A must play for Ace Attorney fans. It scratches that itch that we otherwise couldn't get rid of in this AA drought.
The music and art are fantastic, and the spell system has hard rules that leave no ambiguity, which prevents "A wizard did it" or "Everything goes because it's magic". Case 4 is the peak of this game and worth the price of admission alone (you're also gonna need some handkerchiefs because it's very tragic). Case 5 is ambitious and aims for an epic finale, and in some aspects it succeeds... but unfortunately the game goes too wild at the end with the supernatural and the anime for my taste. The devs leave the door open for a sequel, but I worry it may escalate too much in scope. I preferred the more grounded part of the early and midgame.
The sections where you have to form sentences to deduce something are cool in concept, but too many times I found myself just trying to brute force it because I had no clue (whether that's because I'm dumb or because the game makes leaps of logic, I don't know). It is the system used by Detective Grimoire - if you've played that one, you know what I mean.
Something that I can see people disliking is the lack of penalties for getting wrong answers and invalid objections, with a few exceptions like the Arguments (and even then if you lose the Argument you only lose the progress of the Argument). It enables brute-forcing, but let's be honest: it could be done in Ace Attorney games too, just with save scumming instead. The fun way to play is still to try and think critically about the case.
As for nitpicks... I wish the verdict was delivered on-screen like in Ace Attorney. I'm not asking for confetti to be thrown, but just the Not Guilty letters with the sound effects would be nice. I also missed some strong sound effects when the game did a close-up of Tyrion or the prosecutor: just shaking the screen doesn't give enough hype in those shots.
Despite my grievances, the game is very fun and memorable, and well worth the buy if you're an Ace Attorney nerd like me. We need to spread the word! I'd like to talk about the game with others but there aren't enough of us yet!
