Heinous Investigations
Carlton
Beverly Carlton
- Badass in a Nice Suit: Sometimes, often in unconventional situations.
- Badass Normal: May not have the powers or abilities of the rest of the team, but he makes up for it with guile and an unhealthy level of paranoia.
- Blood Knight: Loves punching stuff and has a hard time understanding why people (especially men) wouldn’t use fighting for at least self-defense.
- Bunny-Ears Lawyer: One case where it is an actual lawyer, even if his law degree currently only amounts to filing relevant paperwork for the Investigators. He may be an overly-paranoid wannabe hero-detective, but he’s good at his job.
- Chronic Hero Syndrome: One of his biggest flaws. As much as he vocally denies it, he has a deep-seated need to be a hero that drives him to make some bad decisions.
- Create Your Own Villain: Unwittingly does this with Delia when he abandons her father’s criminal enterprise to become a legitimate lawyer.
- Cunning Linguist: Mentions offhand that he studied a bunch of languages in college, mainly because legal jargon is derived from several different languages.
- Dark and Troubled Past: To an almost outrageous degree. Miriam describes it as a modernized version of Oliver Twist.
- Deadpan Snarker: Half of his banter with Miriam consists of snark, but that isn’t to say he spares anyone else.
- Education Through Pyrotechnics: Carlton believes in this, as evidenced by his setting Rachel's (a child) Junior Investigator obstacle course on fire.
- Embarrassing First Name: Carlton's first name is Beverly. Any jokes about it come not from the name itself, but from the fact that Carlton is embarrassed about having a "girl's name".
Miriam
Miriam Prior
- Absurdly Youthful Mother: Of the Teen Pregnancy variety (she was 18 when Rachel was born).
- Action Girl: Specifically an Action Mom.
- Badass and Child Duo: With Rachel.
- Badass Normal: No powers, but the most skilled weapons expert around.
- Belligerent Sexual Tension: Part of her and Carlton’s “Will they or Won’t they?” bit.
- Berserk Button: She is a Mama Bear after all. Maybe don't threaten her daughter.
- Deadpan Snarker: Her previous life in a cult, followed by the mistreatment of her daughter because of her powers has made her a rather bitter person.
- Establishing Character Moment: Upon first meeting Carlton, she manages to drop a machete, a shuriken and a blowgun along with her groceries.
Martin
Martin Henrickson
- American Accents: Transatlantic, to the point where it’s comical. He also has a hint of Boston Brahmin on certain words or when saying his own name: "M-ah-tin".
- Badass Normal: Doesn’t have any superhuman abilities, but makes up for it with his wealth and advanced social skills.
- Beware the Nice Ones: If the first arc of Season 2 is any indication, Martin’s methods of “negotiation” can turn dark very quickly.
- Cloudcuckoolander's Minder: Is this for the Investigators in general.
- Cultured Badass: Usually understated, but as mentioned above, you do not want to get on his bad side.
- Eccentric Millionaire: Agrees to fund a paranormal investigation agency full of dysfunctional people without skipping a beat…although, living in Hanesbury makes the whole thing seem a bit more justified.
- Old Money: Of the Boston Brahmin variety.
- Only Sane Man: Considering who he shares his home with, this is a given. Though he has his moments of kookiness too.
- Signature Headgear: Is seen in all promotional artwork thus far wearing a straw boater.
- Socialite: He is a master of diplomacy; hence his importance to the team, which is mostly made up of socially-defunct people.
- Spoiled Sweet: He comes from privilege, but due to his family’s fondness for Hanesbury and its people, he uses his money and influence for good.
- The Team Benefactor: There would be no Heinous Investigations without his crazy huge fortune to back it up.
Liza
Liza
- Action Girl
- Affectionate Nickname: She is called “Miss Liza” by a few people, but Elliot takes it to a whole new level of fondness.
- Beware the Nice Ones: She is a lot more threatening than she appears to be.
- Competition Freak: An absolute menace when it comes to anything even remotely competitive.
Ginnie
Virginia "Ginnie" Kelly
- Action Girl
- Beware the Nice Ones: She may seem sweet and all-loving at first, but she will not hesitate to attack anyone if they pose a threat. Or underestimate her.
- Conditioned to Accept Horror: Treats the incredibly gruesome story of her birth with a sort of perky nonchalance.
- Cute Little Fangs: As a cutesy Vampire, Ginnie has these.
- Girly Girl: Loves Love, the Color Pink and generally is among the more empathetic Investigators.
Orville
Orville
- Abhorrent Admirer: Lavinia Lavin is very much his.
- Badass Bookworm: Well read and arguably the most powerful member of the Investigators.
- Badass Longcoat: Is almost never without it.
- Berserk Button: DON’T CALL HIM CREEPY. Also, threatening/insulting Ginnie will get him on the edge of homicidal.
- Beware the Nice Ones: Usually as agreeable as somebody in his situation can be, but if you cross Orville, expect a psychic beatdown.
- Blessed with Suck: Has crazy awesome powers, but can never express himself like most people.
- Brooding Boy, Gentle Girl: With Ginnie.
- Comes Great Responsibility: He subscribes to this more than his fellow Investigators, as his abilities have a tendency to get “out of hand” if he doesn’t keep his emotions in check.
- The Comically Serious: Due to his being The Stoic, any time he underwhelmingly reacts to something outlandish and/or infuriating will certainly garner some laughs.
- Creepy Monotone: Almost exclusively speaks in this.
Jack
Jack Graham
- Aesop Amnesia: Just when you think him and his brother have learned to swallow their pride and get along, they...well...don’t.
- Big Brother Instinct: For all of the time he spends complaining about Algernon, Jack always has his best interests at heart and cares deeply for him.
- The Dutiful Son: He takes care of his, and Algernon's needs.
- Enraged by Idiocy: Putting up with Algy for 26 years will do this to you.
- The Finicky One: Yes, although mainly when it comes to Algy.
- Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: Responsible to Algy’s Foolish.
- Sibling Rivalry: His need to prove Algy wrong leads to him making some pretty bad decisions at times, including accepting literally any dare posed to him. He starts to get over that aspect early on, but he still has his moments.
Algy
Algernon "Algy" Graham
- Aesop Amnesia: Just when you think him and his brother have learned to swallow their pride and get along, they...well...don't.
- Annoying Younger Sibling: To Jack, so very much, in spite of the age gap only being about 15 minutes.
- Badass Biker: He’s got a motorcycle. Good enough.
- Big Eater: Due to his incredibly fast metabolism, Algy eats A LOT.
- Comically Missing the Point: Due to his more selfish tendencies, he tends to miss the boat on a few basic concepts of human decency.
- Crazy Jealous Guy: When Algy hears about his ex Vera’s “perfect” finance...Jealous? Check. Crazy? BIG CHECK.
- Dirty Coward: At his worst.
- Establishing Character Moment: Algy drenches Carlton and Jack by driving his motorcycle straight through a puddle, and then immediately goes to the only bar in the area and hits on Ginnie.
- Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: Foolish to Jack’s Responsible.
Elliot
Dr. Elliot Quaid
Click here to see him with Sylas
- Badass Bookworm: Elliot loves to read and assist Frank in his lab work , while Sy can easily and gleefully kick ass when called on in a fight.
- Badass Pacifist: Elliot prefers to use his wits to deal with treacherous situations. As a demon on then other hand...
- Be Yourself: Struggles with this idea more than anyone else in Heinous Investigations. Considering that his “self” includes a literal demon, the struggle is understandable.
- Berserk Button: If you want to end your life quickly, feel free to hurt Liza in front of him.
Frank
Franklin Niccolai "Frank" Epstein III
- Absent-Minded Professor: Fits this to a T.
- Agent Mulder: Believes a hell of a lot of stuff (such as the existence of Yetis and Santa Claus) readily, and questions why his teammates, in their line of work, don’t do the same.
- Attention Deficit... Ooh, Shiny!: In spades!
- Badass Normal: He builds things that can kick ass just as quickly as any of his superpowered teammates.
- Berserk Button: Anything relating to CR-3TR or his past. Also, if anyone so much as looks at Benji the wrong way, they can expect to incur his wrath.
- Beware the Silly Ones: He comes across as a loony scientist Manchild who wouldn’t hurt a fly…at first...
- Big Brother Instinct: For Benji, big time.
Rachel
Rachel Prior
- Adorably Precocious Child
- The Baby of the Bunch: The younger of the “Junior Investigators” and therefore the Investigators in general.
- Cheerful Child
- Child Prodigy: When it comes to her powers.
- Children Raise You: In that sometimes she sees things more clearly and straightforwardly than the adults in her life.
- Children Are Special: Very special.
- Does Not Know Her Own Strength: Doesn’t totally understand her powers, and thus isn’t the best at pulling them back.
Benji
Benjamin "Benji" Epstein
- Adorably Precocious Child: Nine years old at the series’ start, but very well spoken.
- Annoying Younger Sibling: Subverted in that Frank thinks Benji can do no wrong.
- Child Prodigy: Is almost definitely smarter than his brother, and Frank couldn’t be prouder.
- Complexity Addiction: His least rational quality.
- Constantly Curious
- Red Oni, Blue Oni: Blue to Frank’s Red.
- The Prankster: Had a reputation as this at his old boarding school. He took advantage of this in an attempt to get himself expelled.
