Main Characters

    Jeannie
Played by: Barbara Eden
A beautiful genie who was trapped in her bottle for 2,000 years until she was freed by Major Anthony Nelson, whom she falls in love with.

  • Badass Adorable: She's a very cute woman with phenomenal cosmic powers.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: She's usually a sweet and kind woman, but even Tony isn't spared from her wrath and magic, when sufficiently pissed off.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: She gets very jealous when other women show an interest in Tony and is willing to use her powers to fend them off.
  • Dude Magnet: She is very beautiful and many men have been taken with her, such as Roger, some one shot characters and even Tony himself.
  • Dumb Blonde: For instance, when she tries to clean Tony's house without using her powers, she ends up mopping a tree. Of course, being trapped in a bottle for 2000 years would make anyone a little clueless.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: She has blonde hair and is a benevolent genie at her core.
  • Happily Married: To Tony by Season 5.
  • Head-Turning Beauty: Many men have this reaction after meeting her, due to her often choosing clothes that emphasize just how beautiful she is.
  • Hidden Depths: For her bubbly, sweet nature, and nonchalant use of her magic, she knows how grave the repercussions of flippant use of it. Demonstrated when she grants Tony the use of magic and he has all grandiose, well intentioned plans, such as ending world hunger and diseases, she drops her happy-go lucky visage and cautiously warns him before he does such a thing.
Jeannie: (to Tony in a serious tone) You must be very careful with magic, Master. If you use it to stop a war, you could start two even greater ones in its place.
  • Housewife: Strives to be this in order to please Tony, with limited success.
  • Innocent Fanservice Girl: She often chooses outfits that highlights her lovely legs and stunning figure, but given she only has eyes for Tony, she doesn't mean to attract the attention from men she usually gets.
  • Love at First Sight: She falls in love with Major Nelson after he frees her from her bottle and even passionately kisses him upon greeting.
  • Mayfly–December Romance: She is several centuries older than Tony.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Absolutely. She is very pretty and her default outfit is a Bedlah Babe-style of clothes. Not to mention that when she has to wear "civilian" clothes she tends to choose dresses with criminally short miniskirts.
  • Muggle–Mage Romance: She wants to have this with Tony but has no luck... until they finally get married in the final season.
  • Punny Name: She is, after all, a genie.
  • So Beautiful, It's a Curse: It's explained that she was renowned as one of the most beautiful women in all of Arabia in her time. In doing so she caught the eye of an evil Djinn, whom after proposing to her, she turned him down for his cruel demeanor. In turn he was the one who imprisoned her in the bottle for thousands of years.

    Major Anthony "Tony" Nelson
Played by: Larry Hagman
An astronaut who freed Jeannie when his failed space craft made him make an emergency landing on a deserted island. Grateful for Jeannie saving his life, he frees her, only for Jeannie to then devote her entire existence to him.
  • Broken Ace: Awesome in just about every way, but often under a mental strain.
  • Chick Magnet: He is very popular with the ladies.
  • Crazy Jealous Guy: He has gotten jealous when other men take an interest in Jeannie, though he denies it.
  • Guile Hero: Tony isn't really a fighter, but he's a very clever and quick-witted man who can usually find a way out of any situation, either with Jeannie's magic or his own intuition.
  • Happily Married: To Jeannie in Season 5.
  • Humble Hero: Despite having a beautiful magical genie living with him willing to obey his every wish, Tony prefers a simple and quiet life with Jeannie (and continues to work hard at his job in the space program with no fuss).
  • Keeping Secrets Sucks: Tony has to constantly lie to everyone around him about Jeannie and the odd things that occur in his home (or just in general with him) because of her. He also has to allow Dr. Bellows to be gaslighted into thinking he's going mad (or rather let everyone else think he's mad). It's clear he hates doing it, not only because he's an honest man but because it causes nothing but constant stress for himself and creates antagonism from Dr. Bellows (who's a victim by proxy) and Tony would rather tell him the truth, but he knows Jeannie would be taken from him and it would more than likely cost him his job.
  • Mr. Fanservice: He's undeniably handsome, in a clean cut, all American son way, and many scenes show he has a muscular physique under that flattering uniform. The fact that he's also an astronaut makes him the object of desire for many pretty young ladies, to Jeannie's chagrin.
  • Nice Guy: Tony is a smart, kind, caring and humble man who is proud of his job and never takes advantage of Jeannie's incredible powers.
  • Non-Action Guy: Downplayed as he has stepped up and fought before, but in general he's a peaceful man and not a fighter (despite his claims of being "trained extensively in hand-to-hand combat").
  • Tsundere: A rare male example. He is mostly exasperated by Jeannie and her magic, but deep down he does care for her and her happiness.

    Dr. Alfred Bellows
Played by: Hayden Rorke
The doctor of the NASA Space Program and the (unofficial) main antagonist of the series.

  • Anti-Villain: Dr. Bellows isn't trying to incriminate Tony or expose Jeannie to be cruel, he's only doing so because he's desperate to prove that his "delusions" aren't all in his head and he's right about the crazy things that are constantly happening all around him.
  • Arch-Enemy: Averted. Dr. Bellows, despite his antagonism, is a good friend to Tony and bears no real malice towards him, despite the animosity that comes up during the show.
  • Benevolent Boss: Dr. Bellows may be watching every move Tony and Roger make, but he's a fair and supportive authority and they trust him with their medical or psychological health.
  • Cassandra Truth: He's constantly in plain view of all the chaotic things Jeannie causes and has firsthand experience in dealing with the oddities surrounding Tony, but of course, any proof he may have had is undone by the end and he is always chalked up as just being mentally unstable. His desperation to prove he's not crazy is his main motivation for being so antagonistic towards Tony.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Dr. Bellows sometimes resorts to extremes to expose Tony, but there are lines he won't cross.
    • He may consider Tony the bane of his existence for the mental strain he puts on him, but he knows damn well Tony isn't a bad person, even defending him when a slimy critic accusing him of such.
Bellows: Major Nelson is not a crook.
    • In one episode, he tells a deluded Roger that he will never make it as an actor (because he is in fact terrible) but it's clear from his manner that he took no pleasure in crushing his dreams and offers a sincere apology for the mix-up.
Bellows: Why don't you get on with the report, Major? And... I am sorry.
    • In one of the final episodes, he finally discovers the truth about Jeannie and is given closure for all he's been through. When Tony sadly announces his intention to quit NASA and move away with Jeannie to protect her, he is visibly upset and considers Tony's resignation a "waste to the Space Program". He also declares that despite everything, it's been a genuine pleasure working with him and promises not to tell anyone about Jeannie.
  • Happily Married: To his beautiful wife Amanda Bellows, who becomes Jeannie's friend.
  • It Was Here, I Swear!: This trope is the bane of his existence.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He's abrasive, intrusive and is constantly antagonizing Tony (and Roger to some extent), but he's a good person deep down and it's clear that despite his obsession, he considers Tony and Roger friends and will always be there for them when necessary.

    Major Roger Healey
Played by: Bill Daily
Tony's best friend in the space program and one of the very few to know Jeannie's secret.
  • Ambiguously Bi: Along with his attraction to women, it's occasionally suggested that he's attracted to men, which is always Played for Laughs. A particular standout is his reaction to thinking that he's been invited to Tony and Jeannie's honeymoon.
  • Casanova Wannabe: Downplayed as he has had women over the series, but unlike Tony, he is often the one without a date and has a much harder time finding a woman.
  • The Determinator: Often comes back through being sent away by Jeannie and her sister and consistently tries to help out Tony.
  • Greed: His biggest flaw. Roger is constantly chasing fame and riches and even becomes Jeannie's master, but it fell apart because his extravagant desires caused him to out himself to the space program. Even after Tony saves him from the close call, he still tries to cash in on Jeannie's powers.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: With Tony. They always have each other's backs and Roger is the only one in the series that Tony fully trusts with Jeannie's secret. Roger himself has gone to painful lengths to aid Tony or keep Jeannie's powers a secret for their sake.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He's greedy, self-centred and constantly trying to take advantage of Jeannie's power. However, he's also a very good and loyal friend who loves his job and would never do anything to jeopardize it.
  • Secret-Keeper: He's the only other person in the show who knows Jeannie's secret.
  • Undying Loyalty: Towards Tony and Jeannie, in spite of his greed he'll always be there for them.
