Heroes of Mayana

Prince Tio

That's totally not Nobita with a ponytail. Really,
The prince of a Mayan kingdom and Nobita's look-alike. He sought to defeat Ledina to bring back his mother who was cursed into an eternal sleep by the sorceress.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Just when Ledina is about to kill Nobita, he arrives at her palace and reveals himself as the real prince.
  • Brutal Honesty: Well, to be fair, it's his first time meeting Nobita's friends while posing as the latter (whilst Nobita is in Mayana and enjoying life as a Prince.... right until he gets to experience training from Ishmal) the moment he hears Gian singing, he straight-up tells him, "Stop, it's horrible!"
  • Character Development: Starts off as a spoiled, violent-prone prince who responds to everything with his fists and by yelling at everyone. Mellows out after meeting Nobita, starts seeing the value of friendship, and slowly turns for the better, right up to demanding Ledina to sacrifice him in exchange for Kuku and Nobita's life.
  • Defrosting Ice King: He starts as a Royal Brat, but learning about friendship from Nobita turns him nicer.
  • The Determinator: He embarks on a quest, all by himself to save Kuku from Ledina's clutches. And when he gets abducted by Yahoo's vultures halfway through and separated from Nobita and his new band of friends, he continues solo all the way to Ledina's hideout.
  • Fish out of Water: When he arrives in Tokyo and starts seeing technology for the first time. For starters, the Prince mistakens a Magic Show on television to be a demonstration of Ledina's dark powers and nearly destroyed the TV in Nobita's house until Doraemon restrains him.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: Early into the story, he literally hollers at everything and everyone, including scaring off Shizuka (who's oblivious that he's in Nobita's place) and later trying to raise his voice at Tamako (which... didn't end well).
  • Heroic Sacrifice: He offers to sacrifice himself to Ledina in exchange for Nobita to be spared, as Nobita had given him the chance to gain friends and learn how to be a better person.
  • Identical Stranger: Is an exact duplicate of Nobita, for reasons unknown since the Prince hails from a faraway kingdom based on ancient Aztecs while Nobita is a teenager in modern-day Japan.
  • Jerkass Realization: Triggered when Shizuka (who thought he was Nobita at the time) tells him she'll hate him if he kept acting mean. This comes back to him when he yells at Kuku and makes her cry.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Despite his haughty demenour as a Prince, deep down he really cares for his friends and subjects. Meeting Doraemon and Nobita finally brings out the true goodness in him.
  • Official Couple: Ends up with Kuku at the end of the story.
  • Purely Aesthetic Glasses: Wears these while disguised as Nobita in Tokyo.
  • Royal Brat: He was like this early in the story, but he gets better. Though his upbringing from an overly-strict royal family and the responsibility of leading his people after Ledina cursed his mother may have something to do with it.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: He gradually softens up and becomes nicer after making lifelong friends with Nobita and gang.
  • Trademark Favourite Food: The Prince seems to have developed a craving for ramen after trying it for the first time.
  • Warrior Prince: By the end of the story.

Poporu

Popo-ru...

A large, pink jerboa-kangaroo creature who is Tio's pet and loyal companion. Named after the sound he makes.
  • All Animals Are Dogs: Some of his behavior is dog-like, particularly following Tio's orders and licking a person on the face.
  • Amazing Technicolor Wildlife: He has pink fur, which is justified in that he's an alien creature.
  • Mix-and-Match Critter: He resembles a jerboa with the pouch of a kangaroo.
  • Pokémon Speak: He can only say his name.
  • Ridiculously Cute Critter: Just imagine a pink jerboa grown to the size of a football.
  • Rodents of Unusual Size: Looks like a jerboa grown to the size of a cat.
  • Sticky Fingers: When he first arrives on Earth, Poporu swipes a few things from Nobita's room, namely his manga and 0-scored tests. It's also shown he had taken some things in Mayana and stored them in a hiding place, much like a packrat.
  • Undying Loyalty: He never leaves Tio's side.
  • Visual Pun: A jumping rodent-like creature with a pouch. Or a kangaroo-rat.

Kuku

"There are two Princes?"

Tio's personal maid and childhood friend. Mistakens Nobita as her prince for their similar looks. She serves as Tio's Morality Pet, Damsel in Distress, and his love interest.
  • Damsel in Distress: Gets kidnapped by Ledina's minions, forcing a guilty Prince Tio to go on a solo rescue mission which is later joined by Ishmal, Nobita, Doraemon and gang.
  • Nice Girl: Probably the nicest and friendliest character in the story, even being kind to Prince Tio despite him behaving like a jerk towards her.
  • Official Couple: She becomes a couple with Prince Tio at the conclusion of the adventure.
  • Ship Tease: With Nobita. She even admitted that she liked him when she found out the truth about Nobita and Prince Tio switching places with each other.

Ishmal

"Since when did the Prince become such a wimp?"
Kuku's father and Tio's battle tutor. Goes with Tio and the gang after learning about his daughter's kidnapping. Also becomes a tutor for Gian, who gains respect for him.
  • Disney Death: He seemingly falls to his death while trying to escape from a snake pit. However, he survives and arrives just in time to help Gian defeat Coatl.
  • The Mentor: To Prince Tio, and then to Gian.
  • Papa Wolf: He's extremely protective towards his daughter, Kuku.
  • Veteran Instructor: A capable soldier of the Mayana army, and their lead instructor in the battlegrounds.

Takao and Moka

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/2_guys.PNG
After getting their butts handed back to them by Tio and Nobita during the football match.
Two Mayana warriors-in-training often seen together.
  • Big Guy, Little Guy: The big guy is Takao. The shorter one is Moka.
  • Satellite Character: All their onscreen characterizations are their interactions with Prince Tio. Also they sort of just dissappears halfway into the story until the very ending where the Mayana army - Takao and Moka included - shows up at Ledina's pyramid.
  • Those Two Guys: They're always seen together.

Ledina and her cronies

Ledina

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ladina.jpg
An evil sorceress who cursed the Kingdom of Mayana in the past, puts the kingdom's queen and Tio's mother into a Deep Sleep, and wants to use Tio as a human sacrifice in a ritual for preserving her immortality.

Animal Master / "Yahoo"

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yahoo.PNG
"...wait, there are two princes?"
The first of three minions of Ledina. An animal-controlling villain who abducts Kuku for his master.
  • The Beastmaster: Like his namesake, he can control animals, sending vultures to attack the heroes while they're crossing the jungle and later personally rides a giant crocodile into battle.
  • Never Smile at a Crocodile: Yahoo’s personal steed is a kaiju crocodile, he’s larger than most boats, and intimidating with his immense size. The animal master commands this giant croc to devour the heroes. But unfortunately Doraemon finds Super Balloon Gum and throws the whole pack into the crocodile's jaws, making the crocodile swell up like a balloon and float up into the stratosphere, carrying Yahoo with him, to the animal master’ horror.
  • Nemean Skinning: He wears a hooded cloak made from a leopard's pelt.
  • Odd Name Out: His colleagues, Quetzalcoatl and Coatl, have Aztec-sounding names. On the other hand, the Animal Master is called... Yahoo?
  • Starter Villain: The first of the major villains to be defeated, and in a rather comical way too.

Yahoo’s Steed / Uga

Yahoo’s personal steed to travel from place to place.

Medicine Master / Quetzalcoatl

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/quets.PNG
"You're seeing things that can hurt you."
The second of Ledina's cronies, whose drugs can cause bizarre illusions when spread through the air. He lays out a trap for Nobita and gang at the entrance of his boss' pyramid lair, but Doraemon himself have some nifty gadgets up his sleeve to counter his illusions.
  • Depraved Dwarf: The shortest of the three minions, but easily the most dangerous due to his illusions confusing his potential victims.
  • Glamour Failure: When Quetzalcoatl's monsters began pursuing the heroes, a desperate Gian hurls his spear... and it phases harmlessly into the nearby monster, unbroken. And then a random gust of wind causes the monsters to suffer Hologram Projection Imperfection causing Doraemon to realize something is amiss.
  • A Handful for an Eye: In the manga he repeatedly tries to sic his illusions on Doraemon and the heroes, until Doraemon decides to counter-attack by giving an RC-squid capable of shooting ink to Suneo, and Suneo managed to take Quetzalcoatl down by blasting a gallon of ink into his face. The anime adaptation uses a Pepper Sneeze instead.
  • Master of Illusion: His specialty, where the drugs he creates can cause anyone who sniffs them believe they're seeing gigantic monsters.
  • Your Mind Makes It Real: His illusions work on this principle. The illusory monsters Quetzalcoatl summons can hurt the victims who believes in their existence, until they refuse to believe and pretend the monsters didn't exist, at which point they disappear instantly.

Spear Master / Coatl

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/coatl.jpg
The third of Ledina's cronies, an expert warrior who wields two spears at once.
  • Badass Normal: Unlike the other two minions of Ledina, Coatl's sole weapons are his spears, and that's already enough for him to be a formidable foe and a deadly challenge for the heroes.
  • Bodyguarding a Badass: He's Ledina's personal guard, serving an all-powerful sorceress whose magic cursed an entire kingdom.
  • Dual Wielding: He favours dual spears with stone shafts against his opponents, and gives Gian a difficult fight in the climax with Gian holding Coatl down so the others can go for Ledina. Later on Ishmal reappears, revealed to have survived his fall down the river, and easily takes down Coatl.
  • The Brute: He's the largest and strongest of the Terrible Trio.
  • The Faceless: His face underneath that mask is never revealed.
  • Malevolent Masked Men: He wears a sinister tribal mask in both the manga and anime, which stays on for the entirety of his screentime.
  • The Voiceless: The only one of the three minions who doesn't have any dialogue, save for grunting and roaring when he fights Gian and Ishmal.
