The Tendo Dojo

    Ranma Saotome

  • Adaptational Relationship Overhaul: With Nabiki. As a result of Akane not being Ranma's fiance and main Love Interest, there is a lot less vitriol between him and Nabiki, as she is considerably nicer to him than Akane was at the beginning of the series and they are also surprisingly compatible with each other. In canon, particularly when she was briefly engaged to him, Nabiki exploited Ranma for profit and often played with his feelings. Here, she's more respectful, doesn't take advantage of him, and the flirting is genuine.
  • Birds of a Feather: He's unexpectedly well-suited to Nabiki, having flexible morals about money and a rather tricksterish mindset.
  • Perfectly Arranged Marriage: Being engaged to Nabiki is a much more smooth-sailing venture than his canon betrothal with Akane as the second Tendo girl waits for him to explain before hitting.
  • Shrinking Violet: His early interactions with the Tendo family are positively shy as he's far out of his usual depths and anxious about making a bad impression. He grows bolder and more confident as he gets more familiar with Nerima.
  • Through His Stomach: He was more inclined to think good of Kodachi and Shampoo when they cooked a delicious meal for him.

    Nabiki Tendo

  • Adaptational Nice Guy: While she retains her greed and manipulative traits, Nabiki is a lot nicer compared to her canon Comedic Sociopath personality.
  • Big Eater: Ranma is amazed when he goes on a date with her at Burger King and watches the dainty schoolgirl polish three burgers (each with fries) on her own.
  • Birds of a Feather: Ranma is just as pragmatic about money and gluttonous as her.
  • Everyone Has Standards: She snarks about possibly loaning Ranma to Kodachi, but is utterly horrified when the other girl actually gives her the money. Nabiki also refuses to take pictures of her fiancé's female form and sell them, seeing it as a betrayal.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: She's charmed by Ranma's shyness when they are introduced to each other, and cannot help but enjoy when he jumps to defend her name and honor.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: She's very mercenary and pragmatic when interacting with her fellows at school, but noticeably mellows around her family.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Genma trains her on the basis of martial arts for the fight against the Golden Pairing.
  • Understanding Boyfriend: She's understandably floored when Ranma first shifts into female form in front of her but quickly decides it doesn't really matter and accepts Ranma as her fiancé who happens to swap genders once in a while.

    Akane Tendo

  • Big Sister Instinct: Inverted as she's the youngest daughter. Akane doesn't like when she believes Ranma is less than faithful to her sister, and she outright joined Soun in unleashing the whoop-ass against Genma when the man chased Nabiki with a whip in the name of training.
  • Obnoxious In-Laws: She's bent on believing the worst of Ranma, mainly out of wounded pride over him being better than her at Martial Arts. Their relationship would improve if she apologized, but Word of God admitted it was very unlikely to happen.
  • Pet the Dog: When Ranma defies Kuno to put an end to the Hentai Horde, she genuinely thanks him and manages to see he wants to impress her sister.

    Kasumi Tendo

  • Berserk Button: Very downplayed because its's Kasumi, but Shampoo slightly annoys her when the Chinese Amazon tries to do chores around the house.
  • Nice Gal: As per usual, she is the nicest member of her family.

    Soun Tendo

  • Papa Wolf: He's not alright with Genma being a Drill Sergeant Nasty to Nabiki, and outright chased him in the streets in full samurai battle armor for trying to whip his daughter.
  • Parents as People: He does genuinely and deeply love his daughters, but he lets slip a hint of patriarchal condescension sometimes.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: He checked that Nabiki genuinely wanted to give a chance to Ranma before picking her as the bride. He also tells Akane that Ranma beat her fair and square when she gets pissed over his victory.
  • Serious Business: Martial Arts. He sternly rebukes Akane for refusing to accept her defeat at the hands of a genuinely more skilled Ranma and agrees for Nabiki to drop school for a week when she's training for the ice-skating contest against the Golden Pairing.
  • Trauma Button: He faints when he meets Cologne because he thinks she's Happosai.

    Genma Saotome

  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: A Fat Bastard who lazes around and has very dubious morals, but is skilled enough as a teacher to turn Nabiki into a semi-competent fighter for the ice-skating contest. In a single week.
  • Drill Sergeant Nasty: When he decides to train Nabiki for the duel against the Golden Pairing, his methods involve throwing her in the pond at dawn to wake her up and chasing her around with a bullwhip to improve her swiftness.

The Kuno family

    Tatewaki Kuno

  • Dumbass Has a Point:
    • When he asks for an explanation for why he was beaten by a girl when he was fighting Ranma, everybody agrees he deserves one. And his refusal to first believe in the Jusenkyo curse is justified by the fact that it's magic, and people in the modern era struggle a lot to accept the possibility of it.
    • He bluntly tells Ryoga to stop complaining about Ranma not waiting for the lost boy to find his way to their duel, pointing out that being late one hour is grounds for a lawful loss and no referee in Japan will ever side with Ryoga on the matter.
  • The Rival: Poised to become a much more serious one to Ranma than in canon, since he started to earnestly work on improving his skill.
  • Secret-Keeper: Rather ironically, he's aware of Ranma being a Sex Shifter when their duel ended up with the martial artist swapping genders in front of him.

    Kodachi Kuno

  • Bait the Dog: When she "buys" Ranma for a date in her home, she's actually quite sweet and nice, leading Ranma to think she might not be so bad if a mite silly — then she forces him to wrestle with her pet crocodile. He permanently slots her in the "crazy, just nope" category after that.
  • Foreign Culture Fetish: When she serves French dishes to Ranma for their date, she confesses she can prepare Japanese food but she personally believes French cooking is special.

Chinese Amazons

    Shampoo

  • If It's You, It's Okay: Shampoo is very deeply attracted to Ranma as a male, but has no qualms cuddling his female form or Nabiki since they're her spouses.
  • I Owe You My Life: Because Nabiki prevented her from committing a crime by explaining Ranma's Jusenkyo curse, Shampoo decides to honor her by marrying both Nabiki and Ranma.
  • Ms. Exposition: After adding Ukyo to the harem, Shampoo is asked to explain the Exotic Extended Marriage, which her culture believes ensures there won't be misunderstandings anymore.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: After watching Kuno while he trains, she gives him some pointers to improve and accidentally puts him on the road to becoming a genuine rival to Ranma.
