Back to Main Page

Mystical mercenaries that sell their spells. A lot of the Lore resent that they never do anything without reference to the almighty dollar, but, as one of the witches puts it, they learned long ago that witches that lived in nice houses and had the ear of the king got burned to death a lot less often. Witches are born, not made, and are immortal.

Tropes shared by all Witches and Sorceresses

  • Red String of Fate: Averted, witches don't believe in fate and don't have a particular fated mate.
    • They're one. Men are either not witches (and go by another term) or mortal. It's not been described.
    • Witches worship Hecate, because she represents balance between good and evil.
    • Depending of the power of a witch she might be a Sorceress, but never a Sorceri. One is a designation, the other a species. Sorceress (and Sorcerers) have their own dimensions.

Carrow Graie

AKA Carrow the Incarcerated, Mariketa's best friend. Often jailed for public nudity to the point of being friendly with and knowing the names of the local cops and the frequent offenders. Married to Malkolm Slaine.

Tropes:

  • The Archmage: A rare three-caste witch, Warrior, enchantress, and conjurer with her strength in the warrior caste.
  • The Captain: A General in rank, leading sections of the witch armies as a warrior but in her off hours she parties hard.
  • Drama-Preserving Handicap: Subverted. Her power source is happiness, but she can't use her own happiness... except it turns out she's actually never been truly happy until she lets go of her parents abandonment.
  • The Empath: She gains power from Happiness, but she can detect other emotions as well.
  • Friend or Foe?: She goes after Declan for Regin, only to realise too late that Regin fell in love and doesn't want him to die.
  • Good Bad Girl: She's actually not had sex in many years despite her reputation, and she initially refuses to sleep with Malkolm just to bring him back to the Order until she falls in love with him.
  • Hard-Drinking Party Girl: Hey, happiness makes her stronger. It has nothing to do with her parents.
  • Honey Trap: Subverted The Order use Carrow as one for Malkolm. They fall in love, but the Order do succeed in capturing Malkolm.
  • It's Always Mardi Gras in New Orleans: She promises to settle down except for one tuesday in february, and tells Malkolm he has to come.
  • Older Than They Look: She's a very good looking 75.
  • Parental Abandonment: One of her earliest memories is of the party her parents threw for her eighth birthday. Which they didn't invite her to.
  • Promotion to Parent: With Ruby. This is just one more factor that makes her grow up emotionally.
  • "Uh-Oh" Eyes: Her eyes glitter with strong emotion instead of changing colour. It's implied she can control this as she does it to scare Dixon.

Elianna:

Elianna is the oldest witch in the New Orleans Coven. Until Mariketa came into her power she was in charge, serving as a den mother to the young witches sent to Andoain for training as witches.

Tropes:

  • Age Without Youth: She got the immortality part from her witch part and the aging from the human one. She hides this with a glamour.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: Half witch, half human.
  • Team Mom: She acts as a mother figure for all the witches who grew up in Andoain.

Mariketa

AKA Marika the Awaited, Mariketa the Glass Witch, or Glitch. Predicted to be the Chosen One of the House of Witches. Married to Bowen MacRieve, and best friend of Carrow. She competed in The Hie but lost.

Tropes:

  • Achilles' Heel: Mirrors can entrance her potentially trapping her forever.
  • Always Second Best: Between her parents and first boyfriend, she feels like she's this.
  • The Archmage: Five-caste witch. And Queennote  of Mirrors, or captromancy.
  • Bad Powers, Bad People: Subverted, the power she got from Haxa is greedy but doesn't make her evil.
  • Daddy Had a Good Reason for Abandoning You: He was fated to fight Haxa, and lose.
  • Locked in a Freezer: A tomb for Incubi, who then capture Mari and she spends three weeks slowly starving. Done by her future husband during the Talisman's Hie. Trapped with two demonsnote  and three fey.note
  • Older Than They Look: Averted, Mariketa is as old as she looks and in the midst of freezing into her immortality.
  • Parental Abandonment: Zigzagged Her father was predicted to go up against the witches' Big Bad and lose, her mother was unable to bear being without him went against Haxa as well.
    • Elyiana chose to try and give Mari a normal childhood by lying about her parents' disappearance which made her think this trope was played straight.
  • Prophetic Fallacy: Mari spends years under a Glamour and wearing a red cloak to try and avoid "a powerful Lore male who seeks to take Mari away from the House of Witches". It turns out to be Bowen, who strips the cloak from her because it's slowing them down and sees through part of the Glamour and thinks she tricking him. This leads him to trap her and some others in a Tomb. When he lets them out her Glamour is gone and he falls for her, proving the precautions to have been useless the whole time. But when he tries to take her away from her Coven Mari just tells him "No" and nothing happens. However, the red cloak that she wore did make it difficult for Haxa to spy on Mari and the removal accelerated the first prophecies that she was awaited for.
  • The Chosen One: For the witches anyway.fnoe

Ruby

A young (seven-year-old) witch, recently orphaned by the Order who killed her mother while trying to capture her. She tortured and killed twenty Order members when she lost control in her fear afterward. Adopted by Carrow Graie and Malkolm Slaine.

Tropes:

  • The Archmage: A rare three-caste witch, Warrior, enchantress, and conjurer with her strength in the warrior caste.
  • Call-Back: Mariketa told Bowen that a young witch showed her magic before she left for the Hie that was more powerful than anything she could do. Carrow makes a comment that reveals it to be Ruby, who is actually a powerful witch for any age and with considerable control.
  • Cute Witch: She's adorable. Even if she accidentally murdered twenty soldier after they her mother's murder.
  • Disappeared Dad: Of the deadbeat kind.
  • Missing Mom: Her mother Amanda, was murdered by The Order who were probably trying to get Ruby just before the start of Demon From the Dark.
  • Parental Substitute:
    • Carrow, her mother's cousin and fellow three-caste witch. She knew Carrow and was fond of her before, they bond in their cell even more.
    • Malkolm Slaine, as a stepdemon. Lathe as Aunt and Babysitter.
  • Tyke-Bomb: Zigzagged, but two Sorceri suggest that she could become a Sorceress (not a Sorceri) if she killed a Sorceri for their power. The Sorceri seem to know something about Ruby that might imply a Superpowered Evil Side.
    • Carrow rightfully keeps her as far from them as she can and is worried that Ruby will be convinced.
