Episode 1: The Beginning of the Beginning

Oh baby. I should probably do updates before we are three sessions in...

But here we are. First session. Let's do this.

Our game starts off with our brave heroes waking up on a perfectly normal morning. Yup. Nothing weird or interesting will happen today. No siree.

That is, until they open up the mailbox outside their respective houses (except Dan; he lives in a restaurant). Inside are sealed envelopes straight from the Elite Four! The letter says something about an oracle and being the chosen ones, but I'm sure you already guessed that. They want to meet our boys at the Indigo Plateau to discuss the prophecy in greater detail. It also advised them to meet with Professor Elm before they left.

Leaving their homes, they realise that it is something like 3am. No one knows why they are waking up at this time. So they meet each other in the town square*

and find out, with surprise, that not only did they not know each other, but that they were all chosen ones! What a surprise!

In any case, they head over to Elm's Laboratory and meet up with the Professor. He informs them that he received an e-mail*

from the E4 explaining the boys' quest. In addition, he warns them of the outbreak of wild Pokemon. The Pokemon have become more feral and aggressive, attacking in groups.

Then the boys were on their way. Or at least, they almost were. Leaving the Lab, they noticed a few people up and about. There was a young man standing near the Lab*

, a young boy sitting by the river, and a middle-aged man staring down the western road.

Anza, the team's Mystic, decided to talk with the young boy. The conversation below is paraphrased but is essentially what happened...

  • Anza: Hey there, little boy. Anything interesting going on?
  • Kid: Actually, yeah! Down that river, a whole load of Tentacruel have sprung up! Normally, there's one or two, but I see at least six!
  • Anza: Huh.... (thinking) Say, have you seen any young girls floating down that way?
  • Me: HE'S LIKE 6 YOU SICKO!! (Everyone else was laughing.)
  • Kid: Uh... No, why would there be?
  • Anza: Nevermind that. Anything else?
  • Kid: Uhm... Nope.*
  • Anza: Are you sure? What if I did a magic trick? Would you tell me something then?
  • Kid: Oh yeah! Do a magic trick, mister!
  • Anza: Alright, here goes...
  • Hashil* : I send out Nyeri* and channel him.
  • Me: Roll for it.
  • Hashil: *rolls a 97*
  • Me: You stare menacingly at Nyeri for a second then you burst a blood vessel in your eye. The kid runs away screaming. (Everyone laughs, except Hashil.)

While Anza was scar(r)ing little kids with bleeding eyes and tales of hentai, Dan and Seth were actually trying to be helpful and stuff. Well, Dan was anyways. They ventured over to the man looking down the road. Seth "accidentally" tried to scan the man's thoughts, which were filled with fear and paranoia. Interested, he starts up a conversation with the man. He wasn't very nice. However, he revealed that he wanted to go visit his son(s) in Cherrygrove, but couldn't go due to the violent wilds. Dan, being the cavalier nice guy that he is, offered the group's assistance. The man scoffed. Seth sent out Faraday the Mareep while Dan sent out Boolie the Spheal (Artwork courtesy of Talden). Seeing that these youngsters had Pokemon to protect him so that he could actually get to Cherrygrove, he happily took them up on their offer.

So after grabbing the still-bleeding Anza, they embark on their TOTALLY EPIC JOURNEY to Cherrygrove. Since the routes are longer (about a day's walk), they decide to take a break about half-way through. Somehow they haven't wandered into any wilds, but none of them worry about it too much. Through my incredibly awesome and subtle GM skills, I managed to coax*

them to explain their backstories and such to each other, since they hadn't really been properly introduced.

After that horrid and... I mean, wonderful and easy-going moment was finished and they had chowed down on some food prepared by Dan and his masterful cooking skitznatzils, they resumed their journey. However, they spotted something in the bushes. Seth, being eager to fill his Pokedex, scanned it with its bright red laser. However, it didn't much care for this and cried out. Soon, the Deerling was surrounded by a miriad of wilds.

WILD POKEMON BATTLE GOOOOOO~!

Now, since this happened a while ago... I can't remember everything that happened. Here are some highlights though...

  • The ringleader of the group was a small yellow rabbit/mouse thing. It was pissed that Seth had scared poor little Deerling so it Thunder Wave'd him.
  • Faraday made a Reflect bunker for everyone to hide behind. That is, everyone who wasn't a wild or named Nyeri the Badass.
  • Anza ninja-scanned a Diglett hiding behind some trees.
  • A watcher of the group (Hey there, Kayeka!) suggested that type advantage would be an INT dependent trait. Dan wanted Boolie to attack Deerling for super-effective damage. He rolled a nat 1. With modifiers it was -1. Asking the man they were accompanying, who has been established as stupid beyond belief, what would be super-effective against Grass, he advised Encore. So Boolie used Encore. On the Tackle-using Deerling.
  • The ringleader, a Minun, was caught by Awe and named Ampere. It would become the Disk One Nuke so far.
  • The Deerling was caught by Dan and named Vivaldeer. This was an act done out of pity, rather than for the sake of adding a powerful teammate.
  • The last remaining wild, an Ekans, was possessed by Anza in a rare moment of competency. It told them that it was unaware as to why it was even there, as it last remembered a feeling of hatred and anger consuming it for now reason. It slithered off.
  • Any time a Pokemon fainted, it burst into a blast of bright light and left no body behind.

After surviving their first encounter, we called it a night and signed off. It didn't hurt that it was 6am for one of our players.

Yeah, this "Encore" story, I'll probably Never Live It Down. Then again, we all have our spectacular failures.

Also, you get used to finish the game round 6:00am. I mean, it only happened three times in a row! Silly me, for living in the future...

Wow... I like it so far (the exchange between the boy and Anza being my favorite moment), though it's reminding me of Poke Wars with all the aggressive Wild Pokemon on the loose.

And let me guess, that boy by the lab is Silver?

Nope. He's someone else.

This is taking place in an alternate 'verse; none of the protagonists from the games (including Red and Green) are in this nor have they been.

Yeah, but I mean as in he's gonna bust in the lab and steal a pokemon, right?

Nothing was stolen from the lab, so no.
