender.
Associated Tropes
- An Arm and a Leg - Sayaka removes many of his limbs before finally killing him.
- Cruel and Unusual Death - Sliced apart piece by piece by Sayaka, has both of his lungs punctured so he can no longer breathe, and Sayaka just keeps going.
- Good Thing You Can Heal - Somewhat subverted. Sachiel can heal, but he can only heal one part of his body at a time, feels pain, and can be crippled if the organs that do things like, say, oxygenate his blood, are destroyed.
- Mind Rape - Uses this on both Mami and Sayaka. In the latter case, it backfires, setting off the No-Holds-Barred Beatdown that eventually kills him.
Shamshel is referred to as "she," although she has no visible gender. It is also notable that she is only one of three Angels who are referred to as female.
Ramiel is referred to as "he," although he has no visible gender.
Associated Tropes
- Only Sane Man - Ramiel is one of the few Angels with a level head. (along with Matarael, Arimasael, and maybe Tabris)
When the Angel attacks, and the JSSDF drops an N2 mine on it, she is injured in the explosion, before being saved by Homura. She is later taken to the NERV medical facility, although she wakes up on the VTOL ride over and appears to be fine.
Associated Tropes
- Impaled with Extreme Prejudice - By a street sign that was thrown by an explosion. She almost dies, but Homura saves her.
- Precision F-Strike - When she first sees Sachiel.
The night before the day when the third Angel attacked, she experienced a dream in which the world was ending, and she spoke to a small, white animal about saving it. She saw another girl in the dream, Homura Akemi, who she would proceed to meet for the first time the next day.
She is one also one of NERV's candidates, although she herself has not used the Incubator yet.
Associated Tropes
- Girl of My Dreams - Homura... possibly.
- Visions of Another Self - Possibly, given her dream in the prologue.
