The Protagonists

    In General
  • Freudian Trio: Subverted; Hato does look to be the Id, Naruaki the Superego, and Otoji the Ego. However, Hato does show a logical side to himself and Naruaki does show emotional depth.
  • Mirror Self: If whether being the Persona or the Persona User is the mirror, of course. Otoji, Naruaki, and Hato are this to Orpheus, Izanagi, and Arsene respectively.

"I didn't know I wasn't the only one..."

Arcana: The Fool
Personas: Messiah Anima (Makoto Yuki), Messiah Venus (Kotone Shiomi)
Weapon: One-handed Sword (Can also dual wield.)

Otoji Arisato is the first and main protagonist of the story to be introduced. On January 12th, 2019, his girlfriend, Aiko Shiomi, has succumbed to her injuries following a brutal hit and run incident and, as a result, died in the hospital in the midst of keeping her stable; Otoji being in the same room as her. Within that same month, he has started to experience recurring dreams of another world; a vision of Makoto Yuki's awakening to Orpheus from the perspective of the latter. These dreams kept appearing to him for months, even into the start of the next school year. Having the weight of grief and dreams he couldn't understand upon him, Otoji would face the future with uncertainty and regrets.

Upon gathering with Naruaki and Hato alongside entering the Mirror World for the first time, Otoji would form a Mirror Link with Orpheus and awaken to Messiah Anima. Over the course of the yet-to-be-written story, he would learn to healthily cope with his grief. Alongside this, he would form a Mirror Link with Orpheus (F), the Mirror of the late Aiko, and awaken to Messiah Venus due to the intended user being deceased.

  • Cope by Creating: Not even the greatest loss of his life could take away his passion for music; this is one of the few ways he could vent his grief. On his best days, it helps get some of it off his chest enough for him to carry on through the rest of the day. However, he does have his worst days...
  • Cowardly Lion: Justified, especially at the start of the story. Death is a scary thing, especially after having to deal with having lost someone really close to him. But, once he was given the opportunity to prevent both himself and his friends from dying, he makes use of it. While he still experiences fear or the occasional post-battle shutdown (the latter occurring more often during the start of the story), that doesn't stop him from joining the fight.
  • Moving Beyond Bereavement: Aiko is the Eurydice to Otoji's Orpheus; her death had significantly impacted him and drained him of any light he had. He had very little outlets in terms of his grief and it became hard for him to stop focusing on the past. It was to the extent that his friends were his only anchor and his reminder that he still had people. This trope is the goal of his personal character arc; a significant difference compared to his mythological counterpart.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Averted; while Otoji is the overall protagonist, the red color of his eyes is shared with and is a reference to his Mirror.
  • Signature Instrument: As to be expected of the Mirror of Orpheus, Otoji has experience across many different stringed instruments... Including pianos. He can easily learn any instrument with strings and play them without much difficulty.

"Now that I know that we're together in this... I feel more strongly about finding the reason behind it all."

Arcana: Judgement
Personas: Seeker (Yu Narukami)
Weapon: Katana

Naruaki Seta is the second protagonist of the story to be introduced. He is the senior to both Otoji and Hato as he a third year in school. Hardworking and overworking, Naruaki makes his best attempts to stay at the top of his class academically... Even if it comes at the cost of his sleep schedule. Having lacked parental presence for most of his life, the only way he felt was the right way to form connections was to be a good role model. The more good things he does and the more achievements he gets, the more he'll be recognized. Naruaki met Otoji when he was in his second year and the other in his first. Since then, the two began to mingle and eventually form a friendship... Something that surprised Naruaki due to how easily they connected.

Much like Otoji and Hato, he's had his own recurring dreams. When the three eventually get together to solve the mystery behind them, Naruaki finds himself and his companions caught in a much bigger ordeal than any of them expected. With Seeker by his side, he aims to do his best to help out when he can in the Mirror World... All the while discovering himself and learning that he doesn't have to be perfect in order to have friends.

  • Jack of All Trades: As a well-rounded person both in academics and combat, he's able to cover for the majority of his friends and other potential teammates. This even extends to his Persona, Seeker, who can act both on the front-line and as support.
  • Sensor Character: Naruaki acts the first and overall primary navigator thanks to Seeker's abilities in Navi Focus complete with Enemy Scan and Mission Control. Anything regarding navigation is done through the tome Seeker would summon upon entering Navi Focus.
  • Specs of Awesome: A trait inherited from his Reflection, Yu. While Naruaki's glasses are corrective, they don't stop him from doing his thing as a Persona User. Seeker also sports them.

"We're in this together now, so we can watch each other's backs."

Arcana: The Magician
Personas: Phantom (Ren Amamiya)
Weapon: Dagger (Can also dual wield.)

Hato Kurusu is the third protagonist of the story to be introduced. He is both a neighbor and classmate to Otoji alongside being a part-time barista at the town's local cafe. While he is prone to causing a fight, he doesn't do it just for kicks. Hato knows his morals; he fights to make sure anyone who is threatened is protected. With both his strength and his will, he will step in if it means that someone who doesn't deserve it doesn't get hurt. It's a cruel world out there and not everyone has that kind of courage. Someone has to be a catalyst for change... A role Hato gladly takes on. Beyond the fights, however, he's a charming individual with a knack for memes and mischief. He has a good heart and knows when to provide comfort should the need call for it.

Much like Otoji and Naruaki, he's had his own recurring dreams. He goes to the former first and meets the latter for the first time that same day. Together, they wander into the Mirror World for answers... And they get more than they bargained for. With a great journey ahead of him with bumps and battles along the way, Hato takes up arms alongside Phantom to make sure the fight for the Mirror World is won... All the while practicing self-restraint along the way. Not everything is solved with fists, after all.

  • Big Brother Instinct: Downplayed and Defied, as mentioned on the AU's Tumblr. Nozomu Kurusu is Hato's younger brother, being in elementary school when the plot begins. The elder of the two loves the other to bits and is quite the inspiration for the younger one. When Nozomu also winds up in the ordeal as the Mirror of Zorro, Hato is understandably mad due to the fact that he's really, really young and something like the ordeal would be overwhelming. Regardless, he's still his brother, so Hato does what he can to teach Nozomu his way around a fight so that he can both protect himself and help protect others.
Hato: There’s only so much I can do; I gotta have his back. Besides... He's one tough cookie.
  • Code Name: Invoked on the Tumblr Blog; Hato's codename as a phantom thief is Scarlet due to the amount of red his attire takes on.
  • Dragged by the Collar: In the arm variant, Hato almost invokes this in Chapter 21 on the Mirror World's Lavenza before being stopped by Otoji.
  • Improvised Weapon: During Chapters 14 and 15, the moment in the story where Hato awakens to Phantom, he makes use of a random pipe wrench he found in the decrepit ruins he and Otoji found themselves in.
  • Sir Swears-a-Lot: Downplayed. While there are many instances of Hato swearing, they aren't often or close together in timing. But that doesn't mean he's immune to dropping a Cluster F-Bomb. Or, in the case of Chapter 14, a Cluster S-Bomb.
Hato: SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT-!
