"Wisdom and Strength"
—House Mooton words

House Mooton of Maidenpool is a noble house from the riverlands. Their seat of Maidenpool is one of the main ports and trade centers of the Bay of Crabs. According to legend, this was the location where Florian the Fool saw Jonquil for the first time while she was bathing with her sisters.

Their blazon is a red salmon on white, over a white field with a golden tressure.

Tropes related to House Mooton:

  • Defeat Means Friendship: An unnamed Lord Mooton was burned during the first real battle of the Conquest. His brother Jon Mooton quickly surrendered and became a vassal of the Dragonlords.
  • Impoverished Patrician: They lost much of their power after Robert's Rebellion as they chose to remain loyal to the Iron Throne over their liege lord Hoster Tully.
  • No Name Given: The Lord Mooton that slew Rupert Falwell during the Battle of the Great Fork.
  • Theme Naming: Their names usually begin with 'J', 'M' and 'W'; Jon, Jirelle, Jonah, Jeyne, Walys, William, Manfryd, Myles.
  • Undying Loyalty: They were amongst the first to surrender to House Targaryen during the Conquest, and their loyalty has shined through during the last 300 years.
  • Would Hit a Girl: After a group of Septas tried to assassinate the pregnant Queen Alysanne Targaryen during her visit to Maidenpool, the Lord Mooton at the time hanged the ones who'd planned and carried out the plot; he was willing to have the rest of the chapterhouse executed even though they were innocent, had Alysanne not intervened.

    Lord William Mooton

Lord William Mooton

The Lord of Maidenpool. Father of, at least, two sons and one daughter.

  • Characterization Marches On: In the second book, he and a son personally try to hunt down Nymeria after she supposedly stole a baby; this is in complete contrast to his later characterization as a Dirty Coward. That been said, Mooton and his sons barely survive their attempted attack on Nymeria.
  • Dirty Coward: During the War of the Five Kings, he remained behind his walls while sending other men to fight and let Maidenpool be burned while it was sacked thrice by Westermen, Northmen and fugitives from the Brave Companions.
  • Girl in the Tower: After seizing Maidenpool, Randyll Tarly has Lord Mooton locked in a tower cell.
  • Pet the Dog: He tries to defend his smallfolk from Nymeria; it's not much, but given how he's got a reputation for cowardice and that most lords don't care about their serfs at all, it's certainly something.
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: With his brother Myles Mooton, who was a brave knight.

    Eleanor Mooton

Eleanor Mooton

Lord William's eldest daughter.

  • Arranged Marriage: Eleanor Mooton, Lord William's daughter, has been promised to Dickon Tarly.
  • Heir Club for Men: Averted. She's mentioned as Lord William's heir, which implies Lord Mooton's previously mentioned sons have died in the course of the war.

    Ser Myles Mooton

Ser Myles Mooton

Brother of William and a friend of Rhaegar Targaryen. He was known for being extremely bold.

  • Alliterative Name: M's.
  • Duel to the Death: Myles was killed in one of these fighting Robert Baratheon at the Battle of the Bells, one of six notable royalists Robert killed that day.
  • Posthumous Character: Perished more than a decade before the series began, with details of his life being mentioned in conversations regarding Rhaegar and Myles' brother William.
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: With his brother William, who is cowardly.
  • The Squire: Served as Rhaegar's squire and was eventually knighted by him.

  • Know When to Fold Them: Considering his brother had just been burned to death by the Black Dread, it's no surprise he wisely surrendered to the Targaryens

    Lord Jonah Mooton

Lord Jonah Mooton

One of the close friends of Princess Saera Targaryen alongside Alys Turnberry, Perianne Moore, Roy Connington and Braxton Beesbury. When Alys turned out pregnant out of wedlock, Queen Alysanne Targaryen quickly arranged for him to marry Perianne Moore.
  • Alcohol-Induced Idiocy: One night, the city watch of King's Landing found a scene going on in one of the brothels, and Jonah, clearly having had at least one drink, declaring how the whole thing was Princess Saera's idea. The guards think it'd be a very good idea to have him explain that statement to the king and queen. By the time he's been brought up to the castle, Jonah has sobered up real fast, and claims they misheard him.
  • Shotgun Wedding: Forced to marry Perrianne Moore after the scandal of Alys pregnancy was found out.
  • Perfectly Arranged Marriage: While it was forced upon them, his marriage to Perianne was considered a success, and ruled Maidenpool together.

    Lord Manfryd Mooton

Lord Manfryd Mooton

"These are foul times and it is a foul choice this queen has given me. The girl is a guest beneath my roof. If I obey, Maidenpool shall be forever cursed. If I refuse, we shall be attainted and destroyed... Would that I had never read this letter."

Brother of Walys and his successor during the Dance of the Dragons. He later became one of the regents on the Council of Seven who oversaw the early reign of King Aegon III.

  • Alliterative Name: Manfryd Mooton.
  • Benevolent Boss: Rather than let his Maester take the blame for warning Prince Daemon and Nettles about Rhaenyra's order to kill her, he decides to own up to it and save Norren's life by switching sides to the Greens.
  • Everyone Has Standards: He was loyal to Rhaenyra until she told him to break Westeros's Sacred Hospitality rules by killing his guest Nettles, at which point he let Nettles escape and defected to the Greens.
  • I Need a Freaking Drink: Rhaenyra's command shocks the poor lord so badly that he loses all powers of speech. It takes three cups of wine for him to get them back.
  • Mistreatment-Induced Betrayal: He was a loyal supporter of Rhaenyra until she ordered him to violate guest right under the threat of his house being attainted and exterminated, which caused him to switch sides.
  • Take a Third Option: Stuck between the rock and hard place of killing Nettles (thus both pissing off Daemon and violating Guest Right) or letting her go (thus pissing off Rhaenyra, his queen), both options carrying a high probability of getting roasted by a dragon, he and Maester Norren decide to let Norren give Rhaenyra's note to Daemon and claim Manfryd never saw it, which both spared his guest and kept Rhaenyra's attention off him long enough to defect.
  • To Be Lawful or Good: Upon receiving orders from Rhaenyra Targaryen to murder Nettles after all the bastard Dragon Riders came under suspicion, Manfryd had to choose between obeying his queen and violating guest right or letting Nettles escape. He chose to be good and allowed her to escape before defecting.
  • Turn Coat: Switched from supporting the Black to the Greens after allowing Nettles to escape.

  • The Smart Guy: Thinking outside the box? Why, yes... yes he does.
  • Take a Third Option: His solution to the Morton's Fork Rhaenyra placed Manfryd in was warn Daemon and Nettles and then claim he acted alone and Manfryd never got Rhaenyra's orders. Manfryd then took a fourth option by switching sides to Aegon II, so neither of them were punished.
  • Undying Loyalty: He was perfectly willing to take all the blame and face execution for warning Nettles in order to spare his lord, but Manfryd refused to allow harm to come to him and changed sides instead.
  • Wise Beyond Their Years: Norren is all of twenty-two years old when he plays his role in the Dance.
