  • In Ace Attorney, when the trials get high-paced, someone shouts it every couple of seconds.
  • ARMS: Every fighter has a different reaction to seeing Dr. Coyle curb-stomping Max Brass in Grand Prix mode at level 6 or 7. Spring Man's is this trope.
  • BlazBlue: Ragna the Bloodedge drops these a LOT in gag endings, with the English voice-actor's delivery being especially priceless. Case in point:
  • Batman: Arkham Asylum: The Joker delivers one at the end:
Joker: I'm actually going to win! Ready for the next round?
    Batman: Always!
    Joker: WHAAAAT?!
  • Castlevania: Symphony of the Night features Alucard, who does this in gameplay a lot, when he's turned to stone, or untransforms in a tight passageway. For Dracula in the prologue, it's more like "big WHAT IS A MAN?!"
  • In Dawn of War 2: Retribution, it's one of the responses of Noise Marines to you clicking on them. Justified because they likely have trouble hearing you given that the majority of their weaponry is based entirely on the loudest, most discordant sounds that can possibly be produced by 40th millennium technology.
  • At the end of Dead Space 2 Nicole tells Isaac "Thank you Isaac. Now, time to die". He has just enough time to blurt out "WHAT?" before being pulled into a mental boss battle.
  • Almaz from Disgaea 3: Absence of Justice uses it multiple times, the biggest one being in the ending you get if he solos the last boss, where he's forced to become the overlord instead of Mao.
  • In Dragon Age II, it's possible to get one out of Fenris by agreeing to give him back to Danarius.
Hawke (to Danarius): If you want him, he's yours.
    Fenris: What!?
  • Used gratuitously in Dragon Ball Z: Burst Limit, 'WHAT!?' is the response from almost every character in the game, to almost every event that occurs in the game
  • In Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade, Jaffar has one at the end of chapter 25E/27H. It's particularly notable because he's been an Emotionless Boy up until now and the order he's just been given is the last straw for him before a full Heel–Face Turn.
Sonia: Once you've killed the prince, kill Nino too.
    Jaffar: What!?
  • In Hades, if you have Extreme Measures 4 active when you fight Hades, he can summon Cerberus to attack you. When this happens, Zagreus's response is a simple "WHAT?!?"
  • The Reveal right before the Final Boss of I Wanna Be the Guy. It really has to be heard for the full effect:
The Guy: No. Not The Guy!... THE FATHER!
    The Kid: WHAT
  • In Kingdom Hearts II, this is how Sora, Donald, and Goofy react to two major revelations, both one after the other: first when they learn that Ansem, the Big Bad of the first game, was in fact the Heartless of a man posing as an entirely different character named Ansem; and again when they learn that the fake Ansem's Nobody is the current Big Bad.
    • They do it again (this time with backing from Riku, Mickey, and even Yen Sid) in KH3D in response to Lea nonchalantly summoning a Keyblade (and only giving a bemused "Oh" as a response) at the end of the game. Suffice to say, the collective fandom was pretty much doing the same.
    • There also in Kingdom Hearts III. A bit of funny dialogue between Riku and Mickey in the Dark World. Riku is reluctant to leave while Aqua is still trapped somewhere in that world, but Mickey tries to reassure him, only for Riku to get the wrong idea about who Aqua really is.
Mickey: But Aqua... she's like Sora.
      Riku: [completely horrified] Whaaat?!
Mickey: No, no, no... Strong like Sora.
[Riku gives a sigh of relief]
  • The King of Fighters:
    • Nanakase Yashiro's Death Cry Echo is an over-the-top "NANI?!"
    • K' belts out a "Nandato!" as his K.O. cry in The King of Fighters XI.
    • Kensou has one in The King of Fighters 2002: Unlimited Match, screaming out "NANI YA?!"
    • Sylvie Paula Paula's Death Cry Echo on the final round is a Cute, but Cacophonic "NANDESUTO?!" (a more formal variant of "NANDATO?!")
  • LEGO Legends of Chima Online: In the "A World of Adventure Awaits You" trailer, Longtooth shouts "WHAT?" upon being told Prince Laval can't be sent any backup because the last few spare troops just went out to a different part of Chima.
  • In Mario Superstar Baseball, this is Bowser's reaction when Mario enters Bowser's stadium.
Bowser: Hmm... I'm over here and... Mario's team is over there... Huh? I........................ ....................... lost............ ..........my stadium. WAIT JUST A MINUTE! WHAAAAT?! Why?! How?! What's going on?!
  • Memoria Freese: During an outfit story, the 2000-year old High Elf Archer delivers one upon finding out Ryu Lion, another elf, is 21 years old and not around her(Archer's) age.
  • In Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, in the last hour or so of the game, this basically becomes Solidus' catchphrase. Probably the player's as well.
  • Revolver Ocelot utters a hilarious, surprised and hamatic "WHAAAAAAT?!" when Cyborg Ninja cuts off his hand in Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes.
  • In chapter 22 of Onmyōji (2016), Ibaraki-dōji lets out one of these after his friend Shuten-dōji refuses to defeat him.
  • In Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, this is Professor Frankly's catchphrase. Usually given after the events of the last chapter were explained to him so he can act as Mr. Exposition for the next. It's delivered from outside his house in the form of a speech bubble that fills half the screen.
  • Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity uses this trope A LOT!!! Even with the player himself. The player even lets out one after Hydreigon tells the player that Kyurem stands in Hydreigon's way of destroying the Bittercold.
Hydreigon: But there's something standing in my way. The one who stands guard over the Bittercold. Kyurem.
    Player Character: (Wh... WHAAAT?! K-Kyurem?!)
Flashback plays. At the end, it cuts back to the player and Hydreigon.
Player Character: (THAT Kyurem... is protecting the Bittercold?!)
  • "An early preview" of Portal 2 used a placeholder voice actor (one of the programmers) for new sidekick character Wheatley, who added a particularly amusing emphasis on the phrase "You did WHAT?!"
  • Resident Evil (the first game, to be exact, courtesy of Barry Burton):
    WHAT!?! What is this?
  • In Samurai Shodown: Warriors Rage, this is Jin-Emon Hanafusa's standard death cry. However, due to his age, he speaks it in typical "old-man" Japanese.
    "NANJATTOOOOO!?"
  • Sam & Max: Freelance Police: Sam does this in episode 205: "What's New, Beelzebub?" when they discover that Brady Culture likes Hell, but prefaces it with "Forgive me, my mouth is too parched for a Spit Take".
  • In Shadowverse, the standard response on the surprised emote is for the character to proclaim a loud what. Though there are some exceptions, the collaboration leader Saber Alter for instance will just produce a smug "Oh?".
  • The last screen you see in Star Fox 64's ending is the team's bill to General Pepper for their services; do sufficiently well (i.e. score enough kills) and the sight of this prompts General Pepper to say "Wha?" in a tone of utter shock.
  • Courtesy of Lord Wakamoto, M. Bison's Japanese Death Cry Echo in Street Fighter IV is the What to end all Whats.
  • Ann Takamaki unleashes one when it's revealed that the treasure Joker infiltrated The Game Awards 2018 to steal was an invitation to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. This one is an instance of Enforced Method Acting, as it was the exact reaction of Erika Harlacher, Ann's voice actor.
  • In Virtue's Last Reward, Sigma lets out a Flat "What" that escalates into this upon seeing the Old Lady's corpse:
Sigma: ...What. ...What? ...What?! What the hell!
  • In When Tails Gets Bored, this is Sonic's reaction to finding out he must find more Tails clones.
  • In Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage!, during the final boss fight against Ripto, Ripto shouts "What!" every time Spyro collects three orbs.
