* OffModel: Due to this being a LongRunner, it's bound to happen often.
** In particular, sub-contractors Last House and Creator/StudioLive have earned their (rather negative) reputation [[http://www.kanzenshuu.com/animation-styles/from traits like pointed chins]]. On top of that, they handled no less than half of the entire franchise '''''combined'''''.

It took Goku, who was prophesied to get it, amazing emotional and physical stress to achieve it. Ditto for Future Trunks, Vegeta, and Gohan. Then they discovered that there are ''levels'' to the Super Saiyan transformation. Then Kid Trunks and Goten, Vegeta and Goku's ''pre-teen children'', discovered they could transform at will, ''just because''. And '''then''' they discovered that the key to the truly legendary transformation (the one that warranted the genocide in the first place) were the Saiyan tails that Goku and Vegeta had long since gotten removed as liabilities.

** The only characters who don't die in the entire series are Mr. Satan, Fat/Good Buu, Lord Enma, Fortune Teller Baba and the minor characters born post-Buu arc do not die either.

* OutlivingOnesOffspring: Subverted twice.
** When Gohan is four years old, he's abducted by his genocidal uncle Raditz. Raditz is killed, resulting in Gohan being instead kidnapped by his father's mortal enemy, Piccolo, and forced to fight Nappa and Vegeta who are coming to wipe out the planet. After they're dealt with, Gohan leaves the planet for Namek. All of this happens while his parents are helpless to do anything for their very young son, continuously thrust into life-threatening situations when he should be in kindergarten.
** During The Cell Games, Goku forfeits his match against Cell knowing he (Goku) couldn't beat him (Cell). While it's thought to be the end, Goku instead has Gohan, still a (admittedly strong) child, fight Cell, a monster even Goku says he couldn't beat. While Gohan was able to defeat Cell in the end with the power of Super Saiyan 2, the fight before said transformation was extremely brutal to Gohan as [[WouldHurtAChild Cell didn't hold back any punches, even though he was fighting a child]]. And this fight was being broadcast live, meaning Chi Chi, along with the rest of the world, were watching this monster try to kill her son, [[ForcedToWatch and she couldn't do a thing]]. And even Piccolo gave Goku a WhatTheHellHero speech about it.

* ProperlyParanoid: Gohan may be a Half-Saiyan, but [[EducationMama Chi]]-[[{{Tsundere}} Chi]] was not okay with Gohan leaving to go to Namek for two months. While Chi-Chi may be unreasonable sometimes, she was rightfully paranoid with Gohan going to a potentially dangerous planet and leaving her alone for two months [[AdultFear (she had not seen him for a whole year)]] to revive Piccolo, the same guy who blasted a hole through Goku, her husband, and killed him in the Saiyan arc. She displays this trope throughout the series when Gohan goes up against the Androids and Cell, fearing for Gohan's health and well-being when he's fighting bad guys.

** [[SpacePirate Bojack]], an evil space pirate assumed to be on the same level as Cell was sealed away by the four Kaio centuries ago. Now take into consideration that Goku surpassed each of them in strength before the first saga of DBZ was over.
** After Goku and Vegeta save Gohan, Goten, Piccolo, Trunks, and Fat Buu from Evil Buu's body, he technically should have reverted to his original gray self. Instead, he becomes ''another'' Kid Buu, as the original turned into Fat Buu after absorbing one of the Kais.

to:

** The way Kami explains it, the limits on Shenron's ability to bring a large number of people back to life are that their deaths must have a commonality, and they must have died within the last year. So King Kai words the wish to bring back everyone killed by Frieza and his men. This unfortunately excludes a village of Namekians killed by Vegeta, as by then he was in rebellion against Frieza and no longer one of his men. But a month or two before, he killed Nappa, who stays very dead.

* InnocentPlantChildren: Since the Namekians technically qualify as [[PlantPerson plant people]], Dende from ''Anime/DragonBallZ'' starts out as this trope naturally. However, it is quickly subverted in the sense that his innocence is violated when Frieza launches an attack on his homeworld, with his minions killing his family and everyone else in his village. As a result, he is bitter to certain people, especially Vegeta and those that killed his kind. However, he is still very much a child like Gohan and retains this innocence in a few regards such as how he looks up to Nail and later Piccolo as a sort of big brother. There are also other child Namekians in the series that play this trope more straight.

** [[EvilCounterpart All of the villains from King Piccolo onward]] [[ShadowArchetype share many aspects with Goku]]. King Piccolo and his son Piccolo share similar backstories to Goku. The Saiyans all share Goku's love for fighting, pride in their power, and challenging themselves. Like Frieza, Goku has an enormous amount of raw natural talent, represents the strongest his race have to offer, and becomes just as sadistic as Frieza after turning Super Saiyan. After becoming perfect, Cell gains Goku's laid-back demeanor and gives his opponents sporting chances so he can enjoy the fight longer. Majin Buu shares Goku's love of food, fighting, playfulness, crude manners, and is much smarter than people give him credit for. [[TheDreaded He is also among the most feared beings in the universe]]. The fact that Goku has a conscience and a set of morals are what set him apart from his enemies.

** Despite being born and classified as a lower class Saiyan, Bardock has a power level around 10,000 before he died. For reference, Goku didn't get that high until he trained with King Kai and he was still only around 8 to 9,000 without the Kaioken. That also makes him much stronger than Nappa, an elite solider. In fact, he's about as strong as King Vegeta. Some of this is explained as Bardock regularly coming back from missions half-dead.

** When Son Gohan debuted in Chapter 196 in Weekly Shōnen Jump, he gave his age as '''three''' years old, hence why he holds up three fingers. Gohan is said to be four years old on the title page of the very next chapter, and his dialogue is altered in collected re-releases to change his age to four.
** Similarly, in the original version of Chapter 213, when Krillin meets up with Gohan to fight Nappa and Vegeta, their dialogue implies they are meeting for the first time. By the time the tankōbon came out, Creator/AkiraToriyama apparently remembered that they had met at Kame House a year earlier, and their dialogue was rewritten accordingly.
