begrudgingly makes a bit more sense when paired with decisively

* GoodPowersBadPeople: Despite being Celestial in origin, demons have reluctantly but decisively accepted healing magics as a strategy that can win battles. Also evident in the equipment variations, demons are not above using holy weaponry to get an edge against enemy demons.

Moving to YMMV page.

* DifficultySpike:
** The first game has this at chapter 12, when you start fighting EDF soldiers with way higher HP that what you have at the same level and brutal skills. ''Disgaea 2'' has it at Chapter 11, a puzzle-themed chapter which is hard to navigate, sports strong enemies and mad geo puzzles. ''Disgaea 3'' stops being nice midway through chapter 5 when you start facing advanced enemy classes in high numbers and get introduced to [[ThatOneBoss Salvatore]]. ''Disgaea 4'' has it at Chapter 7 with powerful mages pelting you from everywhere.
** The story stages of every game are largely possible to beat without having to do extensive grinding. Then comes the PostEndGameContent, where enemies regularly have levels in the ''hundreds'' and only get harder with each new post-game chapter you unlock.

* ArtifactName: In ''Disgaea 1'', Skulls were so-named for the full-head hoods they wore, and Cyclopes, the first tier of Galactic Demons, actually had a single eye each comprising their faces. Come the ''Complete'' remake, their sprites have since been swapped with those from later games, with the latter becoming a completely different monster altogether, first tier known in other games as Baciel, while also retaining their original stats and abilities.

Up To Eleven is a defunct trope

* AbsurdlyHighLevelCap: Max level is 9999, although only a fraction of this is needed to get through the stories of the games. And in later games, even ''this'' is just the tip of the iceberg, as you can reincarnate characters for stat bonuses and get them back up to 9999, again and again. The sixth game raised it to [[UpToEleven 99999999]].

All the games are highly regarded by TacticalRPG enthusiasts for their twisted humor and myriad ways to [[EliteTweak customize and level up characters and equipment]]. The series practically revels in excessively tweaking your character to make them into as gamebreakingly strong as possible. Facilitating this is a notably open-ended and lengthy postgame, often where the majority of the grinding takes place. Oh, and the Prinnies are so cute too, dood!

%%* * AerithAndBob: In a series with a large cast, this couldn't be avoided.avoided. Some names are perfectly mundane (''e.g.'' Gordon, Jennifer, Kurtis, Taro, Hanako...). Others are less common, but thoroughly believable (Adell, Rozalin, Sapphire, Zed). And then there's head-on descent into the fantastic (Laharl, Vulcanus, Valvatorez, Killia). The randomly generated names likewise run a wide course.

to:

%%* AerithAndBob: In a series with LoadsAnd LoadsOfCharacters, a large cast, this couldn't be avoided.

* LoadsAndLoadsOfCharacters:
** The three [=PS3=] games have just enough special characters that join so that you don't really have room to use generic characters. Most of these special characters join at a low enough level that it's pointless to use them, however. The third game has an alternative -- Loads And Loads Of '''Generic''' Characters -- it contains male and female versions of every generic NPC that was in ''Disgaea 1'' and ''2'', ''as well'' as generic characters from some other NIS games. Later games have special characters not count against the recruitment limit, meaning that you can easily have an army of over ''150'' units.
** The downloadable content goes even farther, offering nearly ''every playable Disgaea character ever'' (and some that weren't), as well as a crapload of other Nippon Ichi characters, from ''VideoGame/PhantomBrave'', ''VideoGame/MakaiKingdom'', and ''VideoGame/SoulNomadAndTheWorldEaters''.

* VideoGameStealing: You can steal items from just about any monster, and taking these items away actually has a discernible effect on their performance -- for example, steal an archer's bow, and they're a sitting duck. ''Disgaea'' Thieves can even steal stats! It's pretty much the only way to level them up in the first game, since their growth and aptitude rates are far inferior to other created characters. Thieves in ''Disgaea 2'' onward are more balanced and in some games can also use their thievery skills to inflict StandardStatusEffects.
