Nobody had expected the depression, not in the cities nor in the rolling hills of Italy. Throughout the world people stood complacent as they believed truly in their hearts that capitalism would hold steady. It did not, and in San Marino the pains were felt sharper than in any of the lands around it. Its economy was based on tourism and free trade, and as the tourists dried up and the stamp collectors drifted away, San Marino was left with nothing. Yet in 2009, there was hope from the Free Party, or Libera Partito, which promised a new beginning based on the niche political thought of George Orwell and his book 1984. The party surged through the electoral process and gained a supermajority in the economically decimated country. Since 2009, the nation has changed rapidly for the better, at least, as much as outside observers can approximate. Economically it has recovered, although it trades no goods with other nations, it has managed to develop a thriving internal economy.
However, as the country closed off its borders entirely in 2011, and from 2012 there has been no contact with anybody in the nation, these accounts are primarily from minimally trustworthy sources at best. In recent years a giant border wall has been under construction using funds from God knows where, however the process has taken years and still has yet to bear fruit other then disrupting the landscape. The last successful escape in 2018 however painted a horrific image, state enforced breeding pens for women, mass line factories with thousands of human trafficked slaves creating drugs and weapons, all under the eyes of the “Great Friend”, who goes by no other name.
