Alternative Character Interpretation / The Sakabashira Game

Go To

  • Is Ceci playing peacemaker to the group simply a way to blend in with them and ensure the game is running smoothly? Or does she actually want everyone to win and go back home?
    • Also, her going up to a demonized Evan and seemingly getting killed by him. Was it because she was buying time until her final showdown with Alex? Or a genuine attempt at putting a stop to it?
    • Does she also get hit with Laser-Guided Amnesia should a player choose to save someone else? She asks Alex for his name again if you do that, but it could also be part of her cover.
  • Alex choosing to revive someone else instead of saving himself. Selfless, good-natured choice, or a Too Dumb to Live one blatantly ignoring the flaws and crimes of the others?
  • Is the Host really as Affably Evil as they present themselves to be? Most of the game, they're very cordial and helpful to the cast, and seem to treat their underlings well too, but one note near the end vaguely implies they look down on humans and think it's ridiculous that they think they're special to be picked for the Sakabashira Game. Additionally, adding a Human Sacrifice and doing all this for no reason means they're responsible for deaths of innocents, but don't seem too concerned about this.
    • Giving Alex the chance to either save himself or one of the others. A Secret Test of Character, an attempt to give others a new start in life, or a mere fulfilling of their promise?
  • Harold's admission to having blood on his hands from the war. A genuine case of At Least I Admit It because he's truly disgusted with Marjorie killing her family, or a poor attempt at justifying his deeds by comparing it to something less acceptable legally and ethically?
  • Was Evan honest about trying to stay optimistic during his bad childhood and thus he has a Freudian Excuse for how he turned out, or was he being an Unreliable Narrator and has been horrible since before his parents died?
    • Also, his surprising Heel Realization if you spare him. Was it natural or a byproduct of something the game/the host did?
  • Cool outright states that he is not proud of his past as a contract killer, but his feelings about the innocents he killed are a bit more unclear, plus he remains quiet in the face of previous game participants who died. A character with No Sympathy or a Lack of Empathy?
  • Bella generally comes across as a Jerk with a Heart of Gold compared to the others, but is also the only one not to reveal anything about her past aside from her job, so she's either a Bitch in Sheep's Clothing trying to hide her messes, or she really isn't all that bad and the situation is just weighing down on her.
  • It's mentioned that no one in the orphanage believed Alex about Evan killing his sister, despite Alex himself stating that everyone was afraid of him because he was so terrible. A case of extreme apathy towards Alex or they didn't think Evan would go THAT far.
  • Was Marjorie's husband abusive from the start or is he a case of Took a Level in Jerkass? Marjorie's initial happiness while talking about her marriage suggests the latter.
