UFO was way ahead of its time

If you look past the connection to the swinging 60's bleeding over into the 70's, the fact that smoking was still seen as cool, the sets in the various SHADO headquarters were the product of the expectation of what we would have now and the computer systems of flashing lights this was actually very good. There are several episodes that I thought were particularly good and one that was only ever shown on TV late at night as it was very unsettling to do with drug use and a barn in a forest as I remember. Some things however were brilliant. Those tracked vehicles moving down tracks in a forest are so good you would question even today with a cursory glance, if they were really tanks with a prop makers wooden assembly on top rather than first class model making. The UFO flying through the forest or hovering in it is also pretty good. It is of course a series of its time and shows its age but then again what doesn't. The subsequent Space 1999 fell to pieces the more it got into meeting aliens and the lack of a storyline of any worth showed how poor it became. UFO needed a big budget buyer to pep it up and as that really didn't happen, like all UK Sci-Fi it sort of failed. I particularly like Sound of Silence as it has some of that almost spooky camera work in the forest and of course that part where Susan Jameson, yes the same one who plays Alan Armstrong's wife in New Tricks appears in SHADO headquarters in a red mini dress that I am sure must have been one of Sylvia Andersons prop specials as it appeared on another actress in other episodes if I remember correctly. How time flies when you are having fun! 52 years and now shown on Legend on Freeview. There's nothing like getting old!
