The Main Trio

    Luka Vanhorn

Luka

A thoughtful deer kid who's the main hero of the story. He was orphaned several years ago and now lives with his grandmother, although he dreams of someday finding his mysteriously disappeared mother.

  • Adorably Precocious Child: He knows the word "ponder", and suggests to his grandmother that it is what he and Rolo will do that day. (He assures her, however, that they will ponder mostly "medium" issues.)
  • Action Survivor: He is a preteen with no height or muscle to speak of, but he can escape the killer dragging him off by stabbing him with a loose tile and taking advantage of his distraction to run.
  • Orphan's Ordeal: Luka knows his dad is dead- in fact, the story starts with him visiting his grave. He refuses to believe his mother is the same, which bullies mock him for.
  • Stepford Smiler: Type A. The death of his dad and his mom's disappearance is hitting him hard, and the weird goings on around town aren't helping.

    Rolo Cotter

Rolo

A fearless ginger cat the same age as Luka, who's been friends with him a long time. When Rolo notices the town warehouse has begun glowing, he suggests they go investigate it, in the most recent of many impulsive decisions he's made.

  • Big Fun: Is a large kid compared to his friends and very friendly, if a little dimwitted.
  • The Big Guy: A lot more husky than his more average sized friends. Later exaggerated somewhat after he is force fed some of the more refined chemicals from Perennial Harvest, resulting in him growing into an adult while his friends are still preteens.
  • The Champion: He would die for Luka. And he does in certain routes, most notably luring the killer away so Luka can escape. There's no reason why it has to be him who lives, it's just that Rolo wants to be a good friend.
  • Innocently Insensitive: The first thing we're told about Rolo is he's not known for his subtlety. This becomes a lot less funny in the route where he and Luka have a fight.
  • Younger Than They Look: Due to the aging chemicals, Rolo ends up looking like an adult despite still being a preteen.

    Beck Moedwil
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/aed715b835629f483201c951e986d63c1.jpg
Beck

A cynical black cat who's new to Beacon Pines. She joins the quest out of boredom, but her street-smarts and persistence quickly endear her to the boys.

  • Becoming the Mask: In one branch, she meets Luka because she needs someone to pose as her friend and he's the first kid she sees. Her parents invite him to dinner, by the end of which they've become friends for real.
  • Brooklyn Rage: She's originally from a big city, and is not intimidated in the least by bullies, and her narration scoffs that they're all the same no matter where they come from.
  • Guile Hero: She's quick-witted, being able to bluff Hiram Tolliver that she's in on Gran's plan to get him to spill details and tampering the perfected aging potion before handing it back to Solomon, resulting in the potion doing the opposite of its intended use.
  • Happily Adopted: Neither of her moms share her species (Nelly is a gerbil and Ilona is a ferret), indicating that neither of them is her biological mother. While the trio have some regular family drama, it's never suggested that Beck being adopted is any point of contention.
  • Nonconformist Dyed Hair: If a tuft of her hair is exposed to the aging chemicals, she ends up dying it bright blue. Justified since otherwise she'd have to explain why it suddenly turned prematurely grey. She insists she likes the look regardless.

Notable Children

    Iggy

A cruel jerboa who often bullies the other kids.

  • The Bully: He doesn't get along with Luka, taunting him over his Orphan's Ordeal.
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: In a conversation with Luka after escaping the Clipboards, he implicitly admits that part of the reason he bullies Luka and Rolo is because he envies the friendship they have.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He’s a bully, sure, but he acts far kinder after Luka helps him escape the Clipboards and even believes Luka should fight against bullies, including himself. He and Tish seem to end up becoming closer to Luka and Rolo in the epilogue following Luka asking him for help during the heist to where the treehouse needs to be expanded to accommodate them.
  • In the Hood: After Luka pushes him in a fight and he falls into a puddle of chemicals, he's hunted down by The Clipboards and tries to avoid attracting attention by wearing Luka's hooded parka that hides his deformities.
  • The Right Hand of Doom: Exposure to toxic waste rapidly ages his right arm and the right side of his face, causing them to grow larger than the rest of his body.

    Tish

A stoic rhinoceros who's Iggy's minion.

  • Energetic and Soft-Spoken Duo: The soft-spoken to Iggy's energetic, as she encourages Iggy to do most of the talking.
  • Number Two: Her most notable trait is how she acts as one to Iggy.
  • The Quiet One: About the only thing she ever says is "Yup". Even when being tickled, her laughter goes "Hahayup". The only time she says anything more is when Luka promises to invite her and Iggy to the treehouse in return for helping out with the heist, where she makes a fully-fledged brief monologue about how she wished for when this day would come.

    Dawn
A young bat who aspired to be a famous reporter, who spends her days asleep at her newsstand, and her nights searching for a scoop that could be her big break.
  • Intrepid Reporter: This young lady will hunt after the truth without fail. This pursuit of the truth eventually rewards her with an internship to a prominent newspaper when she reports on the events of the game.
  • The Night Owl: Justified, as being a bat, she’s most active at night and sleeping during the day.

    Natt
A reclusive and oddly calm mouse lad who prefers the peace and quiet of Beacon Pines' older, abandoned areas.
  • Ambiguous Situation: His presence or history is never fully explained. In the branch where he appears, he seems to act as some form of mystical spirit-guide related somehow to The Source, and he's rather knowledgeable about what's really going on in Beacon Pines, but it's never made clear where he got all his knowledge.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: One of the only characters who never appears or gets referenced in the game's true ending epilogue, perhaps because he's only present on a separate branch of the story.

    Kado
A penguin volunteer at the local library who loves random facts and recommending books.

Luka, Rolo, and Beck's Families

    Gran Juniper Hartford

An elderly doe who's Luka's grandmother.

  • Cool Old Lady: She moved in as soon as Luka's mother disappeared to take care of him.
  • Pretending to Be One's Own Relative: Luka's actual grandmother died eight years ago in another town, and Gran Juniper is actually his missing mother Eleanor trying to stay hidden after being dosed with the aging chemicals.
  • Tampering with Food and Drink: Her jam reserved for Mr. Nuncreed is drugged to put the eater to sleep, so he'll be out of the way as she tries to destroy the Source.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: While she was intending to destroy the Source, she was unaware that doing so would cause everything around the original Beacon Pines, including the replica town, to be frozen over. She ultimately ends up causing some of the bad endings.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: She's out to destroy the Source, oblivious to the fact that her way of doing so will freeze the entirety of Beacon Pines over.

    Eleanor Vanhorn
Luka's mother, who went missing some time ago, leaving Luka to be raised by his grandmother
  • Missing Mom: Unlike Luka's father, who is dead and buried, Luka has no clue what happened to his mom but believes she is still alive. And she is alive, while hiding her true identity to avoid being apprehended by Perennial Harvest after a break in went wrong.

    Walt Vanhorn
Luka's deceased father, whose Luka has fond memories of.
  • Posthumous Character: Luka visits his grave at the start of the story, and he only makes appearances in flashbacks.
  • Tampering with Food and Drink: He's the one responsible for "poisoning" Sharper Valentine into his current condition, hoping to stop his scheme.

    Roxy Cotter

Rolo's older sister, a burly no-nonsense farmgirl.

  • Big Sister Instinct: While usually frustrated with Rolo, she'd also do anything to protect him. It's implied she willingly joins their plan to break into Perennial Harvest after learning what the company did to him.
  • Fiery Redhead: Has red hair and is known for her temper.

    Nelly Moedwill

A gerbil and one of Beck's moms. A brilliant chemist, and the reason the family moved to Beacon Pines, to work at Perennial Harvest, but she sometimes loses sight of the big picture.

  • Masculine–Feminine Gay Couple: Downplayed, but Nelly is the more feminine of the two, being a chemist with a bookish and soft-natured character design in contrast to the more down-to-earth Ilona.
  • Unwitting Pawn: She's being used to perfect the formula needed for Sharper Valentinue to be fully restored to his adult self.

    Ilona Moedwill

An albino ferret and of Beck's moms. She works as a gardener, currently employed by Heiress Valentine. Though she's stern with her daughter, she'll do anything to protect her family.

  • Masculine–Feminine Gay Couple: Downplayed, but Ilona is stated to have come from a rural farming community like Beacon Pines, implied to have been a farmer once, and works hands-on as a gardener, making her come off as a little more masculine than her wife, book-smart chemist Nelly.

The Tollivers

    Hiram Tolliver

Fitz's father, who runs a grocery stand and has a habit of getting involved in matters too big for him to deal with by himself.

  • Acting Unnatural: When receiving a delivery of Gran's jam from Luka, he does a horrible job of acting natural, especially when compared to Mrs. Fratelli doing the same.
The Narrator: Mr. Tolliver leaned back, speaking loud enough for anyone to hear.
Mr. Tolliver: AH YES! THE JAM! Thank you so much for delivering this JAM to me! I shall put it on my store shelves post haste!
  • Bound and Gagged: Ends up tied to a chair by Luka and friends when he accidentally walks in on them exploring Juniper's basement, intending to meet her in person.
  • Nervous Wreck: Overall stressed and bumbling, getting easily startled when Luka interrupts his apple-polishing and otherwise has a difficult time keeping his composure. Gets better in the ending when he no longer has to keep the plan to destroy the Source secret.

    Fitz Tolliver

An elegant squirrel who's Roxy's best friend and Hiram's daughter, though often annoyed by the latter's antics.

The Valentines

    Heiress Valentine

The daughter of Sharper Valentine, who will go to any length to preserve her family legacy.

  • My Beloved Smother: Solomon, her ward, is uncomfortable with how overbearing she can be due to considering him an extension of the family legacy. Some which may be because he's actually her father.
  • Small-Town Tyrant: She tries to be this, but her family's loss of status after the Foul Harvest and her father's death makes her attempts lack any real weight.

    Augustus "Gus" Valentine

The current mayor of Beacon Pines, and son of its founder Sharper. If not for upholding the family legacy, Gus would have preferred a more "grounded" lifestyle.

  • Like Father, Unlike Son: By accounts of Sharper in life, he was someone domineering and wanted to have his way with things. Gus in contrast is only the mayor because of obligation and admits he would prefer a more "grounded" lifestyle if he had a choice.
  • Reluctant Ruler: He did not want to be the town's mayor, but felt obligated due to his family legacy, which shows throughout the story. He's far happier once he steps down.

    Solomon Valentine
Heiress' ward, and the successor to the family fortune, who dislikes how overbearing his caretaker is.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: While he doesn't seem like a bad kid overall, turns out he's secretly none other than the vile Sharper Valentine aged into a child.
  • Pretending to Be One's Own Relative: He does not merely resemble Sharper Valentine; they're the same person, after Sharper was exposed to chemicals, de-aged, and was presumed dead.
  • Replacement Goldfish: For Heiress, who considers Solomon to be the future inheritor of her father's will rather than his own person. Intentionally so, as he's actually Sharper himself.

    Sharper Valentine
The founder of Beacon Pines.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: He desired to use the chemicals previously used for the fertilizer to provide himself a practical fountain of youth. Due to the work of Beck, he ends up getting this...by turning into a baby with no memory of his past life.
  • Posthumous Character: Heiress and Gus were left without their father after a warehouse accident. Except not really, as he's actually alive and well as Solomon, simply having been aged down into a child.

Perennial Harvest

    William Kerr
The CEO of Perennial Harvest, a company that's relocated to Beacon Pines.

  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Downplayed hard, as he is extremely smug much of the time, but despite (trying) to act like a kindly, concerned executive, he is actually a vile and self-important sleaze helping Sharper Valentine to take over the town.
  • Heinous Hyena: He's a hyena who happens to be one of the main antagonists of the story.
  • Meaningful Name: Considering what he's really like, it's no wonder his name could be said as "Bill Kerr" (bilker). Even just the name "Kerr" sounds like "cur". His real name, Patrick C. Montesquieu (Pat C., "patsy") is just as fitting. Both meanings are explicitly punned by Rolo during the reveal.
  • Smug Smiler: His default expression is a smug, toothy smile that never quite reaches his Icy Blue Eyes.
  • Smug Snake: Everywhere he goes he oozes with smug, patronizing confidence. Which makes the story paths that lead to his downfall all the more satisfying.
  • Villainous Breakdown: When he's precariously dangling from falling into the Source, his dialogue portraits get tears in their eyes and he's desperate to convince Luka to save them both while Iggy tries to convince him to do the opposite.

    The Clipboards
The numerous, identical, clipboard-wielding employees of Perennial Harvest.

  • Inexplicably Identical Individuals: There are a whole bunch of them, all looking completely identical to each other, and all only referred to by their collective moniker.note
  • Punch-Clock Villain: While they are gathering information on the town for Sharper Valentine to blackmail people with through their interviews, they are also perfectly happy doing more helpful work like setting up for the festival and even working for Slow and Dirty Harvest after Sharper's machinations are brought down.
  • Red Herring: Early in the game they can easily be suspected to be part of some kind of cloning program, but no, it turns out they're all just like that and Perennial's scientific exploits are completely unrelated.
  • Wolf in Sheep's Clothing: While they seem like perfectly harmless, if annoying interviewers, they are actually gathering information on their fears so Sharper Valentine can control the town.

Notable Adults

    Joseph Nuncreed

A rude dog who runs the local drugstore.

  • Abhorrent Admirer: He pressures Gran Juniper to accept his unwanted affection. That he keeps talking about it in front of her twelve year old grandson doesn't help.
  • The Atoner: Despite being Easily Forgiven in the Playable Epilogue, he replies to Luka's offer to visit Walt's grave by saying he isn't ready to face him yet, and will visit when he feels like he's earned the right to do so.
  • Easily Forgiven: In the Playable Epilogue, he's genuinely surprised when Luka asks if he'd like to visit Walt's grave with him despite what Joseph had done.
  • We Used to Be Friends: He was friends with Luka's father Walt before he died, until Sharper Valentine offered them both a job. Walt turned him down, Joseph didn't.

    Mrs. Fratelli

The sassy manager of a diner, who treats Luka well because she was best friends with his mother before her disappearance.

    Geoff Anderjoop
An oddball that often rummages through trash for treasure, and is easily befriended by giving him a snack.

Other Characters

    Mr. Sinclair
A curmudgeonly pig that's often napping and would prefer to be left alone.

    Ms. Hatch

An imaginative crocodile who spends her days reading by the town fountain.

  • Plot Parallel: The excerpts from the book she's reading line up scarily well with the story's current state. It's lampshaded in the Playable Epilogue when she finally finishes her book and asks Luka what she's missed, and Luka replies that she's "about just caught up".

    Mr. Wilder

The Editor-in-Chief of the town newspaper.

  • Cigar Chomper: Has one in his mouth whenever he's out on the street by his business.
  • Repetitive Name: The town newspaper is called the "Beacon Beacon".

    Mrs. Nelson

A maternal rabbit.

    Bert
An energetic kid always seen with a lollipop in hand.

    Piper
A cheerful girl that never goes anywhere without her bookbag.

    Ylsun
A dapper little dog that's friends with Solomon, and willing to help him cause a little mischief.

    Joey
A young dog that dreams of being a scientist, who studies bugs even though he's a little afraid of them.

    Jase
A shy but friendly arctic wolf kid that usually hangs out at the library reading "Hank Atomic" comic books.
Saying Too Much: Repeatedly has to be reminded by Luka not to spoil the issue of Hank Atomic he's reading.

    Jetson
A young dog that enjoys fishing, believing it's more about the experience than actually catching anything.

    Lumi
A sassy cat employee of the Early Bean Cafe, who looks tough but has a soft side.

    Zariel
Lumi's lion coworker at the Early Bean Cafe, who enjoys helping people out. She also loves mermaid-themed accessories.

    Griffin
The soft-spoken ice cream man, who enjoys looking cute. A green lizard of indeterminate species, resembling a dragon.
Saying Too Much: When approached after Rolo sends Luka on a riddle scavenger hunt, he accidentally asks if Luka is done at the library yet, answering the first riddle and also showing that he's involved in the hunt.

     The Narrator
The writer who desperatly wants a happy ending.
The Storyteller: The one who quite litterally tells the story.
