* AwesomenessByAnalysis: Before the genre shift, it was often shown that she had a military strength SherlockScan. For example, the way she found the saboteur of the girl on the track team bordered on CrazyPrepared with steps like simply happening to read ''every'' newspaper every day. The End also works by analysis; it's noted that she can't copy Hinokage's Unknown Hero because of its inherent resistance to observation.

* PowerCopying: The End, her Abnormality, allows her to instantly gain any skill or ability that she comes into contact with and then ''master'' it. Later on, she doesn't even need to see the skill in action as long as she hears how it works. One power she can't copy is Unknown Hero, precisely because its bearer cannot be observed, described or remembered (for very long).

Senior of Class 13 and Medaka's predecessor as the 96th and 97th President of the Hakoniwa Student Council. His Abnormality is called "Unknown Hero," as he literally has the ability to disappear out of sight and out of mind. The gist of how this work is that he's so large and intimidating that [[InvisibleToNormals most people subconsciously forgot he even existed]] or want to overlook him. As the former Student Council President, Hinokage protected the school for 2 whole years from the shadows. However, he was [[OneLastJob coaxed to come out of retirement]] by Medaka when he discovers the threat Class -13 poses to the entire school.

Medaka is literally better than everybody, no matter how accomplished. The student council president, elected with 98% of the vote, Medaka is one of the mysterious ''Abnormals'' -- [[UltimateLifeForm genetically perfect human beings]]. In addition to being vastly better than average, this manifests itself in a special power -- she has the ability to copy other people's special power along with their personality and master them instantly, then use them at will. This ability is known as "The End".

Near the end of the Thirteen Party Arc, it turns out she has an even more terrifying nature hidden beneath that.

In her second election, she gains the vote of the 2 percent that didn't vote for her, though the other 98% didn't give their vote to her because they loved her.

* AdrenalineMakeover: [[spoiler:After losing the election to Zenkichi and deciding to live more freely, she has Zenkichi cut her hair short and starts wearing a sportier outfit.]]
* AesopAmnesia: After Zenkichi [[TalkingTheMonsterToDeath talks her]] out of her [[BrainwashedAndCrazy brainwashing]] during the Flask Plan arc, she revises her life's goal to make others happy so as to include her own happiness. When she [[spoiler:loses the next Student Council President election to Zenkichi, she's left feeling that her life without keeping the position to serve others has lost all purpose, requiring Zenkichi to yet again talk her out of the mindset as viewing herself solely as servile.]]

* AnimalsHateHer: Medaka terrifies all animals because they can sense her immense strength. [[spoiler:Seems to not be the case after the TimeSkip, where she has her office filled with dogs.]]

* AuthorityEqualsAsskicking: Student Council president and, by the end of the first real arc, easily the strongest person in the school.
* AwesomenessByAnalysis: Before the genre shift, it was often shown that she had a military strength SherlockScan. For example, the way she found the saboteur of the racing girl bordered on CrazyPrepared with steps like simply happening to read ''every'' newspaper every day. The End also works by analysis: It's noted that she can't copy Unknown Hero because of this.

* BareYourMidriff: Her outfit [[spoiler:after losing the title of Student Council president to Zenkichi and becoming a regular student.]]

** Kikaijima’s apathy toward animals actually angers her enough that they get into a fight.
* TheBerserker: When she gets too angry, she enters an alternate mode capable of tearing down buildings merely by walking. She ignores all injury, obstacles or morality in this state, though later it's mostly under control. It comes in handy later on to NoSell [[WordsCanBreakMyBones Styles]], as she "doesn't hear words" in this state.
* BerserkerTears: When [[spoiler:Zenkichi briefly dies]] in Chapter 71, she is so distraught that she enters War God mode, and several people have to hold her down out of fear that she'll go on a massacre.

* BigGood: Medaka is always the one leading operations and is the symbol of the main cast.
* BigLittleSister: She's much taller than her older sister Naze Youka.

* BrainwashedAndCrazy: Played with. Oudo tries it, but he just sets her personality back to how it once was.
* CharacterTics: Has a habit of imitating other people's poses. She also has a very distinctive pose involving pointing her fan. The former habit is dropped shortly after the Flask Plan starts, and the latter after [[spoiler:losing her position as Student Council President.]]
* ChildhoodFriendRomance: It's clear from early on that Zenkichi and Medaka like each other, but they don't realize how the other feels. [[spoiler:At the end of the final chapter, both agree to get married after their final duel.]]

** It's rather telling that during one of the earlier arcs(The Flask Plan), she drops a mention to the fact that by the time she was a year old she had already accumulated all the academic knowledge she currently possesses.
* ChronicHeroSyndrome: She has lived by the policy that she was born to help others since she was two years old. It gets deconstructed since this is treated as a flaw. Medaka believes ''everyone'' needs her help and can't see the ones she helps as friends which leads her to think of her enemies as more like friends than her allies.

* ClingyJealousGirl: Subverted. Shiranui implies that Medaka is being jealous of her when she tries to keep her and Zenkichi from working together early on, but in truth she just doesn't like Shiranui. On other occasions, such as with Emukae, she laughs it off.
* CloudCuckooLander: It starts with directly asking a suspected robber about the crime and believing that a dog outfit will let her approach a lost dog without scaring it off. It's around the point when she tests her successors in a PlayboyBunny outfit with an absurdly expensive, absurdly designed video game that they wonder what an ordeal Zenkcihi must have suffered being around her for 13 years.
* ComicallyInvincibleHero: Both very early on in the series before she meets anyone at her level, and later in the series after she's overcome all her rivals. Culminating in [[spoiler:an arc which consists of her beating up ''every single character in the series'' (except Ajimu, who was "[[DeathIsCheap dead]]") off-panel, a few at a time.]]

* CustomUniformOfSexy: She modified her uniform to add a massive CleavageWindow and shorter skirt, which could [[NoDressCode in no way, form or context be considered within school regulations]].
* DefeatMeansFriendship: Deconstructed. Medaka actually ''can't'' befriend people without somehow defeating and "fixing" them first. Zenkichi, the only person who she befriendly normally, eventually comes to the conclusion that [[spoiler:he needs to actively oppose her if he still wants to be of any interest to her.]]
* DesperatelyLookingForAPurposeInLife: When she was a child, she wondered why someone so incredibly skilled and intelligent was born and came to believe her life was meaningless. Zenkichi was the one who gave her a purpose by telling her she must have been born to make people happy. This is played with every which way before being finally deconstructed twice over during the course of the series. Every time, Zenkichi was instrumental in showing Medaka a purpose she would follow.

* DetonationMoon: Did ''something'' to the moon [[spoiler:that caused both she and it to disappear. 11 years later she's working on a plan to restore it.]]

* FlashStep: Medaka has a unique variant- the Kurokami Phantom. First, [[LosingAShoeInTheStruggle she must shed her footwear]]; she needs to go barefoot to make her footsteps perfectly nimble and unfettered. Next, she leaps up and down in a hypnotic series of bounces until the sound of her jumping is out of sync with her visible movements. Then, she sprawls down and blitzes her opponent with a ''devastating'' sonic strike that tears apart everything in the vicinity. Unfortunately, this attack is so brazen, [[HeroicRROD Medaka's body also takes a beating.]]
* ForHappiness: Since Zenkichi told her he believed she was born to make people happy when she was two years old, Medaka has dedicated her life to make everyone happy. Due to her being brainwashed, this was later amended to allow for her own happiness, not just the ones she wanted to help.
* {{Gainaxing}}: There is a lot of this in just the first episode. Granted that it is [[Creator/StudioGainax Gainax]] though.
* GenerationXerox: She has the workaholic tendencies of her mother as well as the expectancy of others to follow her example and her father's extravagant and 'larger-than-life' personality and overflowing love. [[spoiler:This was intentionally set up by Professor Fukurou, who wanted a more sociable version of his older sister.]]
* GenkiGirl: Becomes much more energetic and friendly after [[spoiler:losing her position to Zenkichi and becoming a "normal" student.]]

* HealingFactor: All Abnormals heal quickly and Medaka does so quickly enough to heal broken bones simply by walking around for an hour or so. After seeing Koga's restructured body she begins healing even ''faster.''

** In Chapter 36, after Munakata apparently kills Zenkichi by turning him into a HumanPincushion, she can do little else than drop to her knees in disbelief before bawling her eyes out.
** She loses it in Chapter 71 when [[spoiler:Zenkichi does a HeroicSacrifice to take down Kumagawa]].
** She also completely breaks down in Chapter 139, when [[spoiler:Zenkichi not only defeats her in the presidential election, he ''crushes'' her. She had devoted herself to helping others and lacks the social awareness to see that people wanted her to be happy herself for a change.]]

* HonorBeforeReason: As an AllLovingHero, she often resolves to reform people at all costs.
** In the Flask Plan Arc, she continues to trust her older sister Kujira despite the latter having no memory (and consequently, no attachment) of her, and having already proving herself untrustworthy.
** In the Kumagawa Incident Arc, the Student Council [[spoiler: actually wins by the second match]], but Medaka doesn't feel right letting Kumagawa leave without helping him. She also lets him [[spoiler:hit her with Book Maker, bringing her down to his level]] just because he requested it.
** In the Jet Black Bride Arc, she insists on playing by Momo Momozono's terms to [[spoiler:save Zenkichi, who she just agreed to marry]] despite [[PhysicalGod Ajimu]] offering to easily solve the situation, and the risk of having to ''gouge out her own eyes'' if she loses.
* HyperspaceArsenal: Learned after the fight against Munakata, even when she didn't face him.
* {{Hypocrite}}: In the fight against Kumugawa, Medaka asks him what the problem is with not wanting to lose. In chapter 115, she chews Zenkichi out for not wanting to lose.

* IdiotHair: She has one despite being extremely intelligent, but usually she does behave like an idiot.
* IdiotHero: Medaka is not exactly stupid, but her behavior frequently is.

** For an example, early in the series when Medaka first starts fighting dangerous foes, she lets them get free shots on her. Her idealism leads her to believe that since her foes have no reason to attack her, she has no reason to dodge. She lets her unwillingness to fight result in injury from people actively trying to kill her, because she is unwilling to believe that her enemies have a reason to fight her, and therefore ignores the fact that they are actively doing it. She was also so overly trusting that she couldn't see through obvious deception, which gets her captured and brainwashed during the Flask Plan arc.
* IJustWantToHaveFriends: She needs people in order to be somebody. Anybody. Without people she is only stats and abilities, very similar to her step-brother Tsurubami, a thing of enormous power, but without purpose, happiness, or orientation. "Live for People's Happiness" is her GoalInLife after all. Her CharacterDevelopment after the Kurokami Medaka’s Successor Arc is largely about getting rid of this part of her, thankfully (the emotional dependency, that is, not dropping all her friends).
* ImportantHaircut: After the Kurokami Medaka’s Successor Arc she has Zenkichi cut her hair short, the style she had when the two first met [[spoiler:so she can find a new purpose for herself.]]
* ImprobableAimingSkills: After picking up Unzen's Abnormal ability to calculate trajectories she can launch hundreds of superballs at her opponent. We don't see her master it to the same level Unzen did, however, though she probably did eventually.
* InvincibleHero: She's essentially unbeatable in a fight and never fails at anything important. When the metafiction comes into play, this starts getting played with a lot.
* TheJuggernaut: She moved an entire building in her fight against Unzen, stating that as Student Council President it was [[InsaneTrollLogic within her rights to move buildings if she deemed it necessary]].
* JustFriends: How she sees her relationship with Zenkichi since [[spoiler:she proposed to him when they first met, but he rejected her (they were two-year-olds, so he didn't take it seriously) and forgot the whole thing and she assumes the status never changed. After the Student Presidential Election she does give him a ''much'' more pointed hint.]]

* LackOfEmpathy: Her FatalFlaw, believe it or not, because as much as she wants to be TheHero and TheParagon, she does it out of a sense of duty because her being TheAce makes her unable to understand a lot of people (hence why she's not good with art or music - they're contingent on expression). She particularly struggles to understand how it feels to grapple with failure, such as leading a remedial course focused entirely on improving handwriting because she can't comprehend the idea of actually not knowing the answers. Hell, she can't befriend anybody unless she beats them in a fight, so she treats her enemies as friends and her allies as more or less appendages (best seen with Zenkichi). This takes a pretty depressing tone once [[IJustWantToHaveFriends we learn about her goal in life]]. In the end, however, she gets better by the epilogue.

** First, there are abilities she simply should not perfect. It is implied that if she perfected Munakata Kei's bloodlust Abnormality she would simply feel an even greater urge to kill than he does rather than be able to turn it off. Similarly, a Minus that gets stronger often becomes ''less'' controllable, such as Emukae's.
** Second, due to perfecting things without the need to work at them her self expression is atrocious. She's socially awkward because there isn't a 'right' way to interact with others and her creative/artistic ability is poor because she plays with perfect technique but with no self expression. Thus, when she plays music she actually ends up quite boring. This makes it impossible for her to copy a Style.

* MaleGaze: She gets a lot of reaction shots that show off her figure as much as possible.

* MasterOfYourDomain: She has the capacity to control her body's functions. This climaxes in [[spoiler:turning her body into one big heart after her actual heart stops beating.]]

* MightMakesRight: [[WhatTheHellHero Called out]] by [[{{Jerkass}} Unzen]] of all people. She disagrees with his premises, but later she admits that she's wrong when called out by Koga regarding Kumagawa.

* MsFanservice: She very nearly sees it as her ''duty'' to provide fanservice and behaves accordingly with her exhibitionistic streak.
* NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast: Her "Kurokami Phantom" technique means '''Black God Phantom.''' And you ''better'' run away, or else you'll be caught in the collateral damage zone.

* NoSocialSkills: Medaka has never really been able to learn social skills properly and tends to just copy people and fall back on impressing people into following her. It's telling that Zenkichi seems to be her OnlyFriend.
* ObliviousToLove: She doesn't appear to have a clue about Zenkichi being in love with her even after years of knowing each other. Zenkichi assumes Medaka can't comprehend the feelings of normal humans, so he can't expect her to ever feel the same way about him. [[spoiler:Turns out it was less typical obliviousness and more that Medaka was in denial about Zenkichi having feelings for her because he [[RejectedMarriageProposal rejected her marriage proposal]] when they were two and he never made a pass at her in all those years, so Medaka was convinced her romantic feelings were one-sided until Zenkichi proposes to her.]]

* OneHeroHoldTheWeaksauce: Abnormals and Minuses tend to be very poorly adjusted people because either they always win or they always lose, especially the stronger ones. Thanks to the influence of Zenkichi, however, she can at least act like a passably normal person, if eccentric. Also, unlike almost all of the other characters, her abilities are completely controlled.
* OutOfFocus: During certain arcs she tends to disappear from the plot during times like the Kurokami Medaka’s Successor Arc in order to flesh out the other characters. During these times Medaka seems to be viewed less like a person and more like an idol by the cast.
* TheParagon: Medaka's goal in life to make sure her fellow students do not have any ''problems'' but encourages them to work towards their own goals and dreams. For example, she grows irritated with Akune early on when he does someone's task for them instead of showing them how to do it.
* PlotArmor: Ajimu believes that it would be futile to directly take her on [[GenreSavvy for this reason]], despite being an omnipotent being who could shut off Medaka's "The End". Medaka insists that she's being overestimated.
* PowerCopying: The End, her Abnormality, allows her to instantly gain any skill or ability that she comes into contact with and then ''master'' them. Later on, she doesn't even need to see the skill in action as long as she just hears how it works.
* PowerDyesYourHair: War God Mode turns her hair into a lighter shade of purple (fluorescent red in the anime), Altered God Mode [[spoiler:and End God Mode]] turns it black, Forsaken God Mode turns it white, and Combined God Mode turns it black and white.
* RedArmbandOfLeadership: She's the class president, after all. [[ExaggeratedTrope She also has a blue one and two green ones]].
* RejectedMarriageProposal: Medaka doesn't believe Zenkichi is in love with her because [[spoiler:''she'' asked him to marry her first and he said no. Take in mind this happened when they were ''two years old'' and Zenkichi doesn't even remember said proposal.]]
* RunningGag: Before the GenreShift, Medaka had the habit of appearing in the background, mimicking the actions of the character to their chagrin. [[CerebusRetcon This was later explained as]] her need to identify herself to somebody, ''anybody'' and her inability to do so. And even later explained as the basis for her abnormality. All she can do is imitate other people very very well.
* SavvyGuyEnergeticGirl: Medaka has a tendency to drag the protesting Zenkichi around everywhere whether he likes it or not, in her zeal for helping people.

* SmugSuper: She developed a condescending view on the rest of the world before meeting Zenkichi. Her brainwashing actually just brought this personality to the forefront.

* StrawNihilist: Since nobody could tell her her purpose in life, she came to believe that the whole world and life was pointless. Zenkichi told her she was born to make people happy and that gave her a purpose to live.
* StudentCouncilPresident: Originally a parody of this character archetype, as TheAce who can get anything done on behalf of the student body. [[spoiler: Then losses it with her defeat at the hands of Zenkichi]].

* SuperMode: Has a total of five.

* SuperReflexes: She had to learn the hard way how to dodge, but after that she is nearly untouchable [[spoiler: except against Kumagawa]].

* SuperSpeedReading: As a toddler, Medaka was capable of reading books so quickly and diligently that she would empty libraries.
* SuperStrength: Even early in the story when she's been slacking off she's capable of tearing down buildings that she's stuck on.
* SuperToughness: Her body is much more resilient than most, and even when she does take severe injuries like broken bones, she keeps on fighting anyway.
* TomboyishPonytail: Her ImportantHaircut mentioned above is accompanied by a small ponytail, right as Medaka becomes more free-spirited and fun-loving.
* TookALevelInJerkass: During the Successor Arc, [[spoiler:she starts showing hostility toward Zenkichi after he fails the Treasure Hunt, questioning the value of remaining friends with him for so long when he was outdone by ordinary middle schoolers. Once Zenkichi decides to take a stand against her, she beats him to a pulp and condemns him as pathetically weak, all with the intent of properly pushing him toward becoming her enemy so she can continue to find value in him, unable to recognize that he doesn't want to directly fight her. Maguro attributes her loss to Zenkichi in the next Student Council President election to becoming too unrelatable, with antagonizing her childhood friend being the final straw, though Ajimu thinks otherwise.]]
* TrainingFromHell: Given the choice between easy training and hard training with the same results, she takes the hard training.
* TurnTheOtherCheek: Early on, she will let an enemy wail on her mercilessly if she sees no reason to fight. Nabeshima eventually steps in to handle the fight and has to injure her opponent quite badly to make her stop, after which she points out that Medaka could have done it easier and without hurting her. Medaka mostly quits after this. Though [[GoneHorriblyRight it's a change for]] the better as latter arcs show.
* UncannyValley: {{Invoked}} by Maguro in a bit of ConversationalTroping; it's mentioned later on in the story that Medaka seems inhuman at times. Like an imperfect or, in this case, overly perfect copy. [[spoiler:He believes that it lost her the Student Council President election because people found it too hard to relate to her with the final straw being the fight with Zenkichi, which seemed heartless to the students. Ajimu disagrees with this interpretation, however, and says that people realized they were relying on her too much.]]
** The concept was also brought up when she attempted to join the battle of the bands; she has amazing skill at playing music, but it ultimately sounds dull without expression, something that can't be objectively perfected. Furthermore, her music was described as an inversion of the trope, sounding inhuman and mechanical because it ''lacked'' imperfections, rather than the imperfections to something intended to be human-like usually bringing about this trope.
* UnequalPairing: There's a constant minor subplot about the fact that there is ''nobody'' that is Medaka's equal, least of all Zenkichi, her love interest. [[spoiler:Comes to a head in the Kurokami Medaka’s Successor Arc when A. Maguro realizes he was asking way too much of Zenkichi when he asked him to always support her and B. Medaka walks all over people without realizing it.]]
* UnstoppableRage: Medaka's War God Mode. After copying Oudo's Abnormality, she gains more control over it, but does revert into utter berserker rage [[spoiler:when she thinks Zenkichi died.]]

* WallCrawl: Sprints up a wall to save time early on, but goes too far and ends up wasting time instead.
* WillTheyOrWontThey: With Zenkichi. They go through ''years'' (both in RealLife and in universe) of shipping, two rejections on Zenkichi's part, love confessions and a death or two. [[spoiler:In the final chapter of the series (not counting the last chapter of Kumagawa), she and Zenkichi have one final duel, now that both of them have no powers. If Zenkichi wins, she has to marry him. If she wins, he has to marry her. Awww.]]
* {{Workaholic}}: When she said that she'd help people 24/7, 365 days a year, she really meant it, and she expects the same work ethic from those around her. She stands out as the only student in Class 13 who regularly attends school; Abnormals are not required to do so. She inherited this from her mother, [[spoiler:as Professor Fukurou intended.]]
* WorthyOpponent: As Ajimu points out, Medaka values her enemies more than her allies.

* ComboPlatterPowers: She has thirteen quadrillion different abilities of various shapes and types which allow her to do pretty much anything. She had a long time to live and just spent the whole time learning how to do completely random things.

* ConsummateLiar: So "good" at Macchiavellian deceit, charades, and manipulation, that even Zenkichi can't tell whether she is telling the truth, and Kumagawa is probably the only one who even has a shot at discerning it.

* RantInducingSlight: Kumagawa's slight towards card games puts him into a murderous rage.

* BandagedFace: She covers her face in bandages not only to hide her good looks, but to keep her true identity under wraps, as it were. [[spoiler:She stops covering it after becoming Zenkichi's vice president, leaving an bandaid where a knife was stuck in her right eyelash.]]

* BandageBabe: She's constantly covered in bandages due to sticking swords through her body for whatever reason.
