The Outlaws

    Robin "Hood" (The Ranger)

Robin (a.k.a. 'Hood', a.k.a. The Ranger)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/robin_tropes_image.jpg
The Ranger - leader of the outlaws.

The legendary leader of outlaws has returned to bring justice to the greenwood. Thought long-dead after being executed by the state, the hooded hero wields a new sinister-looking longbow and brings death to those who oppress the downtrodden. The ancient legend lives on.

Robin is a sniper and master infiltrator. Equipped with a powerful longbow, the ranger can fire explosive arrows and use flashbangs to daze and confuse.

  • Big Damn Heroes: Robin gains extra xp for shooting other players carrying the chest or other objectives, and there are trophies that require him to basically save his team from being defeated at the last second. Essentially, it all steers towards masterful shots that snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. In addition his explosive arrow is one of the only things that can defeat the menacing Sheriff.
  • Boom, Headshot!: Robin’s longbow allows him to perform these with perfect accuracy from great distances. A headshot is a guaranteed way to kill another player or soldier.
  • Dead Person Impersonation: It's speculated that once Hood dies, another takes his place and the title. Before the beginning of the game Hood was recently executed - it is played as Maybe Magic, Maybe Mundane but this is certainly one interpretation of what happens and per his character legend (which can be unlocked in game) it is suggested that the title is passed between others. Confirmed in the State lore - the Sheriff was once Hood himself, having been offered it by its previous holder when he became too old.
  • Defector from Decadence: Robin possesses military skill and appears at one point to have been involved with the State before jumping ship.
  • Improbable Aiming Skills: Justified as he's Robin Hood and it's a big part of the legend. Importantly, this being a game dependent on players skill, he can be quite possibly the worst archer you have seen in your life. On the other spectrum his shots can be inhuman, depending on your skill. The trophies, lore and perks all try to assist the player in reaching the latter.
  • In the Hood: His face is shadowed and his identity is unknown - Hood could be anyone, which is the point. This was actually the reason the game was created, as cool concept art sparked the imagination of the development team.
  • Legacy Character: The title of Hood is passed down from outlaw to outlaw. The State’s lore confirms this, as the Sheriff used to be Hood himself. Robin is the current Hood at the time of the game.
  • Living Legend: Robin is ‘Hood’ (Robin Hood, if you will) and as Hood he is already a legendary and near mythical figure. Even in his character trailer he is introduced almost immediately as not just an outlaw, but a legend.
  • Master Archer: He's Robin Hood, what did you expect? In game, his trophies aim to get the player to do this by encouraging them to pull off ridiculous trick shots. His perks also assist with long shots and improve damage the longer the length of shot.
  • Multiple-Choice Past: Robin's background is a mystery and the title of Hood appears to be one that has been taken up by many outlaws.
  • The Leader: To his gang of outlaws - reflected in the fact that his markings for his team last the longest to assist with directing everyone.

    Marianne Fitzwalter (The Hunter)

Marianne Fitzwalter (a.k.a. The Hunter)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/1fa9f885_8b0e_4956_9054_e22cb6ffdddb.jpeg
The Hunter - a master assassin.

Marianne Fitzwalter was the heir to a powerful Scottish nobleman, before he was betrayed and butchered by the State. As a result Marianne swore revenge and is now is carving a path of vengeance across the country with her crossbow and its mounted blade. Known never to make the same mistake twice, she has fashioned powerful weapons and tools improved upon every failure of her past.

With a burst-fire crossbow attached to her bracer, the Hunter is as elusive as she is mysterious. Her quick takedowns, invisibility magic, and smoke grenades make her a terror in close-quarters.

  • Adaptational Nationality: Commonly Marianne is English, like Robin, and sometimes paired to be close to where he used to live etc. In this version she grew up in Scotland.
  • Blue Blood: Marianne was the heir to a powerful Scottish duke before he was overthrown by the State.
  • Brave Scot: Marianne, in this adaptation, is Scottish and also very brave.
  • Noble Fugitive: Since throwing her lot in with Hood and his gang Marianne is now a fugitive of the state, but also still nobility.
  • Revenge: Marianne had to leave her life behind after the State betrayed her father. Now she seeks revenge for wrongs committed against her.
  • Rightful King Returns: Marianne desperately wants to fulfil this trope and reclaim her Scottish lands.
  • Stealth Hi/Bye: Often possible due to Marianne’s ability to completely disappear at a whim (and a fully filled Ultimate bar).

    "Little" John Nailer (The Brawler)

John Nailer (a.k.a Little John a.k.a. The Brawler)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/john_tropes_image.jpg
The Brawler - a force of nature.

After John's creation led to the deaths of his parents, the former blacksmith vowed to never again build a weapon of war. Instead, he uses his hammer to bring justice back to Middleton so that he can someday rescue his sister from the clutches of the State.

No man would dare face the mighty brawler in a close quarter combat. His sledgehammer is capable of downing some foes in a single blow, and when he activates his Wrath ability, he becomes nigh unstoppable.

  • The Berserker: John’s ultimate allows him to tank damage, use unlimited stamina and improve his offensive capabilities.
  • The Big Guy: John is the biggest outlaw in the group and the strongest.
  • The Blacksmith: John grew up and trained as a blacksmith before his own weapons led to the death of his family.
  • Damager, Healer, Tank: Little John is the tank in this group, with Tooke as the healer and Marianne, with her upgraded assassination abilities, as the Damager.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Zigzagged. John used to create weapons for the State as the pay was much better, but as he got closer to the workings of his employers he saw the corruption and harm his weapons were causing. This was one of the reasons he turned against the State.
  • Self-Made Orphan: Roundabout example — John didn't personally kill his parents, but one of his creations did. This is what motivated him to turn against the State.

    Tooke (The Mystic)

Tooke (a.k.a. The Mystic)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tooke_tropes_image.jpg
The Mystic - a former Inquistor.

Trained at a young age to become an Inquisitor, Tooke’s blind obedience to religious scripture made him easily exploited by the State. It was only until his mentor was tortured, wrongfully accused by the people he served, when he decided to rebel against the government’s iron fist.

The mystic brings divination and trickery to the battlefield. His mystical powers can detect nearby enemies, while his poisonous smoke bombs can bring unfortunate foes to their knees.

  • The Atoner: Tooke used to work within the State, torturing and interrogating its enemies. Then his mentor was killed and he turned from them.
  • Damager, Healer, Tank: The Healer - the mystic is the only class with innate healing powers in the game.
  • Jack of All Stats: The most middle range character of all the playable ones. Aside from an inability to shoot he doesn't have true weaknesses and has at least one bonus for each facet of play. Melee wise he doesn't have the penalties of Hood and Marianne even if he isn't the full on slugger John is, stealth wise he moves at a decent pace and his special can highlight enemies to make stealth gameplay easier, and as a melee he moves and turns the crank faster when extracting the chest.
  • Maybe Magic, Maybe Mundane: Tooke can see people through walls and heal his allies. Something about all of that is difficult to explain rationally...
  • Warrior Monk: Soldiers upon seeing him will call him Monk, and he is most certainly a warrior when you look at how he uses that flail.

    Eidaa (The Sellsword)

Eidaa (a.k.a The Sellsword)

An esteemed member of the elite Emiri guard, the Sellsword arrived from the east to take revenge upon the State that attacked her lands. During her hunt for the giant man who murdered her beloved lord, she found common cause with a band of outlaws led by the enigmatic Hood.

The Sellsword was the first DLC character added, and the first outlaw released as part of Season 1.

  • Canon Foreigner: Rather than be based on a figure from the original outlaws, Eidaa is inspired by the contemporary idea of adding a Token Minority Merry Men character in the form of a Moorish or Saracen outlaw who's came to England for whatever reason.
  • Damager, Healer, Tank: A Damager, as while they utilise melee attacks similar to Little John, they're not nearly as durable.
  • Fantasy Counterpart Culture: As the game's world utilises a 'fantasy' version of England that's never outright referred to as such, Eidaa is instead merely said to be an "Emiri guard". Whatever that is, she seems to be from the Middle East, and her attire and cosmetics take inspiration from various Middle Eastern cultures.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: They're a Token Minority Moorish/Saracen outlaw, similar to as Nazir, Azeem, Djaq, and John himself. As Robin Hood's public domain status means very few Robin Hood adaptations are produced by the same studios, and subsequently any original character is copyright to them, they're unable to appear in later, unrelated works. Ergo, Eidaa is a substitute for this now firmly-established but unable-to-use archetype.
  • Twofer Token Minority: A woman who's Ambiguously Brown and from Eastern-Asian-inspired country.

The State

    Sheriff Roger of Doncaster

The Sheriff (real name Roger of Doncaster)

The Sheriff is a force of nature and commands the troops of the State in their protection of their gold. He has a mysterious past and is seemingly particularly well suited to battling the outlaws. Regardless, no one can stand up to his brute strength and single minded determination.

  • Arch-Enemy: The few plot tidbits we have indicate he's this to the entirety of Hood's outlaws. Justified in that he used to be Hood, and implicitly knows many of the outlaws' tricks.
  • The Brute: The Sheriff is nigh unstoppable in combat and is the bluntest and biggest tool the State possesses against Hood.
  • Fallen Hero: Roger was once Hood himself, chosen after his predecessor retired. Now, he’s the State most powerful weapon.
