Enter Midori Nesavas, a [[WitchSpecies witch]] [[UnSorcerer devoid of any power]], and as a result [[AllOfTheOtherReindeer a target of ridicule and general dislike]]. [[EccentricMentor The teacher]] [[ReasonableAuthorityFigure is nice enough]], and she has [[OnlyFriend one friend]] named [[BlackMagicianGirl Aiden]]. Oh, and her [[AllGirlsWantBadBoys crush]] just happens to be the most feared (and powerful) kid in the school - [[NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast Damian Grimshaw]]. [[BlatantLies Normal enough, right?]].

* FantasticRacism: There are three kinds of people in the world: those with [[WitchSpecies inherent magic]], who are generally more powerful but [[CripplingOverspecialization tend to be limited to a particular power set]]; those with [[CastFromHitPoints potential magic]], often [[WeakButSkilled weaker]] but [[JackOfAllStats more flexible in their choice of powers]]; and [[{{Muggles}} those with no magic at all]]. The WitchSpecies are typically seen treating mages as "lesser" than themselves and don't see them as "true" sorcerers, while some of the mages themselves assume that ''all'' witches are this way as per their own genetic makeup. {{Muggles}} tend to either be disregarded altogether (God forbid should you be a MuggleBornOfMages), plus the antagonists are comprised entirely of these. UnEqualRites also come into play a lot, with many [[PersonalityPowers elemental stereotypes]] getting a stigma in some circles.

* WitchSpecies: Witches and wizards. Traits [[ElementalBaggage inherent magic]], a {{familiar}}, and a specific set of ElementalPowers that may or may not be [[CripplingOverspecialization too specialized]].

** Aiden remarking that Oberna is connected to [[Disney/SnowWhiteAndTheSevenDwarfs Doc, Happy, Sleepy, Sneezy, Bashful, and Dopey]].

* GenreSavvy: Aiden, in some ways; she recognizes that being a BloodKnight {{pyromaniac}} with a HairTriggerTemper [[FatalFlaw is a serious problem for her]], and decided to avoid going to a fire-guild where her more negative behaviors would be encouraged. She instead opted for a "[[{{Foil}} balancing act]]" in her life, and enrolled in Cassiope where those around her would be a better influence. [[TookALevelInKindness It works]].

* ShallowLoveInterest: {{Defied}}; he was originally going to be a LoveInterest to Midori, but I found their relationship to be too contrived and a bit {{cliché}}. They are friendly with each other, but I saw them BetterAsFriends.

She's pretty skilled for a fire mage with a low tolerance level, and certainly ''acts'' [[SmallNameBigEgo like she's all over this trope]], but everyone either [[RedheadsAreUncool hates her]] or [[TheDreaded is afraid of her]] because of the nasty "[[{{Pyromaniac}} likes fire]]" and "[[HairTriggerTemper has anger issues]]" combo. She comes off as a self-important {{Jerkass}}, but when you actually get a peek at her internal monologues, [[HeroicSelfDeprecation she's constantly berating herself for screwing up or is convinced she will do something wrong]]. On top of this, she has a pretty low self-esteem. She pushes people away both because [[KidsAreCruel she doesn't want to be hurt]] and because [[SourOutsideHurtingInside she feels she'll hurt them and doesn't deserve to have friends]]. ''[[JerkassWoobie Yikes]]''.
