     Incubator Users

Instead of the Evangelions, NERV uses devices called "Incubators" to give children powers they can use to combat the Angels. These powers range from the ability to block any attack by super-hardening one's skin, to being able to regenerate any damage to the body instantaneously, to being able to see for miles without an instrument.

Incubator Users also receive an "SG-Engine," a small gem that is embedded somewhere on their body. (Referred to as "SG-Engines," "Gems," and "Jewels" interchangeably.) The SG-Engine is capable of emitting immense amounts of power. They wear Plugsuits, which link to the SG-Engine and are used to direct the flow of this power.

Finally, they use various types of equipment to combat the Angels. These typically include a system for rapid movement (although not always flight) and a weapons system. The SG-Engines power these devices and automatically amplify their output. (Thrusters are more powerful and need no fuel, weapons are more powerful and sometimes work in completely different ways than intended, etc.)

Sayaka Ikari
The daughter of Gendo Ikari, the commander of NERV, Sayaka is a free spirited girl who is also an anime Otaku, specifically interested in the Magical Girl genre. She is best friends with Madoka Kaname and Hitomi Shizuki, who go to the same high school as her.

She is also the Third Child, selected by NERV to combat the Angels.

Her unique power is the ability to quickly regenerate any (any) damage to her body, as well as to repair her suit and equipment. However she still feels pain until the wound is completely gone. Her equipment consists of a pair of three-segmented, skeletal, metal "wings," which actually consist of three independently rotating thrusters (each) and a singe one at the end of the "wing." This allows for impressive airborne mobility. Her weapons consist of a pair of Katana styled swords that are designed to vibrate at a high frequency. They glow blue when in use, and Sayaka seems to be able to alter their shape, although they return to normal when she lets go of them.

Associated tropes:

Mami Tomoe
A girl who is one year older than Sayaka, Madoka, and Hitomi. She is very attractive, and wears her hair in a unique fashion. She has a fairly subdued personality. Her parents were both NERV scientists and were killed in a car crash on the way to NERV Japan, where she was to use the Incubator. In the accident, Mami's mother shielded her, at the cost of her life.

She was going through a state of depression between then and the battle with the Third Angel, believing that she should have died with her parents. The Third Angel used this uncertainty to Mind Rape her and hijack her body. However, she broke out of this when Sayaka told her that she shouldn't waste the life her parents died to save.

Afterwards, she learned that the Angel had used her body to kill several people and injure many more, and was forced to come to terms with it.

She is the First Child, selected by NERV to combat the Angels.

Her unique power is to harden her skin into a nearly indestructible substance. However, this substance can eventually be broken down if enough energy is applied to it, as demonstrated by Sachiel. Her equipment is a pair of forearm-mounted plasma cannons and two multi-directional thrusters mounted on her legs. She is noted as being fairly weak, and unable to synchronize with any other equipment, although Gendo speculated that this was because she was not psychologically stable, that she and believed she was unworthy.

Associated Tropes

  • An Arm and a Leg - Mami loses her left arm in her brief battle with Sachiel/the Third Angel.
  • Battle in the Center of the Mind - Sachiel Mind Rapes her. Her response? Forcing it back on him, through her own nervous system.
  • Full-Frontal Assault - Mami, under Sachiel's control, rampages through the Geofront, killing several soldiers and injuring many more, among them, Gecko Team. This culminates with her attacking Charles and Kanade in their own VTOL, in mid air. All of this she does while completely naked, and missing her left arm.

Homura Akemi

A mysterious girl who transferred into Sayaka and Madoka's class on the day of the Third Angel's attack. She appeared in Madoka's dream the night before, in which she appeared to have died.

She apparently worked with NERV at one time, but was involved in an incident that killed several scientists and injured several more. Misato Katsuragi was one of the injured, and blames her for it.

She is aware of Shinji and Toji, and speaks with them about Sayaka's powers.

She is the "Zeroth" Child; she has powers that make it appear that she has used the Incubator. However, no one is certain where she obtained them. She is assumed to have come from wherever the Incubators did.Her unique power is unknown, although she has shown the ability to heal others' injuries and seemingly teleport. Her equipment consists of two rockets attached to the backs of her legs. She also seems to be able to generate beams of intense power from the barrels of simple firearms, although how she does this is unknown.

Associated Tropes

Alphonse Elric
The son of Trisha Elric, Alphonse is a polite, sensitive boy. He and his older brother Edward used the NERV America Incubator shortly after the Third Angel attacked Tokyo-3.

He is the Fourth Child.

His unique power is the ability to heighten his senses to extreme levels. His equipment is unknown.

Edward Elric
The son of Trisha Elric, Edward is an extremely intelligent and hot headed boy. He and his younger brother Alphonse used the NERV America Incubator shortly after the Third Angel attacked Tokyo-3.

He is the Fifth Child, much to his irritation as he is older than his brother, the Fourth.

His powers and equipment are unknown.

     Former EVA Pilots

There are other characters who fight the Angels now, but the Evangelion pilots still exist in this world. Moreover, they seem to have an agenda of their own...

Shinji Ikari
A nineteen year old boy who has knowledge about the Angels, NERV, and the Evangelions. He first appears on top of a distant hill, watching the battle against the Third Angel. He is surprised that the Angels "still" exist, and seems to know a good deal about them.

He is friends with Toji Suzuhara, who also appears with him.

NGMM!Shinji's personality is radically different from Canon!Shinji. He is often sarcastic and generally more laid back than his canon counterpart. He is also skeptical of NERV's new method of combating the Angels, thinking that the Incubator Users seem too small to be effective weapons.

He does not recognize Sayaka as his sister.

Toji Suzuhara
A nineteen year old boy who has knowledge about the Angels, NERV, and the Evangelions. He first appears on top of a distant hill, watching the battle against the Third Angel. He is surprised that the Angels "still" exist, and seems to know a good deal about them.

He is friends with Shinji Ikari, who also appears with him.

He is more apathetic than Shinji, not seeming to care very much about the battle that is taking place.

     NERV Personnel

NERV is an organization that was created to battle the Angels, and prevent Third Impact... or so the world has been told. They are the ones who control the Incubators, although they did not create them.

Gendo Ikari
Sayaka's father and commander of NERV, Gendo Ikari is a cold, calculating man. He uses his enemies and his allies alike to achieve his goals.

He still cares for his daughter, but knows that she is one of only a few people who can fight the Angels, and he understands that he has to use her if his plans are to come to fruition.

Misato Katsuragi
The tactical Commander of NERV, Misato Katsuragi at first seems to have a laid back, unprofessional personality. However, she can become very serious under pressure, and very supportive if someone she cares for needs it.

She is prone to making references to American movies, and is a car buff.

Ritsuko Akagi
The head scientist of NERV, Ritsuko Akagi is in charge of studying the Angels and developing new ways of combating them, as well as studying the Incubators and the children who use them.

She is very good at her job, most of the time. However, she often comes up against phenomena that do not abide by the laws of physics, such as the Incubator Users' SG-Engines (which can draw nearly infinite amounts of energy seemingly from nowhere) or the Users themselves (whose powers are often scientifically inexplicable). She has a hard time dealing with such things.

Kozo Fuyutsuki
One of Gendo's oldest friends and the deputy commander of NERV. He occasionally has to remind Gendo that everything they do is for the good of mankind, and that he should not hate himself for doing what is necessary.

He may have motives of his own, however.

Yui Ikari
Formerly a leading scientist of NERV, she is the Husband of Gendo and the father of Sayaka. She currently resides within the NERV Japan Incubator, the living consciousness that controls it. She regards this sacrifice as necessary to ensure the survival of mankind. She is a kind, compassionate woman who cares very much for her family, and wishes it was not necessary that they be pushed apart for mankind's sake.

She wishes that NERV did not have to force children to fight, but understands that it is a necessity, and that the Incubators are a more efficient and much less dangerous tool than the Evangelions would have been.

Kyoko Zeppelin Soryu
Formerly a leading scientist of NERV, she is the mother of Kyouko Langley Soryu. She resides within the NERV Germany Incubator. She is a boastful woman who takes great pride in her accomplishments and those of her daughter, Kyouko. (Note: Kyoko versus Kyouko.)

Trisha Elric
Formerly a leading scientist of NERV, she is the mother of Edward and Alphonse Elric. She resides within the NERV America Incubator. She is kind, and cares a great deal about her sons.

     JSSDF Personnel
While NERV is specifically tasked with destroying the Angels, the JSSDF serves as Japan's "conventional" military. They maintain large amounts of high tech military equipment, much of it American made.

They answer directly to the UN.

Kanade Chidori
A Second Lieutenant in the JSSDF and an old friend of Misato Katsuragi, Kanade Chidori is an energetic young woman who has a long history of bending the rules to help her friends that has kept her from being promoted. She serves on the same airbase as Charles Weber.

She has feelings for Charles, but is reluctant to express them due to their difference in rank. Still she refers to him as Charles when they are alone, and is otherwise very familiar with him.

She is wounded when Charles loses control of his VTOL during the Third Angel's attack and is subsequently rushed to the NERV Medical Center.

Charles Weber
A Warrant Officer and VTOL pilot in the JSSDF Air Force, Charles is a free spirit who has only remained in the JSSDF because, quite frankly, he is very good at his job. He often acts like a playboy, but is actually a Chivalrous Pervert. Although he will never admit it, he is actually a virgin.

He has feelings for Kanade Chidori, but does not believe she reciprocates them, although the two are very familiar together.

He is badly wounded by Mami during the Third Angel's attack, and is subsequently rushed to the NERV medical center.

Associated Tropes

  • Chivalrous Pervert - The men in his family have a code for dealing with women.
  • Precision F-Strike - Once when about to be squished by Sachiel, and again when Mami climbs up the front of his VTOL's cockpit canopy.
     Gecko Team
A Special Forces team based in the UK but assigned to NERV, Gecko Team was the main force in Mami Tomoe's way during the Third Angel's attack.

They are trained in the use of British made K-Frames, but they had not been shipped over yet when the Third Angel attacked, and were thus forced to engage Mami Tomoe on foot. They suffered no fatalities, but most of them were badly injured.

Based loosely on the Gekkostate from Eureka Seven.

Holland North
The leader of Gecko Team, Holland is often hotheaded and rash, but rarely acts against the interests of the rest of the team. He regulates Team discipline fairly loosely while off duty, but during combat his leadership turns them into a deadly fighting force. A veteran of the Post-Impact War, he previously had almost his entire squadron wiped out by an N2 weapon, and is incredibly protective of his squadmates' lives. His callsign is technically "Holland," but he is referred to by his squad as "boss" or "chief" most of the time.

He suffered internal injuries while fighting against Mami Tomoe, and is being treated at the NERV medical center.

Matthew Thornkirk
The third-in-command of Gecko Team, Matthew is an experienced soldier. He is well known for his sense of humor when off duty, but handles combat seriously and follows orders well. His callsign is "afro" due to his infamous hairstyle.

He suffered several broken ribs while fighting against Mami Tomoe, and is being treated at the NERV medical center.

Hilda Kerrigan
The second-in-command of Gecko Team, Hilda is the Team's heavy weapons expert. She is normally looked up to as a mother figure in the team, and is always willing to help with personal problems. On the battlefield, she is known for her skill at destroying hostile vehicles. During the Post-Impact War, she garnered a reputation as "Hilda Hellfire" for taking down hostile tanks and helicopters. While some of the stories were fabricated as propaganda, she has been confirmed to have killed at least four tanks and three helicopters, along with around a dozen APCs, and an early-model NORMAL (although it is possible she had help for the last one). Her callsign is "Hellfire," a relic of her reputation during the Post-Impact War.

Her kneecap was bashed in by Mami Tomoe, and she is currently being treated at the NERV medical center.

JD Erickson
The "rookie" of Gecko Team, JD is by far the least disciplined soldier in Gecko Team. A loud mouth with trouble following orders, it mystifies many outsiders why he is in the team at all. Those within know that behind this exterior he is actually an incredible K-Frame pilot, able to outmaneuver even Holland at times. His callsign is "Moondoggie," a name given to him by squadmate Katherine, which he does not particularly like.

His right leg was crushed when Mami Tomoe overturned an ambulance, and he is currently being treated at the NERV medical center.

Associated Tropes

Katherine Marigold
The second youngest member of Gecko Team, and its communications expert, Katherine is by far the most energetic of the Team. She is also a top rate K-Frame pilot. Her callsign is "Gidget," in reference to the book and movie, which she grew up loving.

She suffered a badly broken arm during the battle against Mami Tomoe, and is being treated at the NERV medical center.

Talho Makise
The squad medic and mechanic, Talho is looked up to for two reasons; she is kind and compassionate towards her squadmates, and she has served with Holland since the team was founded, being the only other surviving member of the original team. She and Holland are particularly close.

She was the only member of the team who was not directly attacked by Mami Tomoe. Still, she is staying with them at the NERV medical center.

     Angels
Sachiel
The Third Angel, and the first to attack Tokyo-3, Sachiel resembles a giant humanoid, standing roughly 40 meters tall. He is portrayed as extremely prideful, and completely ignorant of the humans he encounters. Once he does come to understand them, he still finds them laughably inferior.

Sachiel is referred to as "he," although he has no visible gender.

Associated Tropes

  • An Arm and a Leg - Sayaka removes many of his limbs before finally killing him.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death - Sliced apart piece by piece by Sayaka, has both of his lungs punctured so he can no longer breathe, and Sayaka just keeps going.
  • Good Thing You Can Heal - Somewhat subverted. Sachiel can heal, but he can only heal one part of his body at a time, feels pain, and can be crippled if the organs that do things like, say, oxygenate his blood, are destroyed.
  • Mind Rape - Uses this on both Mami and Sayaka. In the latter case, it backfires, setting off the No-Holds-Barred Beatdown that eventually kills him.

Shamshel
The Fourth Angel, Shamshel is impulsive and vengeful.

Shamshel is referred to as "she," although she has no visible gender. It is also notable that she is only one of three Angels who are referred to as female.

Ramiel
The Fifth Angel, Ramiel acts as something of a leader and voice of reason for the Angels. He attempts to establish some semblance of order in the wake of Sachiel's sudden death.

Ramiel is referred to as "he," although he has no visible gender.

Associated Tropes

  • Only Sane Man - Ramiel is one of the few Angels with a level head. (along with Matarael, Arimasael, and maybe Tabris)

Tabris
The enigmatic Seventeenth Angel, Tabris knows more than he will tell his fellow Angels. He states that he suspects the Angels will fail, but also mentions that their victory is not entirely impossible, and that it is possible that neither side (The Angels or the Humans) will see a clear victory.

     Others

Hitomi Shizuki
A friend of Sayaka and Madoka who goes to school with them. She is a beautiful girl who is very popular.

When the Angel attacks, and the JSSDF drops an N2 mine on it, she is injured in the explosion, before being saved by Homura. She is later taken to the NERV medical facility, although she wakes up on the VTOL ride over and appears to be fine.

Associated Tropes

Madoka Kaname
Sayaka's best friend, she is often very quiet and shy, and intends to be a doctor when she grows up. She goes to the same school as Sayaka.

The night before the day when the third Angel attacked, she experienced a dream in which the world was ending, and she spoke to a small, white animal about saving it. She saw another girl in the dream, Homura Akemi, who she would proceed to meet for the first time the next day.

She is one also one of NERV's candidates, although she herself has not used the Incubator yet.

Associated Tropes

Junko Kaname
Madoka's mother and an old friend of Misato, Ritsuko, Kanade, and Kazuko. She holds a position of some importance in an unknown organization, (the details of which she specifically keeps from her family) and seems to have been aware that the Angel was going to attack, warning Madoka to listen to any law enforcement officials and evacuation notices.
