When their souls manage to somehow maintain awareness despite the loss of their bodies, It creates entire worlds, specifically designed to break their minds. When THAT fails, it forces their duel spirits to be it's vessel as a form of psychological warfare.

And to add to [[UpToEleven that]], he becomes the first duellist to lose to a cultist and is nearly crippled as a result.

* RunningGag: Jacques' inability to accomplish anything while unconscious. ItMakesSenseInContext.
* [[SheIsNotMyGirlfriend You Are Not My Girlfriend]]: Has repeatedly told this to the [[PaintingTheMedium pink voiced]] Gamma-03. Doesn't seem to take, really.

* PetTheDog: He is much nicer around Regulus after Regulus became the first duellist to beat him during the tournament, and is the first duellist to express concern for him when he is temporarily rendered comatose.
** Despite having a blatant dislike of Marcus, Peter actually seem to offer words of encouragement to the boy when he hears him being tortured by Haine.
* TheRival: To Marcus.

* TheSmartGuy: Shows shades of this. Which is related to...
* ShownTheirWork: Did enough researching into Duel Academies prior to attending that both the large quantity of Duel Spirit-seeing people and an OmnicidalManiac trying to revive himself left him mostly unfazed.
* TagTeam: Part of one in a two-on-one duel with Peter against one of Apophis' cultists.

* BattleInTheCentreOfTheMind: Has one with Freed. However it's inside ''Freed's'' mind rather than his own.

* CryForTheDevil: Expresses genuine sympathy for Skull Knight when he realises the latter was [[TragicVillain possessed and forced to be a monster.]]

* YouShallNotPass: Pulls this on Skull Knight to allow Regulus to get the Exodia card to Sophia. {{Subverted}}, however, in that he manages to survive. He however made it clear that this was what he ''thought'' he was doing.

* FusionDance: Him and Meteor were forced in to doing this during the duel against his parents, proving there conviction but also hoeing to gain the power to win [[spoiler: Marcus being mostly unable to keep a monster on the field for them had not helped matters.]]

* TheWorfEffect: Suffers this at the hands of David.

* CreepyMonotone: Uses this during his BreakingSpeech to Gretel.

* EpicFail: During the battle royale, he screws up his entire strategy twice by misreading his cards.

** His BreakingSpeech to Gretel was ''incredibly'' vicious, but you can't really say she didn't deserve it.
** Then there's his cold blooded [[spoiler: execution of one of the cultists. It was horrible enough to qualify him as the group's TokenEvilTeammate, but considering that the cultist was a nihilistic psycho who had tried to torture and kill Daniel...]]

* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: Briefly has this reaction when he believes that the cultist he {{Mind Rape}}d and killed was a friend of Roxas. [[SubvertedTrope He gets over it in seconds, however, when he finds out that Roxas objected on principle alone]].
* MyGreatestFailure: While he tries to deny it, he clearly feels horrible about the death of Sylvestre.

* NiceJobBreakingItHero: A subtle example during the Tag Duel with Denero. While his strategy is solid, it unfortunately has the unforeseen consequence of being indirectly responsible for Denero merging his mind with the Meteor and becoming more aggressive and unstable as a result.
* NightmareFace: It appears during his BreakingSpeech to Gretel and is based on [[http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/posts.php?discussion=13409218090A18920100&page=47#1156 the photo of his RPer]].
* ObfuscatingStupidity: He used this in the early parts of his duel against Gretel, [[BatmanGambit playing on her arrogance and impatience to lure her into a trap]].

* ShootTheDog: He orders his partner to read the mind of a helpless cultist then kill him. Naturally, [[WhatTheHellHero this horrifies the other members.]]

* HeroicRROD: It appears David's duel with Denero resulted in him being temporarily weakened, as if it took a lot out of him just to do that.

He curbstomped Denero into dust, completely turned his appearance around, and he appears to have a few more internalized...problems...than we thought. He claims to be an "Apophis Guardian", and was the one who told Avrum about the threat posed by Apophis. Even so, there are numerous mysterious facts about his personality, let alone his bizarre habit of sneaking around the Academy.]] Then again, considering that the cast of this show consists of, at last count, a borderline sociopath, an 'Outseer', a 'Dualmind' multiple people with Duel Spirits, a hacker, a thief with a dark past, a boy possesed by an evil sword and another who can somehow fight Shadow duels despite not having a spirit, David is ''still'' probably the closest thing to a normal person at this school.

** This is one of the reason's losing to Haine effects him so badly. For the first time in his life ''[[HeroicBSOD Marcus is too scared to get back up and fight].]''

The son of the wealthy Kyleman family, Marcus is probably the most... "[[CloudCuckooLander unique]]" duellist in the academy.

* CloudCuckooLander: Probably the most absent-minded of the duellists.

* CloudCuckoolander: He has a strange train of thought. He tends to say very odd, random things, and contributes to conversations in odd, inexplicable ways.

* CloudCuckooLander: Occasionally. Though it's lessened since CerebusSyndrome kicked in.

* AmbiguousAllegiance: It is very, very difficult to tell which side he's on, if he has one aside from his own, or what kind of person he really is underneath all of the false fronts, lies, and guileful behavior.

* ShoutOut / {{Expy}}: In general, he seems reminiscent of Shingetsu Rei. He is aloof and mysterious, while pretending to be goofy and unassuming around others, and has shown hints of a darker, more mysterious side of his personality.

* BadassBystander: Not afraid to stand up against a scary Denero for the girl he seems to like, [[spoiler: even less scared to tell him in a frank manner why he sucks, and then curbstomp him into dust.]]
* CloudCuckoolander: He has a strange train of thought.

* CowardlyLion: In large groups, he seems shy and awkward. When he's in less packed spaces, he is far more courageous.

* ObfuscatingStupidity: He seems to be a somewhat dimwitted, cowardly sort when being watched by others, and who can only be courageous when fighting to defend a girl he likes. [[spoiler: This front was momentarily dispelled when he became quite serious at the end of his duel with Denero, dishing out a very brutal Reason You Suck Speech.]]

** Supposedly Jacques is a very good duelist. This gets harder to believe with every loss he receives.

* PetTheDog: He is much nicer around Regulus after [[spoiler: Regulus became the first duellist to beat him during the tournament,]] and is [[spoiler: the first duellist to express concern for him when he is temporarily rendered comatose.]]

* GoodIsNotSoft: Definitely shows signs of this during his duel with the Skull Knight as he uses the Skull Knight's hatred and his own darkness as a weapon.
** Once he finds out what happened to Marcus he encourages Gol'Gar to mind rape and kill Haine.

* TeamDad: What he ''tries'' to act like at times. He's becoming much better at it as the series progresses.
** Really comes to light when he comforts Marcus.

* WhatTheHellHero: Gets this from Jacques after his decision to abandon Marcus. Ironic, since Marcus had ''wanted'' them to leave.

* AloofAlly: Played with, minus the BadAss aspect. While he's happy to help the group and is reasonably polite to them, he doesn't really consider himself to be part of the team, and considers their alliance to be more along the lines of a business deal.
** To the point where he is legitimately shocked to hear Sigmund call him a friend.

* BerserkButton: NEVER bully someone in front of him, and if you do, and you continue to belittle others, then pray to '''GOD''' that you can back it up or Marcus will ''destroy'' you. As Gretel found out the hard way.

** During the duel with Gretel, he used Obfuscating Stupidity both to lure Gretel into a false sense of security, and also to simply [[TheGadfly annoy the crap out of her]]. (She had ''really'' pissed him off with her arrogant attitude before the duel, so he was trying to not just beat, but humiliate her) When Marcus saw the face down cards on Gretel's side of the field, he was almost positive that they were traps. However, he also realized that it was better to spring them ''now'', and lose a weak monster, than to spring them later and lose one of his trump cards. Furthermore, he also had three separate traps of his own that he could use to counter her retaliation. Now, if he were to use the same cold, confident and eloquent attitude he had been using in the previous duels, then it would be obvious to Gretel that he had a plan. And Marcus knew that Gretel was intelligent enough to easily figure it out. (After all, if ''he'' could figure it out, then so could she.) But by acting like a fool, he could make his reckless actions look like the work of an incompetent amateur who didn't know what he was doing. Furthermore, by being as annoyingly retarded as possible, he manipulated Gretel into wanting to end the duel as quickly as possible, which meant she would be quick to play her strongest monsters in order to take him down as quickly as possible, little knowing that he had a surprise waiting for them. His plan worked perfectly. She wasted her backrow and Mystical Space Typhoon on cards that could easily be replaced, and in her impatience to end the sham of a duel and shut up the babbling idiot, she threw one of her beloved XYZ monsters right into the path of a Mirror Force. leaving Alien Hypno free to attack her directly.

* ComplexityAddiction: He has a tendance to use rather elaborate battle strategies.

* {{Determinator}}: Marcus states outright that he can never be defeated, because he will always be back for more.

* NiceJobBreakingItHero: A subtle example during the Tag Duel with Denero. While his strategy is solid, it unfortuneatly has the unforeseen consequence of being indirectly responsible for Denero merging his mind with the Meteor and becoming more aggresivre and unstable as a result.

* ParentalNeglect: While they genuinely love him and were never abusive, Marcus's parents never knew how to "handle" his quirks when he was growing up, and with the demands of their jobs, this lead them to be quite distant, leading Marcus to believe that everyone considers him a burden.

* ShootTheDog: He orders his partner to [[spoiler: read the mind of a helpless cultist then kill him.]] Naturally, [[WhatTheHellHero this horrifies the other members.]]

* TheStoic: He's likely the most calm and levelheaded of the group. [[DissonantSerenity Too a sometimes disturbing degree.]]

* TokenEvilTeammate: After what he did to the [[spoiler:cultist]]...
** The others seem to have dropped this attitude though. The fact that they had to listen to him being tortured likely helped.
