Protagonists
The Boyfriend trio
Beta Boyfriend, Blue Boyfriend, and Mean Boyfriend - three rappers who are friends with one goal in mind: 1-UP each other in out-rapping their opponents for the right to date Girlfriend. Before entering a week in Story Mode or a song in Freeplay, you get to choose between them.
Tropes regarding the trio as a whole
- Cock Fight: Their rivalry over who gets to date Girlfriend is pretty much half the plot of Minus.
- Color-Coded Characters:
- Beta - Yellow
- Blue - Blue
- Mean - Red
- Decomposite Character: The Boyfriends themselves are based on canon Boyfriend's icons throughout the game's development and do share some personality traits with him. Mean BF is based on the earliest known icons seen in an image file within the game but currently hasn't been hinted or mentioned to have any traits from Boyfriend, Beta BF is based on Boyfriend's old icon and has similar "history" with Pico, and Blue BF is based on his current icon and resembles him the most.
- Fearless Fool: Like with the canon Boyfriend, these three are extremely dumbnote and are unfazed by even the most dangerous threats. Although, Beta and Blue still have a Fear of Thunder.
- Groin Attack: If you fail a song, then the Boyfriend you're currently playing as gets blueballed so hard that his entire skeleton fractures.
- Idiot Hero: All three of them are idiots, but they serve the same role as Boyfriend in the vanilla game.
- Older Than They Look: Due to the chibi art style of their sprites, they look pre-pubescent despite being around 19 to 20 years oldnote . Like with Boyfriend in the original game, their sprites don't reflect their canon heights.
- Vitriolic Best Buds: According to Word of God, they are stated to be friends when they aren't fighting over Girlfriend.
Beta Boyfriend
Voiced by: VaChildish
The first of the three to be introduced. Beta Boyfriend is based on the original yellow-colored icon that was (and still is) in the game.- Barbie Doll Anatomy: Downplayed. He goes completely bare-chested, yet has no visible nipples. However, he's still shown with balls if you fail a song as him.
- Interspecies Romance: Aside from Girlfriend (demon), he seems to have had a similar relationship with Pico (lizard) as their canon counterparts.
- Potty Failure: Stated by Word of God to have once shat his pants in the 5th grade, though they never went into detail on the incident.
- Sphere Eyes: Type 2, in contrast to Blue and Mean's Black Bead Eyes.
- V-Sign: Subverted, as he throws the Shaka sign instead of a v-pose to the camera when prompted.
Blue Boyfriend (Idiot)
Voiced by: MeepMemez
Introduced in Version 2.0 alongside Mean Boyfriend. Blue Boyfriend is based on Boyfriend's current blue icon, hence his name. He's sometimes referred to by the devs as "Idiot" or "Idiot Boyfriend".- Blue Is Heroic: Is primarily blue and is one of the playable Boyfriends.
- Likes Older Women: Downplayed. He loves Girlfriend despite the fact that he's one year younger than her.
- Meaningful Name: He's named Blue Boyfriend because he's...well, blue.
- Triangle Shades: Concept art for his Christmas outfit as seen on Twitter depicts Blue Boyfriend wearing a pair of these.
Mean Boyfriend
Voiced by: JordopriceVA
Unlike the other two Boyfriends, he's not designed by LagoAnims or AshGray_Art. Instead, he's based on the winning design of an art contest by DevilHare. Mean Boyfriend is actually based on an unused set of icons for Boyfriend found in an image file entitled "graphix.png". A former rapper who used to hang out with The Notorious B.I.G., his competition over Girlfriend with the other Boyfriends has given him a chance to pick the microphone back up and return to his singing career, although his skills might be a bit rusty.- Bones Do Not Belong There: Looking at his skeleton in the Game Over screen shows that there's a bone placed inside the brim of his cap...for whatever reason.
- Bruiser with a Soft Center: Is stated by Word of God to be this.
- Cool Shades: Spontaneously gains a pair of these in his right pose.
- Disapproving Look: He is the only one of the three who doesn't have a Fear of Thunder. Instead of shuddering when thunder strikes in Week 2, he simply rolls his eyes with an unamused look.
- Interspecies Friendship: He used to be friends with Pico, an anthropomorphic lizard.
- Non-Nude Bathing: He apparently takes showers with his jacket on.
- Only Sane by Comparison: While still a moron, he is the least stupid compared to the other Boyfriends.
- Red Is Heroic: He's clad in red and is one of the playable Boyfriends.
- Retired Badass: He actually used to be a rapper, and it's safe to say that while the reason why he initially retired is still left unexplained, he's still got his singing skills when the ongoing Cock Fight brings him right back to rapping.
- Sir Swears-a-Lot: According to Word of God, he swears all the time.
Girlfriend
Voiced by: cheebsva
The Boyfriends' love interest: a British goth girl whom all three of them are having the friendly rapping competition over. She is often referred to by the devs as Goth Girlfriend.- Adaptational Wimp: Compared to her canon self, who only has a Fear of Thunder, she's shown holding on to her speakers for dear life in Week 4.
- Perky Goth: Even though she's a goth, she is always happy and cheerful.
- Pink Means Feminine: She's primarily crimson pink.
- Stocking Filler: Wears fishnet stockings.
Opponents
Daddy Dearest
Voiced by: Tom Hart Jr. (RecD)
Girlfriend's father. He is often referred to as Ex-Rockstar by the devs.- Hidden Eyes: A rather unique variant of this trope. When he isn't singing, his pupils are completely hidden.
- Red Eyes, Take Warning: More like Yellow Eyes, Take Warning. He has yellow pupils that gleam in his singing animations.
Skid and Pump
Voiced by: namesaplenty07 (Skid only)
A skeletal Blob Monster and his pumpkin-headed puppet.- Blob Monster: Downplayed. Skid's body is a black, gooey mass while he rest of it is gray and solid.
- Stealth Pun: Pump is a puppet that Skid moves around.
Monster/William
Voiced by: Tristan Mullins
Skid's father: a black, nightmarish Humanoid Abomination with a yellow, lemon-shaped head. He was introduced in Version 2.0. Sometimes referred to as Lemon Demon by the devs.- Institutional Apparel: Wears a torn-up and bloodied straightjacket.
Pico
Voiced by: Cougar MacDowall
Often referred to by the mod's developers as Dino Pico, and for good reason. He's an anthropomorphic reptile - maybe a lizard - who wears a green dinosaur costume. He was added into the mod in Version 1.5.- Green and Mean: He has green skin and hair, he wears a green dino costume, and he's one of the opponents the Boyfriends must face.
- Interspecies Friendship: He was once friends with Mean Boyfriend, who is a human.
- Interspecies Romance: May have had a similar relationship with Beta Boyfriend (human) as both of their canon counterparts.
- Lizard Folk: Pico does have some reptilian features, including sharp fangs and a forked tongue, and may as well be a member of this.
Mommy Mearest
Voiced by: milkypossum
Girlfriend's mother. One of the biggest additions to Version 2.0, she is sometimes called Rider Mommy by the development team.- Pink Means Feminine: Has pink skin.
- Red Eyes, Take Warning: Like with Daddy Dearest, she has gleaming, yellow pupils, but unlike him, they aren't hidden when she isn't singing.
