** Notable because it is explicitly stated that these hover-tanks are unable to cross bridges that would not support their weight. Since they are not anti-gravity, but air-cushion, they still exert pressure on the ground.

With a couple of attachments it can transform into a hover-tank mode, especially useful for navigating desert terrain. The rebel Maguanac Fighters also had a hover-based Mobile Suit called the Oliphant.

* The "Air Balleles" (probably a corruption of Barrel, from the AlternateHistory name for tanks used in the works of HarryTurtledove) of TheFiveStarStories. They are actually capable of genuine flight, but prefer to stay close to the ground and generally behave like real tanks to avoid enemy anti-air fire.

* The N64 game Battle Tanx had hover tanks called Hover Tanks, which were basically Abrams with turbines and a flat bottom. Though a bit squirrely to control, they could strafe sideways while firing, float over mines without problems, and pick up an impressive amount of speed for ramming other players.

Please do not pothole work titles — they provide context to those who do not know the work well. Work titles are given in italics. Please follow our Example Indentation. External images on page images tend to be visually intrusive: convert image credit to a comment. Drop the meme from the image caption — the image works without a caption and memes are hard enough to keep under control without them ending up in main text. Rework the main text a bit — we don\'t need to spend so much time on Real Life debunking of the idea — it wouldn\'t work for reals but the focus is the fictional trope. Spelling and link fixes.

Often powered by AppliedPhlebotinum, Hover Tanks are for when you really want a RuleOfCool-driven war machine. They usually hover inexplicably only a few feet off the ground, often bobbing slightly. They would be utterly impractical in reality, as they would need to expend fuel just to stay up (and to counteract recoil every time they fire), and yet wouldn't fly high enough to clear most terrain obstacles. The amount of armor and equipment they could carry would also be severely limited due to weight constraints. Of course, all that doesn't matter in fiction.

In strategy games, they may be portrayed as beingfaster and more maneuverable than their land-bound counterparts, but more fragile. They are usually amphibious as well and can travel over water at full speed.

Note that real-world Hovercraft would not quite count under this trope - while most fictional hover-vehicles use Phlebotinum Drive(usually labeled as "AntiGravity" or "Repulsor"), real-world hovercraft ride on a mundane air cushion and are propelled by oversized garden fans. They barely lift off the ground at all, and have a difficult time operating on non-flat terrain. The closest RealLife equivalent to a hover tank would be the PACVs from the VietnamWar. You'll rarely find this conventional form of hover-propulsion in fiction though.
