Part 13: Summer Vacation

August 13

Temperance Rank 4

Eri asks Yuuta where he wants to eat, offering to take him somewhere expensive if he wants (evidently due to having no idea of what he actually likes), but Yuuta says he's not hungry. Eri gets quite frustrated at being treated this way even though she left in the middle of a show, making herself seem as though she Wants a Prize for Basic Decency, although the kid could be nicer to his stepmother. You then ask her whether it's impossible for them to love one another, resulting in Eri making excuses about how her maternal instincts haven't awakened due to her not having any kids, and people are simply pawns of Fate, the latter of which she heard on TV.

Speaking of TV, Eri laments how there's only TV and the Internet out here, but she knows she can't go back due to not having the money. She's stuck in the part of Social Links in which the characters make excuses about why they can't do anything about their problems, but the one positive is that she trusts you to keep her secrets, meaning that if nothing else, you're becoming friends.

Evening

In the evening, Dojima has Adachi over for a celebratory dinner for Mitsuo's arrest and confession, which is shown on the news. Apparently, Mitsuo's testimony had "inconsistencies," but Adachi said that with his prints on Morooka's clothes, the case stuck, and Adachi's glad for it. Dojima tells Adachi to shut up, and you enjoy a lively dinner.

August 14

In the morning, Chie warns you that Yosuke will probably ask you to help out at Junes, and she'll be helping him out of pity. It's fairly short notice that doesn't really give you time to plan, so I spent my Sunday on a Social Link

Death Rank 3

Hisano, after momentarily mistaking you for her husband, gets nostalgic, back for a time when they were both young, and the area was prettier. He was a traveling actor, she was a native of Inaba, and they met once a year- she watched his plays, and they dated behind the stage, until he quit the company, married her and became a field hand despite not being very good. Hisano knows it's a happy time, and unfortunately for her, it's because it's already ended, something for which she blames herself.

Evening

I spent time with Dojima tonight.

Hierophant Rank 9

Dojima surprises you by a celebration in honor of everyone becoming a "real" family. He apologizes for surprising you, but decides it was a way of drawing the line. He recalls how Nanako reminds him of her mother, and while he might be tempted to believe Chisato died because she went to pick Nanako up, he believes Nanako saved him just by being there. He comments on the irony of running away from it all by chasing someone who'd run away himself, and asks why this is- the most honest answer, "Because you're a coward" requires maxed out Courage, but also nets you the most points. Dojima's nice enough of a guy to take it in stride, in large part because he's recognized his mistake and vowed never to let it happen again.

August 15-19

Yosuke calls you, and asks you to work at Junes, something you are unable to refuse. At the very least, you get some money and points with Yosuke and Chie out of it.

August 20

The summer festival is today, and takes up the entire day, not just the evening.

Yosuke notes that he remembers the festival being more crowded (but since he moved to Inaba six months before the start of the game, that would mean that he came in October 2010, long after summer ended), and Kanji says it's a natural consequence of the murders.

Chie, Yukiko, Rise and Nanako show up in yukatas, and you can choose which one to compliment, as well as whether to compliment Nanako for points with her. Dojima comes, and encourages you to enjoy the festival while you can.

Teddie, evidently having something in mind, proposes having the group split up. Unfortunately for you, Yosuke and Kanji, he proceeds to then have all the girls come with him, without giving you a choice in the matter. On my first playthrough, I was quite disappointed to not be able to go with Yukiko, but I felt better when I got to do so the next day.

August 21

Yukiko called me, and offered to go with me to the summer festival (On playthroughs in which I hadn't gotten her as my girlfriend by this point, I got Ai one time and Chie another).

Yukiko apologizes for making you come here today, and for not being able to express her desire that she specifically walk with you.

I was then asked to make a wish. I might have chosen "Good Grades," much to Yukiko's disappointment, since I needed the boost to Knowledge, and had already more or less maxed out my relationship with Yukiko.

Yukiko encounters a man who might know her, as evidenced by his calling her "Yuki-chan," but since she calls him "sir" in return, it's unclear whether it's just to be polite, or to be polite to a stranger. After teasing her about her boyfriend, and offering to sell her an apple, he manages to get you and her to buy one for the two of you. Yukiko realizes he manipulated her, but takes it in stride.

Evidently having gotten over her embarrassment, Yukiko shares some okonomiyaki with you, the first person to share food with her besides inn staff or Chie. Yukiko then shares a story about how she caught a goldfish that grew to be over 20 cm long- she released it into the koi pond, but didn't know what happened to it.

You then draw lottery tickets. You win the second prize- a free night for two at the Amagi Inn's Matsu Room, and a photo of Yukiko taken without permission. Yukiko lets out a Big "WHAT?!" and confiscates the photo, prompting the man to give you her prize- a book called The Divine Way.

Yukiko worries about people at the inn making fun of her (as you can see, being teased about her relationship is her weak spot), but says she had a good time today. She hopes to come again someday, and you agree.

'August 22

I bought Genji Beetles from Tanaka's show in order to be able to fish up the Sea Guardian. This is the only purchase that I consider essential enough to be worth noting here.

Chariot Rank 8

Chie is training, and Takeshi comes up to her to apologize, even if he's unwilling to admit that he ran away. This hits a nerve with Takeshi, who snidely tells Chie that if she's no longer friendly, she won't have any good spots. He then mentions how Yukiko has a funky laugh, and assumes Chie made her that way, since "She was better gloomy". Chie says she'll help Takeshi if he's in trouble, but demands that he not talk about Yukiko, since he knows nothing about her. Takeshi then leaves in a huff.

Chie recalls how she met Yukiko- she found Yukiko holding a dog, and Yukiko said that she'd run away from home since her family wouldn't let her have one (the manga clarifies that it's because they have an inn). Chie recalls how she cheered Yukiko up, and swore to protect her, a noble goal that eventually became corrupted by her jealousy and manifested as a Shadow. As a result, Chie decided to branch out and become more than Yukiko's protector, but she's unsure of where to begin. You can cheer her up by saying that she's just getting started, and Chie agrees, asking if anyone can confidently say what gives them value, before concluding that the answer is that everyone's looking. All in all, it nicely sums up Chie's Character Development.

Evening

I worked at the hospital to develop my relationship with Sayoko and Courage.

August 23

The trip to the beach is today. Most of the team gets on motorcycles to go there, while Teddie and Kanji struggle to make it on roller skates and a bicycle, respectively.

At the beach, Yosuke's most excited about seeing Rise in a swimsuit, although he's superstitious enough to worry that he's using up a lifetime's worth of luck. When Rise arrives in an orange bikini, Yosuke's amazed, and you can respond in agreement. Far from being embarrassed or offended, Rise actually enjoys the idea of you checking her out. Despite having biked all the way there, Kanji arrives, wearing a tight black swimsuit that gives the group an uncomfortably close view of his crotch, completely oblivious to the implications.

The Investigation Team goes swimming for a while. You and Yosuke get out, and he offers to find a vending machine. Meanwhile, Teddie tries to trigger a "wardrobe malfunction" on the girls, and succeeds... on Kanji. Kanji comes out of the water with Teddie in his arms, oblivious to the fact that his swimsuit didn't make out. As the realization hits him, he begins to panic, and so does Teddie, who squirms about in Kani's arms despite being the only thing covering Kanji's genitals. With Teddie gone limp and the girls about to get out, you then hastily consider your options, and come up with the idea of wrapping Kanji in seaweed. As they arrive, he sheepishly goes along with Yosuke's claim that he's re-enacting the birth of Venus. After a moment, the girls run away in disgust- it's not entirely Kanji's fault, but you can hardly blame them.

Kanji gets his swimsuit back, and as he stands with you and Yosuke watching the girls playing on the beach, he says that as embarrassing as it was, he wouldn't have come without you. Yosuke ends up embarrassing himself in a seemingly philosophic observation about how living indoors is simple but simple isn't always good (although one would think that getting outdoors and away from one's computers, T Vs and other gadgets would be a return to simplicity).

As Chie proposes a game with barbecued steak as a prize- a prize Rise knows only Chie would want- Yosuke wonders if the good days will come to an end soon. Kanji's confident that they'll go on, since the case was closed. Yosuke proposes going skiing, and Kani's up for it, as long as the roads are clear. In a surprising display of maturity, he says that there's nothing cool about recklessly endangering oneself. Yosuke agrees, and on a related note, decides to get everyone home before it gets dark, since they're still getting used to using their scooters.

Evening

You have the option to spend time helping Nanako with her homework. Doing so gives you a lot of points with Nanako, as well as the other party members.

August 24

I spent some time with Marie today. Oddly enough, even if you're told that your relationship with Marie "will deepen," there are times when spending time with her doesn't advance the link, and today is one such event.

Evening

Yosuke and Teddie come over to help Nanako with her homework, and Teddie gives the suprisingly profound and apropos "Cogito Ergo Sum" as an example of a proverb.

August 25

Since it was raining, I went to Aiya and had the Beef Bowl.

Evening

Chie and Yukiko come over this time, to help Nanako come up with a topic for an essay, and they choose the summer festival.

August 26

Chie calls to hang out, and I took her up on her offer, since I'd gotten some points from helping Nanako.

Chariot Rank 9

Outside of Aiya, the thugs strike again, and this time, are targeting a young boy. This time, the leader of the punks has a plan, since he ran into Takeshi, and had a "friendly conversation" with him to get information on Chie and Yukiko (which probably means that he threatened Takeshi, but considering that Chie and Takeshi had a falling out, you never know...), and threatens to harm Yukiko if Chie takes action. Chie's infuriated, and after a choice of what to do, offers herself up, causing the punks to back down, and earning the kid's gratitude. Chie wonders if what she did was reckless, but you can reassure her that everything turned out well, and she's glad to hear that.

Chie confesses in the only way she knows how- offering to protect you. Here, the choice of whether to accept or reject is by far the most obvious, and since I was already with Yukiko, I said "I'm counting on you," to remain friends with Chie.

Evening

I helped Nanako with her homework, which was a book about a king in the forest. Nanako asks you a question about whether you feel better if you're alone, and gives points depending on how you respond. Honestly, depending on where you are with Nanako's link, the points may very well be superfluous.

August 27

Since it was raining again, and I needed Knowledge points, I did summer homework again.

Evening

Kanji and Rise come over, and Kanji helps Nanako with her arts projects by creating something with household supplies (which probably counts as doing the work for her), enabling you to get points with all three.

August 28

Today, I had a chance to hang out with Rise after getting points with her, so I took it. As you may have noticed by now, a good rule of thumb with Investigation Team Social Links is that if you've recently gained enough points to go up a rank, you should do so relatively soon, so that any points you gain since then go toward the next rank.

Lovers 4

While shopping with Rise, you see someone suspicious. The most prudent response, as well as the one that gets the most approval from Rise, is to prepare to run away. However, it turns out that the man isn't that bad, even if he's someone Rise doesn't want to see. His name is Minoru Inoue, and he's Rise's ex-manager. Even as he says that her fans are eager to see her, she remains adamant that she doesn't want to go back, and even lies that she's marrying you (briefly referring to you by your first name without honorifics to drive that point home). It seems that Inoue doesn't believe her, but leaves out of respect for her wishes.

Rise apologizes for lying, and like with other social links, you can call her out on it, say that it's fine, or even suggest that you'd prefer that it wasn't a lie. In any case, Rise feels she can depend on you.

Evening

Nanako asks you another quiz question, similar to the ones you answer for Yosuke, Chie or Yukiko in class, but no Expression points are on the line. She wants you to answer whether male or female platypuses have poisonous claws, and the answer is male.

August 29

You have to do your summer homework today, regardless of how many times you've done it over the past few days.

Evening

The last night of helping Nanako with her homework. She's doing a picture diary, and as a test of your memory, asks whether it was raining all day the night she did her art homework. The answer is "It had stopped raining by then."

August 30

The fireworks festival is tonight. Like with the summer festival, it takes up your entire day even though it's strictly an evening activity.

Rise invites you to the fireworks festival, clearly wanting to go with you, but knowing that the others will show up anyway. Nanako also expresses a desire to go, although she'll need her father to chaperone her.

The group heads to the hill overlooking town, and note that Nanako should be on her way. Rise wonders where Teddie is, and Yosuke says that he got dragged off by Hanako while hitting on girls. Yosuke seems to think he deserved it, since he dug up Yosuke's magazine collection and showed them to his family this morning. This doesn't inspire too much sympathy for Yosuke from the girls, but Yukiko thought they were talking about his secret savings (which makes sense, since Yukiko's the most chaste and innocent]]). Teddie returns, flattened as he was after the fight with Shadow Rise.

Nanako arrives with Dojima and is happy to hear eithr response. Teddie puts the moves on Nanako, only to be shot down by Chie. A cinematic follows and shows fireworks being launched. The announcer announces the end of the festival. By this point, Nanako's tired, so Dojima brings her back while suggesting that you go home fairly soon.

Rise mentions how happy she is to wear summer clothes(since when she's working, she has to wear fall clothes during the summer) and go to festivals. Yosuke complains that he didn't have any good memories of this one, and you have the opportunity to reference going to the festival with someone else. If you do that, and went with someone from the Investigation Team, the girl in question will get embarrassed and fidgety. Teddie comments how Yosuke's fixated on girls, even though he's the last one to talk, as Yosuke points out.

Kanji wonders if they should have asked Naoto to come with them, and Yosuke and Rise agree, since Naoto was on the same case, and they might never see him again. Rise in particular, regrets being so harsh with him and doesn't want to leave it at that, while Chie recalls him talking about only being kept around as long as he's needed. Yosuke says Naoto probably wouldn't have accepted, and Yukiko suggests that Naoto's working on another case already, causing Kanji to be disappointed, but Rise decides to change the subject, not wanting to worry about what might have been. Yosuke says that Naoto's good looks might have been a "roadblock" to him, causing Teddie to remark about how he only thinks about girls.

August 31

You bring the gang over to split a watermelon- figuratively, not literally, much to everyone's disappointment when Dojima comes with one that's already been cut. Dojima, not having expected everyone to want to split it, or so many guests, apologizes, forcing you to give Nanako a rain check for next year.

After everyone leaves and Nanako goes to bed, Dojima thanks you for making Nanako happy and is about to say something else about the case, but changes the subject and says that you've made some great friends. It's a touching, yet true observation, and the summer vacation really drives home that the Investigation Team are still friends, even though the case is over... or so you think.
