Colonel Nelec's heroic sacrifice. The only thing that would have made it perfect was if they had used a Jurassic Park shoutout during the part where Nelec stares down the monster.
Although having Nelec say "Clever girl" would have been pushing it.
Nelec's death is pretty much a shout-out to Muldoon's death in the first Jurassic Park movie. Also, Nelec acts like an evil version of Muldoon.
Where Alice demonstrates some serious emotional acting chops during the rehearsal at the train station. It turns out she's channeling some serious personal issues...

Joe, the formerly Shrinking Violet, completely taking charge as soon as he finds out the monster took Alice. With his friends, he coordinates a way to get back to town and then willingly enters an alien's lair to save her. And then, when it corners him, Cary and Alice, he approaches it and talks to it like he would to a person not to hurt anyone else. Considering he saw it brutally kill Colonel Nelec earlier that night, that took serious guts.
